Roy Orbison was a Giant in the music business. He influenced so many artists, of various genres over 50 plus years, until he passed away.

He didn't stop influencing artists when he died, just sayin' 🙂 We are lucky to still have his body of work.
The videos from his 1988 "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" really showcase some of the many famous artists who looked up to him. Bruce Springsteen looked like a starry-eyed kid just happy to sing and play backup for his hero. Tom Waits was there, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, and Bonnie Raitt, too... and Billy Idol was in the audience.

@@bcpr9812 As a Canadian, I'd add that he was a major supporter and mentor of k.d. lang, helping her breakthrough to American audiences by doing a duet with her on a late night talk show (and later in his Black and White concert) of this song. This was at a time where being out as a lesbian in the music business was usually career suicide, but Roy was the kind of man who cared for all people, and did what he could to support her career.

"Elvis " and Roy started out at almost exactly the same time in 1956. Both were 18 yrs old. They ended up signing a record contract with a new, just starting out record label, (like them) called "Sun Records." Guess who else signed with that upstart record label? Johnny Cash! In fact, there is a picture of all three of those young men together in a little office of this new little record label together. None of them is older than 23. Elvis and Roy were just 18 years old. Elvis said Roy Orbison had the voice of an Angel, and he would trade voices with him in a minute! That's saying something. Roy had incredible range in his voice, hitting those very high notes. All three remained close friends until Elvis, and then Roy died. Roy had horrible things happen to him and his family over the years. Wife, and son died in a fire, and then he lost another child in a later marriage. Roy was a man of faith, and always said God was in control, and he would see those who were taken, when he went to Heaven.
What a guy. So much faith in God.

Just a little correction; Roy's wife died in a motorcycle accident & 2 of their (3) sons were killed in a house fire. June 6, 1966, Roy & Claudette were riding motorcycles. She hit a truck that pulled out in front of her & died in Roy’s arms. Sept. 14, 1968, while Roy was on tour, sons Roy Dewayne, age 10, & Anthony King, age 6, died in a house fire. Roy’s parents were able to save the youngest, Wesley, age 3 (& they ended up raising him). Roy later wed Barbara & they had 2 children (Roy Kelton & Alexander).

Not sure where you got this info but in 1956 Roy Orbison was 20 years old and Elvis was 21, Neither were 18 years old in 1956...Elvis was 18 in 1953, the year he signed up for the draft. And Johnny Cash was 24 in 1956...Where ever you copy and pasted all these events are way off the mark.. The years and ages are all wrong and the deaths of Roy's family are incorrect. The qualities of being a masterpiece and being simple are not necessarily mutually exclusive. However, in a very real sense this song was simple in comparison to so many modern songs, which tend to be very overdone, with so many different things going on at the same time. Too many modern songs just don't give the listener time to take a breath. When it comes to true musical quality, less is often more.

Roy Orbison was the rock and roll balladeer with an almost operatic voice, with a range somewhere between 3 and 4 octaves, an emotionally vulnerable male singer at a time when men typically didn't show that kind of vulnerability. His song structures are unique, no one wrote a song quite how Roy did. He also was my mom's favourite when she was a teenager, and he's still her favourite now that she's 70.

Roy actually wanted Elvis to do "Only The Lonely." Roy said he'd just written it, was driving from TX to the studio in Memphis, stopped by Graceland, intending to play it for Elvis & see if he wanted to record it. It was about 6am & Elvis sent word (to the gate) that everyone was still sleeping, so Roy left & drove to the studio, where he offered it to Phil Everly, who wasn't impressed, so Roy decided he'd just record it himself (which he did a few days later).

One of the amazing things about Roy was that when you saw him perform this or any of his other songs live, hitting those high notes or that powerful ending, seemed effortless. Most singers would be making agonized faces trying to sell the song. Roy just opened his mouth and the magic flowed out. It's very simple. but it's a simple story. one we all know. by the way, he's an amazing guitarist. And his vocal style is incredibly unique in my opinion. It's like he can yell while whispering, if that makes sense

Back in the day, it wasn't unusual for a man to admit his own emotions such as sadness, vulnerability, and crying in their songs. Men feel these things and a real MAN, comfortable with their masculinity, can admit those things. It's a good example for young boys and young men to see that what they feel, and they do feel those things, are normal for men to feel. It doesn't make you less of a man, it makes you a human man, a normal man.

What are you talking about? That might be generally true but music was one of the few places where it was always acceptable. Standards, soul, country, all of them are filled with tear jerkers in the 40s, 50s, and 60s

I saw Roy Obison in 1980 when he opened for The Eagles during their Long Run tour. I was a immediate fan, even though he was a music generation before me. I would be shocked if you haven't already heard his hit "Pretty Woman" as it was covered in many movies. His songs are all great, please do more.

Always enjoy watching you two react to early rock classics. "Crying" is probably one of the most spectacular songs and performances of all time. I played my 45rpm copy to death as a teenager back then.

So many of the great old rock and rollers of the 60s and 70s and even 80s always - always - mentioned Roy Orbison as an inspiration and a mentor. he was a quiet guy, but a giant if you listen to people like Springsteen and Dylan and many others.

Thank you for this. It has already been said but Roy Orbison was one of the most influential singer/songwriters in his time (Beatles, Springsteen, Everly Brothers, U2, Eagles, KD Lang, Linda Ronstadt and the list goes on and on). But more importantly he was genuinely a kind and gentle man that loved his family and his craft. A true gentleman in every sense of the word and I miss him. But his music lives on and continues to inspire to this day. Rest in Love Roy and thank you!

When Roy Orbison began picking up steam most critics agreed that his style and music (most self-written) transcended all popular American music forms. When he did his first run-through of this song with orchestra backing -- and hit his high notes -- the orchestra just stopped cold in amazement.
Factoid: on tours Roy Orbison carried glasses and sunglasses (both prescription). When he was touring England in the early 1960's with the Beatles (who idolized him) he lost his regular glasses just before going on stage. So he opted for his sunglasses and realized they were much better for him on stage because they helped him suppress his natural stage fright.

He was a master of the melodramatic love song. 'In Dreams' is probably my favorite of all, but 'Oh, Pretty Woman' is probably the best known. He had a LOT of hits in the early 60s and was extremely influential over the British Invasion groups that idolized him.

Bruce Springsteen's speech for Roy Orbison's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction in 1987!
"In 1970, I rode for fifteen hours in the back of a U-haul truck to open for Roy Orbison at the Nashville Music Fair. It was a summer night and I was 20 years old, and Orbison came out in dark glasses, a dark suit and he played some dark music. In 1974, just prior to going into the studio to record my album Born To Run, I was looking at Duane Eddy for his guitar sound and I was listening to a collection of Phil Spector's records and Orbison's All-Time Greatest Hits. I'd lay in bed at night with just the lights of my stereo on and I'd hear 'Crying', 'Love Hurts', 'Running Scared', 'Only The Lonely', and and 'It's Over' filling my room. Orbison's voice was unearthly. He had the ability, like all great Rock and Rollers, to sound like he dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livin' in today, and it was how he opened up your vision. I carry his records with me when I go on tour today, and I'll always remember what he means to me and what he meant to me when I was young and afraid to love. In 1975, when I went into the studio to record, Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector's productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison."

I was fortunate to see Roy twice. His vocals live were SOARING! He was a pillar for so many of the greats to follow (Beatles). Imagine turning on your radio late at night and finding the station from 150 miles away...the sound crackles til you get the dial in the sweet spot. Then this voice comes soaring of the airwaves and ends with the still of the night! The magic of Roy Orbison!
