I've just spent the last 8 hours binge watching your videos 😅 I'm hooked! My boyfriend just started a 3 on 1 off fifo gig and I now know what I'll be doing whilst hes away (decking out his Hilux canopy). Love how your videos are easy to understand but also very informative and explain honest pros and cons. Keep up the great work, you have a new fan 😊
In a very strange coincidence, I clicked away from the MRT 'explorer package' site and went to TH-cam to se served this video as my first recommend-o with it being only a few hours old.
With the cooker you could turn it upside-down and mount to the roof (might need a strap to retain the cooker cover). Split the roof and hinge at the base of the end (L shape frame) so that you can flip the roof down so the cooker now sits upright but lower than the base of the draw. This lowers the cook top height as well as gives you additional bench space (the floor of where the cooker currently sits) also at a lower height (the base of the draw)
Awesome run-down of your canopy 👍 Just curious how much does the canopy weigh with all your gear on ? And do you know what your dry weight was before installing all your items
Thanks Daniel - you’re definitely a kid in a lollie shop now - it’s such a voyage of discovery and after 18 mths trialling the setup I can now permanently install everything- after receiving an outrageous quote for the fit out like you I’ve decided to continue doing my own and putting the money saved towards a good electronic setup - I’m using a 1600mm lift off ETB (VIC] canopy (internal and underfloor tube bracing) and still working through the latch to tray fixing design after replacing them with better ones from Bunnings - the 1800mm aluminium tray allows 200mm for fitting jerry can holder and mountain bike carrier and now I’m a drawer slide expert 👨🏼🎓
Hey Daniel, great review and videos. Any chance you could do a review on how the canopy is going after a couple of years at the wear points like hinges, water seals, door handles and locks etc and welded joins as these canopies remain fairly young since first coming out and there aren’t really videos from people owning a couple of years.
Great video, very informative and professional, great product, one thing I will say is how much the 4wd scene & 4wd products & accessories has exploded over recent years, only way I could afford your canopy set up is to put it on my mortgage, don't know how some people afford those accessories especially with family/children, looks awesome though
Yeah the accessories can add up a bit. In saying that, the canopy itself remains the same no matter how many or few accessories you choose - I was really happy with the original entry level canopy on the old Ranger which was about 1/3 of the price. 🙂
Thanks David! With this configuration, only the second lid can be used given the accessories on the back, and both can be opened when then canopy is lifted off which I find is when I need the extra storage the most haha. I believe a new model drawer is in the works to be more suitable for rear accessories but best to confirm with MRT
Great set up . I have the same large drawer from mrt as well. Unfortunately the catch system / lock is flogging out on one side and I may have to install a barrel bolt or something on it to stop it flying out . Keep an eye on it
Great summary thanks Daniel. The MRT gear looks the goods. Can you give me an idea of your total set up and combined vehicle/canopy weight please? I'd like to work out what suspension would work best with the type of canopy (weight wise) I have in mind.
Thanks mate. I weighed the car + canopy back when I had just finished the kitchen build and it was 2.84t without food, water and only 1/4 tank of fuel (once I've completed a few more mods I'll do an updated weigh in and also work out the canopy weight by itself too). Side note, did this video show up on the regular TH-cam feed for you? It's not set to public yet so just trying to work out where it's showing up haha.
@@explorebound There were 2 videos I stumbled across early this morning. The one I watched was labelled Version 3. I had a quick look at the other one which seemed to be the same content. Oh how strange! Must be a TH-cam glitch I'd say seeing as it's only had 2x views, one being yourself and the other me for checking purposes. Early access viewing for you! 🙂

Great insight! Looking at doing a similar set up just wondering what height clearance you have with roof top tent? I’d like to park in my garage also 😂
Thanks! Economy is between 13 - 14L / 100km depending on how hilly the terrain is. Hoping it will improve with an ecu remap at some point in the future.
Question mate... the accessories inside like the draws and kitchen pantry and all that. Is it modular? As in can you move them around to your liking or are they just bolted in and thats it. to move them do you need to drill more holes?
G'day mate, great set up! I was just wondering if you can still open the doors on your canopy when it is lifted off the back of the ute tray & suspended on the legs? Do the doors clear the legs or do the legs get in the way? Thanks mate.
Hey Daniel, great video. Just got curious about what is actually included in the whole setup and the full price of around $15K So from what I understood that's the flatbed and the canopy, installed, correct? What about the tent, awning, etc. Is that included? Cheers
Hey mate, the price is essentially for the 'shell', so just the basic tray and canopy itself. The tent, awning etc are all accessories I've added afterwards and not included in the price.
Hey Paul, yep with this configuration only the second lid can be used given the accessories on the back, and both can be opened when then canopy is lifted off 👍
So, the tray base price is $16,000 and the Canopy is $3,000 is equals to 14.5K (as you mentioned this as the price of what you have right now)? I'm a bit confused as the math aint mathing. Unless I missed something.
hey mate, can l ask how the nomad hard top has held up? looking at getting one soon and there's no reviews anywhere besides yours from a while ago. Cheers
Hey mate! I'm currently trialling a different version so the Dune hasn't been on the car for a few months, but it was faultless over the first year - a brilliant tent that I'll most likely be swapping back to very soon. 🙂
Ud be able to fit a spare tyre in the factory mount under the tray between the chassis rails, as there is a factory cross member under there to wind the tyre on and off, with the supplied tyre changing kit they give u.
Hey mate, I don't believe they offer any water tanks as yet - I'm planning on running an undertray tank that replaces the factory spare wheel for mine (as my spare now sits on the canopy).
The drawer I had installed when this video was made was for previous canopy setups without rear accessories, so only the rear lid could be opened, however I've since had it swapped over to the current version designed for rear accessories that has one larger lid that clears the ladder etc. 🙂

Good spot! The drawer installed in the video was an old model not designed for rear accessories - I've now had it swapped over for the current model that has a larger single lid designed to clear the rear ladder. 🙂
@explorebound Nice, I like your canopy setup and at a good price compared to a lot of others out there most start around $20,000 just for the canopy with no accessories, that leaves a lot of leftover cash to spend on decking the vehicle out, will be interested to see how it holds up after a few years of use
Hey mate, the keyless entry system was an option when ordering the canopy - but MRT also sells this as an aftermarket kit, here's a link to my install of the aftermarket kit in my old canopy: th-cam.com/video/nIrFWNdF1uM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=anPODQq3P6JISt-o

For your ladder i suggest get some foam and padd it up where it rubs the door I did that zero rubbing now
Nice set-up and informative video.
How much did you spend all up ?
Can't wait to start gearing my Dmax up, the hardest thing I've found is deciding on a bullbar 😩
Bullbars are a tough decision nowadays! Lots of good options out there. 🙂
Dmax has SO MANY options as well. With my trailblazer there were only a handful to choose from.
Looks like good value. Other's are upwards of $30K plus.
Awesome video, very informative. Im sold!
Great video,
Can I ask when you open the rear draw, do both the lids open on the draw table with the ladder there ?
Hope this makes sense!
It looked like the second lid would foul on the ladder/tyre.

Awesome setup and a fantastic presentation!
Your setup cost more than my Highlux, just saying 😂

Nice video mate
Id like to see a comparison between bare vs. powder coated white vs black, insulated vs uninsulated canopies.
Great video only thing that would make the build better are whale tail door handles
I agree, plenty of other chinese made canopies have whale tails. Mrt need to jump on board with it aswell.
Nice video legend super informative keep it up legend.
i like the solid look of the canopy clamps, what brand are they?
Hey mate, the whole setup is MRT 👍

Would be cool if the tent had a pass through into the canopy.

On long trips do you take 2 spairs. If so where do you put the second one
I’ve only ever just taken the one spare for our trips - that being said I could fit a second spare in the factory mounting spot under the tray. 🙂
Ud be able to fit a spare tyre in the factory mount under the tray between the chassis rails, as there is a factory cross member under there to wind the tyre on and off, with the supplied tyre changing kit they give u.
Hey mate, thanks for sharing. Do you know if there’s an option for an inbuilt water tank with the MRT tray? Can’t seem to find anything online. Cheers
Hey mate, I don't believe they offer any water tanks as yet - I'm planning on running an undertray tank that replaces the factory spare wheel for mine (as my spare now sits on the canopy).
Would you be so kind to provide the height of your garage door opening please.
Hi Adrian, the clearance of my garage is 2.22m - at the very front it's a bit higher, but the supports on the garage door drop it down to 2.22.
Can you access the back storage compartment in the under tray drawer or is it blocked by the canopy ladder?
The drawer I had installed when this video was made was for previous canopy setups without rear accessories, so only the rear lid could be opened, however I've since had it swapped over to the current version designed for rear accessories that has one larger lid that clears the ladder etc. 🙂
can you open your second tray drawer lid? looks like it would hit the ladder. i am about to hit the trigger on this package from MRT
Hey mate, the drawer on mine was a bit of a prototype originally designed for canopys without rear accessories so only the rear lid opens when the canopy is on, however the new version has a different lid design to clear the rear accessories (double check this with them if you end up ordering one to be sure). 🙂
I noticed with the undertray slideout draw it looked like you couldn't get access to the second storage area due to the ladder and tyre overhang ?
