Sadly the pet food industry preys on people's lack of knowledge of what's really going into many of these foods. Also many of the practicing vets are not educating their pet owner patients about the danger of these low quality foods as well. Thanks Doctor Jones for spreading the word about these poisonous foods!

They also have "meat and bone meal." No animal identifier, so you have no idea what creature the meat and bones came from. Anything that is vague like that (another would be "animal fat") is something I try to avoid.

@@summersalix Hi. I make organic dog food for my little dog. I make the dog food using organic vegetables and fruit first. The ones that I use are carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, baby spinach, blueberries and zucchini. Sometimes if I have asparagus I would add that as well. I simply boil them up until they are quite soft and let them cool. I then puree them and my food processor. To make sure that there is variety I will add the organic meat separately to the dog food each time I feed him. I shred the cooked meat and add it to the dog food. I then reheat it for a short time in the microwave. After that I add Doctor Jones' supplement and some Castor and Pollux Organix kibble. I asked Dr. Jones about the kibble and he said that that brand was okay. It's actually made in Canada. Anyway, my dog loves it...and ever since I've been making his food for him and using Doctor Jones supplement...his health has been great! He did have a small problem with arthritis but I haven't seen that anymore.

The humans in my family are on the Feingold diet, which is free of artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, and petroleum-based preservaties (BHT, BHA, TBHQ). It helps a lot with behavior and overall health and state of mind. My new fur babies are on the same diet!

Love you, love your channel, I feed my dogs John Burns dog food here in UK, he is a Vet and I must admit I gave the ingredients a quick scan, but so far am delighted with it as my girls are looking healthier as a result and many lumps on my older lab have shrunk, some disappeared altogether, less waste which means better digestion, also healthier looking waste.. It costs more but worth every penny for my girls.

There are many different ways to feed a home prepared raw diet. We learned about the sodium pentobarbital in the dog foods after our 12-13 yr old female Samoyed was put down in 2016. She had an enlarged spleen and what looked to be cancer throughout her large intestines. All the dogs we adopted after losing her we made sure didn’t have that crap in it. It is amazing how many foods had that stuff and not good for em fillers. I feed apple after I feed any type of fish. It helps bind to metals and then your dog can pass em easier.

Asparagus
Sweet Potato
Pumpkin: Stock up on after-Halloween deals and turn them into purees you can freeze and use all year! A at-home treatments for dog's constipation
Spinach
Green beans
Brussels sprouts
Parsnips: A bit too starchy to feed often, but if you’re preparing something for your family with parsnips (or other root veg) feel free to treat your pup to a bite
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower
Cucumber
Peas
Zucchini
Beets: Feed these in moderation and remember that it’ll turn your pup’s poop red.
Kale
Pupford websites says no to asparagus. Some websites says yes to asparagus. Need to cook asparagus spears. asparagus spears needs to be soft, reducing the risk that your dog could choke on them.
My dog is diabetic so alot of these vegetables she can't eat
Peas and legumes are actually bad for dogs. Linked to cardiomyopathy and full of phytates, something that blocks absorption of vitamins. Ok for tiny.treats, but a red flag if in the first half of ingredients.
Hi Dr. Jones, my cats have just been diagnosed with Stage 2 CKD. They’ve been recommended a prescription diet. Is there a way to continue adding fresh homemade food? Thank you.
Dr Jones has a few videos about ckd. He does not recommend rx food. He suggests wet food with about 10% protein. The rx foods aim to lower phosphorus and they do that by lowering the protein. The ingredients are terrible and some of them are dry food!What I do since my kitty’s phosphorus was high is I add a phosphorus binder to her food. I use Vetoquinol Epakitin. It also lowered her creatinine and BUN. But at stage 2 your kitty may not need the binder yet.
Can you recommend some brands of dog food that you may feel that are healthy? I do make sure my dog food has no byproduct in it. However, I would LOVE and greatly appreciate your advise on this! Possibly make a video with this information? 🤔

I use tripe ,(not cleaned) especially for dogs who have hip problems...really eases their pains. I believe in raw food, raw bones for good chewing, bone sizes according to dog's jaw size to encourage chewing rather than swallow. Eggs,bit of fish,yogurt,oats,some herbs and most vegetables. They love my soups too so I always make extra. Dogs should eat food we eat or at the very least we could but prefer not too if we for eg. are vegetarians. Variety is important and keeps them healthy and their teeth clean. Season's Greetings to all.

Hi doctor. Blessings from Florida. I have a question please can you make a video about excessive drinking water, my winner miniature dog. My dog doesn't have diabetes. The vet says protein leak!! He is just no stop drinking water, she prescribed a medication I don't remember the name... but why suddenly dogs starting having this issue????
Dr Andrew - I feed a mixture of food to my dog and my cat - the dry item I use is a nugget product made in Canada called Carna4 - after a lot of research - e-mails - phone calls - including a long list of questions supplied by a vet I know - what is your take on this product (which is also approved by a couple of on line Animal Nutritionists and Vet.) always concerned about what is in my pets food - this is always a work in process for me - still at it.
Dr Jones - I read your Dog Foods Special Report and have been making my dog food with the recipes in it. However this video says rice is not good because of Arsenic. So what do I use in it's place?? Supposedly potatoes are not good either, as they were one of the ingredients to avoid in dog food in the DCM scare.

Diet is so important as diabetes and blindeness is very heartbreaking and diet related. Dr Jones, you would be the perfect person to develope a good kibble for us. Real food adds up time and money make it challenging to do all the time and kibble is so helpful to cut things with, its really important as at least part of the meal.

Here lately the beneful incredibites I've been buying for my small senior dogs has been having a really bad awful odor when I open the bag so I throw it away. Why is it stinky?? I don't think a dry dog food that reaks is good. Am I wrong Dr. Jones please answer ASAP.. Thank you..
I am beginning to think that it is best to avoid processed pet food all together. My dog is having recurring pancreatitis even being on a low fat hydrolyzed food.
I lost my dear jack russle to pancreatitis...low fat diet is definitely needed to avoid pancreatitis.
@@WaningGibbous I am so sorry. My girl is 14 and had a sudden onset of pancreatitis almost 2 months age. She had a secondary liver/gallbladder infection and spent 5 days in the emergency vet. She was eating a low fat diet at that time. Now, she is having another flare and I am medicating her at home and hoping to keep her out of the hospital. Obviously she needs a food change if she recovers from this 😔

Its not about the fat, it's the type of fat. Cooked fats are different. My dog is on raw and eats mainly pork, duck, beef and turkey. Alot of fatty protein. But raw fats aren't rendered by cooking and are very healthy and good for dogs even. Raw food is the best.

Bladder stones. I couldn't get her prescription dog food. The Canadian company started exporting and so supply stopped. So I am using a few supplements meat and limted vegetables I feel terrible because she loves vegetables. But so many are a problem
There is an issue in the UK with Felix AGAIL cat food making cats sick and or die, since they changed the recipe earlier this year, we are considering legal action as a group and are currently trying to work towards that. Felix AGAIL apparently changed the recipe apparently all they done was take out the artificial ingredients and preservatives but somehow now lots of cats are getting sick and dying and the number is in the hundreds that have died and probably thousands that have got sick. I was just wondering if you could give us any advice regarding what this could possibly be?
All experiencing the same symptoms sickness, diarrhea, fatigue, skin problems including biting and overgrooming resulting in really serious damage, refusing to eat cat food, fluid on the lungs, growths, tests coming back inconclusive its also happened to a variety of users too, people who use it long term, have just started using it or just got a cat or kitten for the first time, rescues, people wanting to just change their cat food. The supermarkets are being left with stacks of this on the shelves now as more and more people stop buying Purina products. Purina refuse to recall even as a precaution despite the thousands of complaints of sick and dying cats after consuming this food, lucky ones that stopped feeding, the cats have recovered after not being fed Felix and even some other Purina products. It can not be a coincidenece there are far too many cats getting sick eating this poison. This is mostly limited to the UK although we have had members from other countries joining the UK facebook group For Cats Recently Affected by Felix who have had some issues too so it could be even more widespread.
I see a sorbic acid preservative. Is this one bad for dogs? I've heard good things about Fromm Family Pet Food. Here's the ingredient list.. I would love your opinion!! It's kibble... so I still plan on adding REAL food you've suggested (eggs, sweet potato, oils, etc....) Ingredient List: Beef,Pork Meat and Bone Meal,Peas,Lentils,Chickpeas,Potatoes,Dried Sweet Potatoes,Dried Tomato Pomace,Pork Liver,Dried Whole Egg,Flaxseed,Pork Fat,Salmon Oil,Pea Flour,Cheese,Lamb,Brewers Dried Yeast,Alfalfa Meal,Potassium Chloride,Carrots,Lettuce,Celery,Salt,Monosodium Phosphate,L-Tryptophan,DL-Methionine,Taurine,Chicory Root Extract,Yucca Schidigera Extract,Sodium Selenite,Sorbic Acid (Preservative),Vitamins,Minerals,Probiotics.
I avoid fillers like corn and any byproducts. I didn’t know about the Teflon problem.

I have a question it's not about food i have a 9 months old Cane Corso well he will be be 9 months old in two days neither testicle has dropped i think he's crypto i know if you get a dog neutered before they're fully mature it can cause hip dysplasia i know if I don't get him neutered it's a big risk of testicle cancer how long is it okay to wait to get him neutered without risking him getting testicle cancer about 18 months old is about full mature so I would like to wait until then to get him neutered i don't want him to get testicle cancer though???

I have found that Nulo freestyle dog food is my dogs fav, and none of what he said is in it...
Do you advise not using rice in homemade dog food (feeding cooked food that's balanced & supplemented)? Should I wash the rice first? It's not a significant portion of the recipe.
If you're going to go with a carb, I always see quinoa being recommended instead of rice. It's far more nutritious and, as he touched on, rice is problematic in a few ways.

Thank you so much Dr. Jones, I have a cat that only eats Inaba cat treats although they’re treats they’re made with chicken and/or tuna, his Vet said after a day or 2 he would eat cat food if I give him nothing and that’s not true my cat is a rescue he has mental and physical scars, I know I’ve learned that’s serious for cats, I’ve tried everything and I’m lost, my cat does eat Blue Mountain kibble again the only thing he’ll occasionally eat, I’m truly lost, I’ve had cats most my life, I’m 55.. any advice than what my vet said would be greatly appreciated from Anyone Please? I understand how the cats ur baby. We care for feral felines (adults & kittens) and the sick ones steal our hearts, besides the kittens we foster. They take a piece with them when they adopt out!

Thank you,, Dr. Jones! I make my dog's food, and I simmer in it half cup of uncooked rice and half cup of uncooked organic barley in it, after I rinse it. Of course, I add supplements to it. But now I think I'll take out the rice altogether and just use organic barley. Do you feel this would be safer?
Dogs don't need the starch and carbs! They are just used as cheap fillers!

@@lindamyers953 Dogs need fiber, rice is a good fiber. The arsenic level in rice might be exaggerated a little. Asians that eat a large percentage of rice outlive most of the world.

I’ve taken my Australian Shepard to vets several times for pooping constantly after he eats!! He is losing weight and they did comprehensive blood, all is normal. We have tried so many different foods but he has the runs or very soft poop? Eat is constantly hungry??? I mean he is always wanting to eat and we have to keep feeding him?? If we don’t then he will starve to death!! Never had this problem and no answers!! Does anyone know what it could be?? I would appreciate it if someone can give me an idea? The only thing that I can think of would be last year I fead him an artificial bone and it really tore up his stomach! The vet said that since it was a year ago that it would not be the bone. But since then his stomach has not been the same!! A dog that poops 8-10 times a day and night is not normal??
Might dog salmon oil supplements contain mercury? Or is it just fish by product that has high levels of it?
