Once upon a time, I went to a music store in Austin to drop off my home-recorded entry for a guitar contest. I was confident. While in that shop (Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas Music) on that day, there were multiple staff in the amplifier area of the store who were huddling around a guitarist, the guts of an amp head exposed, sitting atop of the cabinet. They were trying out tube combinations for this guy, whose playing made me want to go and pull my cassette tape back out of the entry box and just go home... give up. Turned out that the guitarist in the store that day was Eric Johnson. He became my guitar hero, regardless of how discouraging that level of skill was to me as a teen. Short story, though... Guthrie is my latest guitar God discovery, and damn the press for not making him as available as their higher profile darlings. This guy and the other band members playing with him are top tier. Guthrie Govan!!!
Jeremiah Lopez I have to disagree, Jimi Hendrix is easily the most influential guitarist there has ever been. That does not mean that he is the best, in terms of pure technical ability Shawn Lane and Guthrie Govan are the best people I have seen.
Some of the most jaw dropping playing I've heard is from the Bluegrass genre. Precision picking complex melodic runs at lightning speed, and on an acoustic guitar. Those flatpicking competition clips on youtube make me want to throw my guitar i the trash.
5:37 here we can appreciate a true face of happiness. When Guthrie turns around and look at the rhythm guitar guy, trying to lead him into the next part of the song. There are a few things in life thats gonna make you smile like that.
Unpopular opinion: I dig his playing but not his tone. The would-be clean is sterile and without character or clean single coil depth and the overdrive is kinda woollen with a samey twangy treble cut, and the timebased stuff is pretty generic in and of itself. They’re all middle of the road tones that can be done better individually within the style with dedicated gear. Part of the problem probably derives from the strings being so close to the fretboard to accommodate the style that it comes at a cost of tone. To me most of the tones themselves have been taken to more ultimate places by many others.

This is my introduction to guthrie so I can't say I'm a 'fan', but I really do enjoy this, and as a guitar player that has listened to most of the 'great' shredders like vai, malmsteen, johnson etc, some of the playing in this song has me beside myself in aw of his perfect technique, articulation, and clarity of notes. He could play 30 notes in a second, and I would hear every single one
Guthrie is great guitar player , he shares his experience to everybody and helps lots of people to learn and understand music . thanks Guthrie , you're amazing.
I know this is an old comment, but you've probably never heard of Shawn Lane or Jon Gomm either - I come across new ones all the time. It's a little bit scary just how many extraordinary guitar players there are/have been who for whatever reason never seem to make it to the big leagues. I went on one of Guthrie Govan's guitar masterclasses a couple of years ago (highly recommended if you can do one) and I think the guy is genuinely happy with what he does. He gets to do some performing/recording, some music journalism and teaching. He's just a guy who loves music and he's never pursued celebrity (though he could).
I'm just so happy seeing a guitarist enjoying the hell out of himself onstage. What a great jazz and rock feel he has, and being able to just dish it out whenever he feels, that's just incomparable!
1:51 Guthrie has always said that the tapping arpeggio line there is hit or miss and extremely hard to play standing up. So I love coming back to this video because he nails it like the album here.
Bro watching this love makes me want to cry. The harmony is so good. The technique is out of this world. Such a juicy melody. That turnaround/chorus part is so yummy. Oh my goodness. To be clear, this is a great performance that I like to watch now and then because it's groovy, I just think the other musicians are not as tight as what Guthrie is used to (because they aren't familiar of course!) so some of the little details/nuances weren't there.

The one thing I appreciate about Guthrie is his clarity. A lot of shredders and fast players sound mushy. But when I hear Guthrie shred it's clean!
A lot of the notes aren't necessary though, it's just fast for the sake of it
Because he plays a different genre, metal shredders sound harsher because of distortion
Agreed. I think it mostly has to do with how amazing his legato is
That's the beauty of proper legato technique

No podria estar sentado viendo a govan tocar... es mas, veria de pie todo el recital! Por favor ese solo es increible...
Guthrie es revolucionario.
So many souls in one song
that slapping he does at the beginning is out of controll
Man the bass player had an awesome groove... then he soloed
he needs to play harder or some shit wtf is w this solo. maybe just needed to change his set up
The best I have ever seen..
My new obsession. Listening to the master, Guthrie govan on the ax. All day. Playing my guitar when the songs are over. & Smoking herb all day ehrry day throughout this orgie of music notes, cool chords, & ... Uhmm.... Awesomeness.. ?!..
After a lot of hard work, practice, blood, sweat and tears, I am finally able to move the camera just like the camera guy 🙌
My neighbor called the cops on me for playing this too loud. They arrested him immediately.
Really good man! Had me dying!
This comment comes from a comment of marooned by pink floyd😂

wow!!!! amazing! even the bassist to is great!
I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this guy until today. The clarity of his playing is stunning.
Coming back each year here to celebrate perfection.
The guy on rhythm guitar looks like a high school student lol
NeuralNetProcessor but he play slick tho
Is it Ruben Wan?
Drop out student playing guitar.
probably he has 50 years... asian...
Maybe he is... and this fact would made him even greater
this guy is basically the most talented guitarist that was ever born.
Amine Chaabini Really love that slap, so envious of it.
@@user-eb8mi3xi5f Buckhead> imo
Yeah! After Shawn Lane :)
Amine Chaabini yeah but he plays such uninteresting pieces and compositions are boring.
....Shawn lane and holdsworth? Both died before such innovations developed but could do it and maybe more so than govan
you complain about the bass player? dude, he plays with the master himself. show some respect for this guy lml
Very inspirational and emotional. Lots of great techniques. Viewers this is for all the guitarist outhere.. You can try to copy , learn. practice and play his style.
the way guthrie slap the guitar is terrific !
Guthries playing has just made my knee caps fall off.
😂😂😂
Is it just me or does he look exactly like 70's Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)?
Even Guthrie mentioned that he looks like him.
His legato is insanely clean
If this isn't perfection, I don't know what this is. He is soooo awesome live !
When a player can do more than even your wildest fantasy. He is playing faster and better than i can even think, let alone move. Dang.
