    In this video Guthrie Govan answers a question regarding the fast arpeggio sequence in the song Wonderful Slippery Thing. You will see the arpeggio played at full speed and then broken down as Guthrie explains his approach to this ferocious tapped guitar lick.
    The lick uses some two handed tapping across multiple strings, first finger hammer ons and arpeggio shapes to create a very cool, very fast lick! The whole lick is based around a Dmaj7 Arpeggio that is laid out along single string groupings.

      @Quimerateck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i just keep trying, but still not building speed, not the one of the solo

    • @necroyoli08
      @necroyoli08 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      sipimanify For me a good way to work on speed is to play things at a comfortable tempo from the first note to the last. Once you hit the last note reverse it back to the first one keeping that same tempo, and just when you hit the first note again start over but from the last note and without losing your tempo all the way down so when you hit the first note again you end up on the last note. This makes you play all of the notes in both directions equally, until it starts feeling like a single musical idea (in this case as an arpeggio) instead of a group of notes. In the end you'll have two new versions of the arpeggio forming a single line: 1) from top to top 2) from end to end. Now, for the speed part, instead of consciously trying to play things faster you just try to fit these versions of the arpeggio in the same tempo, meaning that whatever time it took for you to play the arpeggio from top to end should be the same time it takes you to play it from top to top, or from end to end. Of course I wouldn't apply this principle with the three octave arpeggio from the begining, but rather to the three octaves separately (this will be easy, given that it only takes one shape) and then work on the joints like Guthrie said (which after all this practice should be even easier). Also keep in mind that this is all hammered on, therefore every bit and step of this practice should be hammered on, even when you reverse the lick on a single string.

      i have no problem with the H-O thx to my gamming pc xD, but the way u explain this is making my practice a bit more interesting and easy, ty for this useful response i really apreciate it :D

      @shredd5705 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Problem is the index finger, most guitarists use it as a "barre" thing, just holding on to a string. Not hammering or pull-offs. You gotta do a lot of tapping with open string like Hot For Teacher opening, or Michael Romeo style string skipping (or this Guthrie lick, duh) to get it working. Even if it's the strongest finger in power sense, it's actually the weakest for many guitarists, in the coordination sense

      @@burnsZY85 Distortion hides some mistakes, clean sound hides others (lack of compression on clean channel hides the small unwanted string noises, where as compression of distortion brings them out more but requires less strength and less even strength distribution). Practice on both, neither is "easier" they just bring out different mistakes. Good compromise is a distorted sound with not a lot of gain, best of both worlds

    One must have maximum facility to get that stretch needed to pull off stuff and strong hammer abilities on the left hand pinky finger. I don't have the stretch i used to. I was thinking of having Warmoth build me a Mustang scale neck only with a nice 1 7/8" wide nut and a Floyd string spacing. Adrian Belew had Modded some Stangs, and they're really cool except my fingertips are too big for a standard mustang, much less a standard thin Strat.

      Not as a "brag" but this is very easy to reach. If people are struggling then maybe try adjusting your thumb on the neck (towards the high e). Stretches would probably help too. I have small hands and do struggle sometimes but I think this is very manageable for anyone.

    • @237iggy
      @237iggy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LukeInside Gilbert's phrasing would be a joke for Guthrie to play.
      I do like Gilbert a lot but Guthrie is on another level.
      Gilbert's playing, whether string skipping, alternate picking, legato, etc is pretty straightforward compared to what Govan plays.

    • @aimfuldrifter
      @aimfuldrifter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saketh 1991 It may seem straightforward but Guthrie wouldn't play Gilbert licks just like that. He would after some practice to master it like Gilbert did, to get the hang of string skipping - he just doesn't use that too much. What I dislike in Guthrie's playing is the "nervous vibrato". Sometimes it sounds like he is vibrating too fast, other times it's ok. Every guitar player has his own style and that's good, gives some variety.

    • @237iggy
      @237iggy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LukeInside Yes i said Gilbert's phrasing would be easy for Guthrie, And yes if he did practise string skipping he would nail it pretty soon, if he wanted to that is. Guthrie's phrases are much more interesting. His use of melodic minor, chromatics etc and his wide spectrum of influences are amazing whereas Gilbert mostly uses natural minor, which i do like but after hearing Guthrie its not as interesting thats all. I don't exactly understand what you mean by nervous Vibrato. Guthrie doesn't just do one kind of vibrato which i think is a good thing. His embellishments are highly detailed and intricate whether he is doing a vibrato or something else.

    • @aimfuldrifter
      @aimfuldrifter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saketh 1991 I've seen him doing various vibrato styles but most of the time it's still a little too "nervous". He should practice the smootheness of it and as for Guthrie - it would probably be like one evening. Gary Moore is one of the best examples of a smooth vibrato, almost perfect. Do not underestimate Gilbert who has learned many blues and jazz tricks, licks and knowledge within a year or so. He could have work on being more interesting though. He was too long in glam and rock in my opinion. That's what I always say about him - one of the best in the world but he uses his "famous licks" too often. In the early '90s he remembered more scales - there used to be a video with him on TH-cam where he had shown some exotic scales. I guess that he doesn't work on that stuff anymore. Gilbert is the king of fast licks, pull-offs, string skipping and so on but he's too repetitive, that's true. That's why I prefer to watch Gilbert's licks just for a while and then listen to more interesting songs of Guthrie. Govan implements more things like changes of the tempo and more scales.
