Being something of an old fart, I love it when I see younger generations discover the great music I grew up with. Yes, please. More like this.
I too brother. I'm headed rapidly to 73 yrs old. Once in a blue moon of blue moons I hear something I have not heard even on Mr. Orbison compilation albums. BUT not many. The Raybans were initially to hide behind but he found he could see the audience past the spot lights and kept them as a trademark.
When Roy Orbison joined The Travelling Willburys (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan) they all were in awe of him. Elvis was a baritone. Roy was a counter tenor. Elvis would have killed for his range.
What a crooner man is tone is immortal. He went on to have a very long productive career moved into production and also resurfaced when he joined the Traveling Wilburys which was Tom Petty George Harrison himself and the primary songwriter for the Electric Light Orchestra whose name eludes me right now. Excellent band as well

He was not blind but he had very poor vision. Wearing sunglasses was his trademark. He was Elvis's favorite singer. Girls were somber because they were in awe of his voice. I was a teenager in the 1960s, and Roy was really popular.
Sorry, Roy wasn’t a countertenor…he was a tenor. “Countertenors are, give or take, able to sing the same range of notes as female contralto and mezzo-soprano singers. Contralto falls within the alto range and is the lowest range of female voices, while mezzo-sopranos are somewhere between altos and sopranos, not being able to hit the lowest notes of the former range nor the highest notes of the latter.” There are plenty of good examples on TH-cam…and Roy Orbison wasn’t one.
"Pretty Woman", "Only the Lonely" "Blue Bayou" "Running Scared" "Its Over" are all big big Roy Orbison hits from the Sixties. Roy and Elvis came up together and were fans of one another.
My favorite is Blue Angel!

It's called respect. When you go to hear someone sing, you quietly sit & listen. One of the reasons The Beatles quit doing concerts was because no one actually listened to them.
KD Lang did a duet with Roy Orbison on this song in 1988. KD Lang is a well known Canadian singer, who also did a famous rendition of Leonard Cohen's Halleluiah. Her voice is amazing.
Their duet was so good, and her tribute to Roy was just special

My dad used to play Roy Orbison all the time growing up.😊 They were pretty close in age. Maybe about a year apart. Elvis Presley was a big fan of Roy orbison. Elvis even once said that he thought Roy had the most perfect voice in the world. Elvis even said that he'd never record one of Roy's songs because he wouldn't be able to do it any better.
Most likely the song you've heard maybe in movies that Roy Orbison did was called oh pretty woman but my personal favorite of his songs is (anything you want) I sang that song to my everyday while she was going through chemo treatment it's very hard for me to listen to it now without crying

@@laupstad Don McLean had a cover of this very song, Crying, that was a bit of a hit. I remember Orbison drawing a distinction saying that he did in full voice, without using falsetto.
Roy was not blind but he did have poor eyesight. He forgot his normal glasses for a performance once so he wore his prescription sunglasses instead and that became his signature look. He was also self-conscious about his almost white hair from a young age and dyed it jet black. Incredible singer and musician.

This is actually not true that he had poor eyesight. It was just more speculation from him wearing the dark sunglasses all the time on stage. He had stated several times in interviews that he never had a stylist or anyone like that so he wore whatever he was the most comfortable for him. He wore the dark sunglasses because the made him more comfortable on stage, with the lights and even having to look into large audiences. So it was a lot of rumors and speculation that just wasn’t accurate. I have no idea about the hair thing, I have never heard that before.
Same with Stevie Wonder, they Were legally blind which means they couldn't see farther than , 2 feet in front of them. Elvis after he got glaucoma was the same after 1973.which makes it even more amazing how he performed on stage! The lights hurt Elvis eyes so bad that it caused him alot of pain . It was tears streaming from his condition, not sweat like people thought streaming down his face. There was always someone waiting in the wings to lead Elvis out to the car from the stage because he was blind from the lights!
I honestly can't think of another person who sounds like him. He was one of a kind.

The most cruel turn of fates I've seen in my life was when in the middle of of his late 80's comeback, He was taken from us..He'd been through sooo much heartache in his life and deserved to live a lot longer.
Roy had a 7 octave range and was amazing. And yes he sang a duet with kd lang singing this song. And then at his memorial she sang it. Stunning rendition. kd lang has THE most beautiful voice.

@@danrebeiz4598 Actually in the "Guinness Book of World Records" there is a man by the name Tim Storms who has a 10 octave vocal range and a woman named Georgia Brown with a vocal range of 8 octaves. However, I did look up Roy and he had between 3 and 4 octave range.
Then I stand corrected regarding no human being able to do that. I guess the next logical question is can they actually sing in those registers? :)

He had photophobia, extreme sensitivity to light. A medical condition. Roy Orbison had a phenomenal voice . Songs from the 60s were done without any enhancement. He was a prolific, songwriter and performer. Amazing.

"In Dreams" is my favourite from him, but he's got a dozen songs that are all time classics. He had such a memorable voice and the emotion he can convey is amazing.

You need to watch "Black and White Nights". It was a tribute to him. Bruce Springsteen, K. D. Lang, Tom Waites (sort of), I can't remember all of the names that jumped at a chance to play with him. "Pretty Woman" is amazing.

The crowd was told to sit and be quiet because it was being recorded. He wrote a lot of hit records for everyone including Elvis.
Saw him too, in the early 70's he didn't talk much just introduce his next song and we clapped so hard our hands turned red. Back then recording or not you sat quietly and listened to the song and clapped at the end. If you made noise, you would be ushered out immediately.
His voice is just so incredible and his song writing is unique - check out his story: it's truly about overcoming tragedy.
There is a fantastic video of Roy Orbison doing a concert filmed in black and white with a ton of famous musicians in his backing band. He was doing his hits with k d lang. Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warnes doing backing vocals and members of Elvis' backing band James Burton, Ronnie Tut and Jerry Scheff plus Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, JD Souther, Jackson Brown and others who all admired and respected him, in a show called 'A Black and White Night'. Soooo worth checking out!

The Traveling Wilbury’s were amazing. I remember listening to them over and over. So much talent in that group. Roy is a legend. No one sounds like him or has such range. He’s just incredible.

Many (many) years ago I had the privilege of seeing Roy Orbison in concert - he hit every note and in person his voice was even more thrilling. If you haven't seen the Traveling Wilbury's "End of the Line" or "Handle Me With Care" they're just fantastic - sadly 3 of that super-group (Roy Orbison, Tom Petty & George Harrison) have all passed on but the music lives on. Listen to his song "In Dreams" - it's a heart-breaker.
That was pure talent a singer who could actually sing a song in a live performance flawlessly. Sample Linda Ronstadt's Blue Bayou also a live performance no autotune.

Roy had so many hits. He also did this with K D Lang. She later did a solo tribute to him. She was one of his backup singers. The lead singer for the Mavericks patterned his style after Roy. I bet You have heard Pretty Woman by Roy.

I was priveliged to see Roy in concert back in the mid 80's. I was front row center. When he sang Crying the hair on my neck stood up snd I had goosebumps.
Roy's hair was dyed. He had very light hair and light sensiive eyes. That is why you see the dark glasses.
I remember when this was a huge hit. Actually this album generated a lot of hits. His voice was unique. Every teen girl loved his songs. Yes he wrote and sang Only the Lonely. Miss him. Yes, Pretty Woman and many more songs.

According to Roy Orbinson's son, Roy forgot his glasses when he went to do a show in Europe. This was before easily replaceable glasses with plastic lenses or easy quick deliveries. He only had his prescription sunglasses to wear. So he wore them in place of his regular glasses. He wore them even during his performances.
Later he decided to continue to wear dark glasses for subsequent performances even when he had his regular glasses. The dark glasses became his personal trademark during his performances.
Elvis was first, they both recorded at Sun Records, along with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. They all came after Elvis was famous and they were all greatly influenced by him. Almost every singer that came after Elvis was influenced by him. He changed everything about popular music, dress, culture, etc.❤

Roy wrote Oh, Pretty Woman with friend Bill Dees. Story is his wife Claudette (another song) came in to get money from him and left, walking down the street to go shopping. He and Bill penned that song while she was gone.

Roy Orbison was amazing! I was a teenager in the 60s! It was a time of excitement, opinions, turmoil and war! I feel lucky to have been a part of that generation, although we haven’t done well by yours! We are now old men and women who have lived good lives and we are leaving you in times that are very much like the sixties, both the good and the bad! It looks different but feels much the same.
This is another one of Roy's songs.He was a great song writer.He had a lot of tragedy in his life but he never seemed to stop performing.BTW,Roy wasn't blind but he often had stage fright.This sounds familiar because you just listend to K.D.Lang covering his songs.

No, he was not blind. But his eyes were very light sensitive. So he the dark sunglasses to help him see on stage. And if you have ever performed on stage, then you know how bright they can get.

I watched this video when it was new. I loved your reaction and appreciation for Roy and his music. I'm an Old Broad (b.1954) so I remember hearing Roy on the radio when I was quite young. Only The Lonely and Pretty Woman were on the radio then. I felt so bad for him--he sounded so hurt. Turns out he was hurt-more than folks should be: he lost his wife in a motorcycle (I believe) accident, and 2 of his children in a house fire. He could try to hide that pain behind sunglasses (and poor eye-sight), but he couldn't hide the pain from his voice.

My personal favorite of Roy's is Running Scared. My personal connection to that song involves me heading home after my first game playing for my HS football team, after we won, my dad was driving me home listening to the oldies station (this would have been 1988) and that song came on as we pulled out of the parking lot and the song just hit me that (the other teams) "they were running scared".
Unfortunately that was our only win of the season we were terrible. LOL But that song and memory stuck with me.

I was born in 53 and had the luxury of hearing the best music ever. I still listen to these songs and am so happy that the youngsters are finding our generation was the best ever.

There's another video they made "End of the Line" but Roy passed before they shot the video, so they used an empty chair with just his guitar in shots where he was the vocalist to honor him.
Both songs are great - and are masterpieces with some of the greatest rock and roll artists all time: George Harrison (Beatles - RIP), Tom Petty (RIP), Roy Orbison (RIP), Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynne (of Electric Lights Orchestra aka ELO).

It may interest you to know that Roy and Johnny Cash were practically neighbors and would often get together and jam at each others homes...often joined by other talents like Bob Dylan and Chris Christopherson . One could only imagine the genius present in one place

I've been following rap fans reacting to other type of music for a while now. It struck me that you would probably have an interesting take on poetry as well. One of my all time favorite Orbison songs is Running Scared - an entire movie in song in less than 3 minutes. It takes incredible writing talent to convey an entire story so compactly yet with all the emotion and power of entire novel.
