The STAIRCASE is Becoming My Favourite Build / Off Grid LOG CABIN (S3 Ep15)

  • I've been slowly working on the staircase over the course of the last year, collecting the right pieces of the wood, waiting for the wood to dry, the inspiration to come. To make it less steep I decided to build an L shaped staircase with a glass covered platform in the middle to showcase a beautiful root I found in the forest from a tree torn out by the wind storm. I've been climbing the ladder thousands of times while building the log cabin and the fall I've had was a sign to hurry up with the stairs. The video was long so I decided to split it into two parts, this is the first part of the staircase build.
    Thank you for watching!

First of all I would like to say that I am happy to see you did not get hurt when you fell from the ladder. I grew up in the construction field and have done the exact same thing when I was much younger and I watched my father do it also. We were lucky as you were and only suffered some scrapes and bruises. Your work is amazing and very beautiful. I love to see that your family is there to help. What would otherwise be left to rot, burnt in a brush pile or cut up for firewood, showcases the beauty of a rarely utilized piece of the tree. It's the perfect use of the tree's root.
Beauty and symmetry found within the roots of trees intrigue me, the wood itself does as well. Whether it's alive or dead, I feel a strong connection with it.
This may well sound ridiculous to some people (but really, I don't much care), it's as though the wood itself calls out and/or speaks to me.
Regardless of my rantings, you have done a magnificent job. Be proud of yourself young man. Be very proud !

The organic shape looks great with all the linearity going on in the rest of the cabin. Having the landing is going to be a plus when it comes taking your furnishings upstairs. Great job, Nik and pretty lady!

Nik, I agree. That, i think, is one of my favorite builds you have done to date. I can't wait to see how the stairs mate up with the landing.

Wow, with the support of the roots transformed into branches, the creative landing in glass would definitely give you guys the true feeling of going up to your warm nest in a "tree" house.

Nik is to repurposed tree trunks as Mr. Miagi was to Bonsai. Each saw the true potential and helped them become something extraordinary. Great job Nik.

I admire your work, and the (glass-covered platform in the middle to showcase a beautiful root) is amazing. I hope whenever you were free in the following years, place good support under the house to fix the tree root from below, and secure it safely. Then remove all those thick vertical tree trunks from the table, they covered the tree root and its beauty!!! You did such a great job, then let it show and shine!

Cracked up when your wife crawled between the door frame and the root shimmied right thru very agile lady and a great helper.

Going to be a beautiful staircase!
I gasped when the ladder slid out from under you! Hubby broke his right humerus when the ladder slid out from under him while framing the second story on our house. The two youngest and I finished the build of the house, with him watching and giving guidance as his arm healed.

A great idea, with a very nice result. when you finish the staircase, and finish the central table, with the other beautiful root, you will have a spectacular set, on the floor of the living room. I'm glad the fall from the stairs was just a scare. Congratulations and go ahead, there is a little less to finish.

This is amazing ! I love it when I see someone take a piece of wood that no one would give the slightest value, and turn it into a work of art! You are an artist Nick!
