In this video I am taking my first look, walk around and test drive of this brand new 2023 Hyundai Elantra SEL. Big thanks to Gettel Hyundai of Lakewood for allowing me some time with this vehicle. I have a 2022 SEL w premium package and absolutely love it , I'm averaging 40.3 mpg gas prices are alot easier to take with this car. Drives beautiful.

Are you using it on normal mode or smart mode?
@@vinsjonin Normal mode ,I tried Smart mode and it was a few mpg worse, definitely NORMAL MODE is the way to go and also I drive very easy, No running up to red lights etc

Regarding the middle-piece divider, I like the "hold on for your dear life" theory! Just put a deposit down on an allocated SEL for my wife. That's gonna be my panic handle.

Nice objective review! I bought this car in blue two days ago. Beautiful so far and I hope it was a good choice. Prices of all new and used cars have skyrocketed since you made this video! The warranty is what finally sold me.
Good choice! MSRP is the same but dealers are charging extra mark up blaming chip shortage. I hope it will stop soon.
@@MattTheCarguy Actually I negotiated with the dealer over 2 days and ended up getting a fairly good deal. Buying a car is always stressful. I agree the "chip shortage" is a problem but not as much of a problem as the dealers are trying to have customers believe.

I got a Canadian Base model 2022 Elantra. Which means it comes with a 6 speed manual transmission, and 15 inch wheels. If I do mostly highway driving at 113 kph (70 mph) I average 5.5 l/100km or 42.7 mpg. You don't even feel like you're going that fast, the car is so smooth and stable on the highway. Overall, I really like the car. So far, I've had no issues with it, but there is a recall out for it now for the seat belt tensioning system for some the '22 models.
That is great gas mileage considering it is not a hybrid.
How could you not, love the style? It’s a great looking car, and I get a ton of comments from people, when I’m out in it?👍
Well, i am kind of in between. Not a big fan of all the sharp lines and angles. But everyone is different. Glad you love it!

I think the design will age well.. It's futuristic.. I mean the geometric design for the 2010-2016 design still works today... So yeah

Picked up a 21 Elantra SEL a little over a year ago, I love it but I am a little jelly of those bigger media screens.
These are nice, but no wireless apple car play or android auto.
@@MattTheCarguy I was thinking about that, considering I always have my phone on a charger I don't think I'd mind.
But the convience of wireless is good too.
@@Shekina246 Good point! I just like how you don't have to do anything when you enter the car with wireless connection once you initially set it up. And with wireless charging there are no cables needed at all.
My one-yr old 2021 Elantra SEL with only 7,400 mi has been sitting at the dealership for 30 days waiting on a new transmission. There's another car like mine...same year...that's been sitting at the dealership with the same problem. After this happened, I did some online searching and discovered MANY documented issues with Elantras. Just a personal experience FYI.

I just recently bought this car. It’s my first official car buy. I’ve watched a lot of videos on this model since I’m still learning from it and becoming more accustomed to it now. And I must say that you sir have been the most thoroughly informed reviewer I’ve watched. 👍🏻👍🏻 But I am still coming off being so used to my previous car which was a 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS, I loved that car since it was pretty much given to me. It was a great and reliable car to take to the Drive In Movies. So my question would be for you sir if you can help answer for me. How can I get the radio accessory to stay on without the engine running? I get a battery warning while I’m just trying to listen to the radio and then it will turn off on its own within a short time span of 5 minutes.
Thanks for the comment. And great question. I will be at the Hyundai dealership within the next week and I will try to find out if it is possible to keep the radio going with the car off. Unless someone knows and will chime in 🙂
It's a setting in the setup menu, I don't remember exactly where but if you go through the options you will see it.

Matt , thank you for the thorough review. One question, what is the illuminated dial on the left side of the dashboard behind the steering wheel?
You are very welcome. I was told it is a place to attach your phone holder to. Kind of a strange place for it if you ask me.
Purchased ours last Friday. As per our salesman, it's just a lighted graphic to balance out the dashboard. Aside from that, no function to it.
I have an older model, a 2015, and I get 40-45 mpg commuting 90~ miles round trip to work. I love Elantras and Fortes!

Sorry but i don't own it and i doubt a dealership will let me drill holes in their new vehicle. But i believe if you buy it brand new dealership will install it at no charge.
Every car I’ve ever had with struts on the hood the struts start to struggle holding the hood up over time and eventually give out completely, I’ll keep my prop stick lol
Lol. I know thats the advantage of prop sticks but I've had cars that were older and never had an issue with struts.
Do you know why the Paint is called out at $400 on top of MSRP? I've noticed that on the one I'm expected to buy next week (also SEL + Convenience Pkg), however, it's not something Hyundai's website lists as a separate cost - it's just the MSRP + any packages. And thanks for the great review!
Thanks for watching! If you are in US Hyundai's website has the added coat for certain colors. You'd have to start the build and select color. There are only few that cost $400 extra.

I reserved a red one - and like I've seen on many dealerships listings for a red 2023 Elantra - there's a $400 Calypso Red Y2E Paint cost, but don't see that reflected in Hyundai's website for Red (only white seems to have an added cost). Weird. In any case - thanks again!
@@REBakerX you are correct. On Hyundai's website the only color with the upcharge for 2023 Elantra is White. Did you question your dealer regarding it?
Hello Matt ! Is there a button or touchscreen to turn off the navigation map permanently on the right hand side when you back up or when the car approaches behind when you back up ? I like Elantra because of back up camera has very good resolution to compare to
Sentra, Civic, and Corolla that I tested. The back up camera I tested in 2021 SEL standard wows me. I like Corolla because of reliability but Corolla missing a lot of features. I have tried to buy 2022 Elantra SEL convenience package but Hyundai now just allocates 2023 only. I read Kelly blue book said in 2023 models there are no more premium package
Its a good question and I am not 100% sure. You can turn off the navigation on the right third of the screen but the camera will not display on the entire screen only on two thirds. Only map can take up the entire screen. As far as packages they did some changes, take a look at the description of this video this was copied from the sticker. Convenience package now includes some of the premium package options such as 10.25 inch screen with navigation. Maybe the rest of the options will be available as stand alone features.
@@MattTheCarguy Thanks for reply. I also like Toyota Corolla hybrid or Elantra hybrid. I ask dealers in Omaha how long do I have for a custom order ? They said at least 4 months for Elantra but for Corolla might take longer than that. I need to buy a brand new car now because my car 2015 Elantra SE died at 131,000 for engine problem. I used to have 1998 Corolla and it lasted 202,000 miles. If my car Elantra is still running, I wait for next year to buy a 2023 Corolla hybrid all wheel drive so I can drive during the snow weather by custom order ahead of time. Most Toyota hybrid cars made in Japan except next year 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid made in America
@@alanle5369 i will be recording corolla hybrid soon. Both great cars. Toyota is known for their reliabilty, Elantra has 10 year warrenty on the powertrain. If it takes them that long to order maybe look out of state. Inventory is scarce but the vehicles thatbI am recording are usually dealer stock units so they exiat lol. Omaha has few Toyota dealers right? 4? May want to give Chicago a try. They have about 20 . Sometimes it works.
The dealers have hiked the price on this car. Does the sel COME with the convenience package with the wireless charger... it's a must...
Convenience package costs $1900 in US and it does include wireless charging pad among other features.
2023 Hyndai Elantra convenience package have 10.25 nin navigation screen, adaptive cruise control stop & go, electronic parking brake, heat front seats and side mirrors.

I just bought this car yesterday,it was brand new and this was my first time buying a car. I was trying to decide on a sonata or Elantra,but in my opinion the sonata is ugly to me. But I am in love with the 2018 and 2019 sonatas. My last car was also a 2020 Kia optima,so I decided to stay with the Hyundai/kia family and love my decision!!

So the only difference between the 2022 and 2023 are the Dials are now digital? But at the cost of wireless phone projection? Seems like a downgrade. I know the 2023 SEL is basically like a 2022 limited edition .They really need to update the firmware on those larger screens. If I buy a new car it should have wireless phone projection. Pretty happy I got the 2022 Elantra blue hybrid. Because the 8" infotainment screen in the 2022 Blue trim does offer wireless
Different package components. Other than that same as 2022.

Not sure what box. On the door? Is it the speaker that you are referring to?

Does remote start come standard on all models.? I feel remote start has been around so long that all cars should come with it standard... Just my opinion
I think any vehicle equipped with Bluelink has remote start. They used to give you a year for free than paid subscription. Not sure what it is now.

About 10k miles a year
@@srtjs7793 well unless you are planning to drive a lot more or have some ideological preference towards the hybrid I would probably go with the regular one and her is why: 10000/40 = 250 ( that is how many gallons you would use driving a regular Elantra give or take) 10000/60 =167 ( approx gallons on a Hybrid) 250-167 = 83. in you case you would save about 83 gallons annually so at $4 a gallon you would save $332 a year so $3000 ( difference in price) /332 ( annual difference in gas cost) = 9. So it would take you about 9 years to recoup the difference in price.
I think of the f117 when it comes to the Sharpe angels and such. I bought one in black yesterday and its freaking badass. And I can start it with my iPhone.

If sunroof is important than go that's a smart choice. I don't remember last time mine was opened.

Hey I actually got a 2023 Elantra Sel I want a little power should I just install an performance air filter and leave it alone
What type of performance air filter are you planning to install? While on paper they show more hp in real life they make little difference as far as performance in my opinion.
@@MattTheCarguy you are definitely right a little bit is really it I was looking at K&N I wanted some more mods but Ik more of them void the warranty but it’s honestly ok I wanted a cold air intake but then again it’s costly and I’ll have someone to install aka more money I might tune it but I wanted a opinion from a older and wiser man like yourself
@@Thunder_the_hedgehog thank you for your kind words 😀 Unfortunately i dont have much experience with tuning. But if I were to do any modifications i would first check out a higher trim level first with more powerful engine like the n line. Yes it is few thousand difference but has huge performance advantage. But if you already own a vehicle definitely go to reputable shop for any mods as you may be voiding your warranty.

The only differences i was told are the option packages and what they include. As an example convenience package for 2022 did not include Navigation but for 2023 does( it costs 1000 more) That of course does not apply to limited as all features of convenience package are already standard on It.
So the short answer is no.. lol
@@MattTheCarguy thanks for the answer! I loved my Elantra 2022 limited. Unfortunately there was an accident which resulted in total loss, so I was thinking if I should wait for 2023 or try to get another 2022. Looks like no need to wait (assuming I can find another 2022 limited)
@@arun279 as far aa i know that is a recall on 2022 that resukted in "stop sale" on 2022 models until fixed

So far there are two theories:
1. No function, just a design element to balance the dashboard.
2. A place to attach phone holder. ( strange)

Trunk LOCK. HOW do i do it. 40 different ways to UNLOCK the trunk. well how do keep it LOCKED ??
It locks when you lock your doors.
@@MattTheCarguy Hi thank you for the reply. Because I had the keyfob in my hand while standing by the trunk, it was not locked. But when I put the keyfob far away from the trunk, the trunk was locked.

I havent heard of any catastrophic failures yet. Its been around for few years.

It is SEL 2nd trim from bottom. I think sunroof comes with Limited

@rohit mathi It'll be basically the same.. the sel is like the preferred with sun and tech minus the sunroof.. not sure though, if that white will be introduced in canada on the 2023 preferred trim.. dealers should know by now.. I ordered an essential a few weeks ago and they knew the colours for that trim..
@Matt The Carguy The wheels might also be different.. preferred will have 16" wheels and the wheels in this video look like they might be the 17" ones that came on the ultimate trim on 2022 models.. the preferred had all black 16" wheels in 2022 so those might carry over on the 2023's
Any engine issues with new generation elantra? Hyundai is known for engine 🔥
I have not heard anything about these engines. The ones investigated for fires were up to 2019. Time will tell.

@@jbshp2011 its always good to follow some specific manufacturer's forums online. So far what i have seen is the seatbelt recall that affected relatively small number of vehicles.

The black wheels are 16 inch. These are the wheels used for the limited trim in 2021-2022 and are 17. Much better upgrade. Plastic dip them black if you like them that way :)
