The oldest koi in the world was reported to be 226 years of age. This is a legend typically heard at koi shows, a place filled with the people that love koi the most. She was estimated to be hatched in the year 1751, 5 years before Mozart, 19 years before before Beethoven, and 58 years before Abraham Lincoln. That was 25 years before our nation's founders signed The Declaration of Independence. She died in July of 1977, and was mourned by a nation of koi lovers.
Silje Ostrem this is not the oldest fish or koi living this type is the first koi or captive bred fish ,,, in the world ,, under stand ? in other words the chagoi is the oldest type of koi ,,, hope this helps , the oldest koi that has been recorded is or was 226 years old
I wouldn't be that hard to write "The oldest breed of koi", would it ?...I came here to see the "World's oldest koi", not the "World's oldest breed of koi"...it's the title of the video //-))
then it should have explicitly stated the worlds oldest breed. The title is not correct and does not describe the content of the video. There is only one way to correctly interpret the title. The title means that this is a video about the oldest individual koi. If breed was intended then breed should have been included. It was not. Russell is correct. This is click bait pure and simple.
The oldest koi in the world was reported to be 226 years of age. This is a legend typically heard at koi shows, a place filled with the people that love koi the most, though this fish was reputed to be not the most striking color, and not an amazing show fish. I would venture to say though, that Hanako was the most beloved koi ever. Translated as "Flower Girl", Hanako spent her long life in the hands of generations of the Koshihara family, who loved her as jewels, because she was so special. Each family member charged with her care received instructions to ensure her health and welfare for the length of their lives. She spent her life in the crystal clear waters of a pond less than 20' across, at the base of Mount Ontake, in the Mino Province of Japan, along with five other koi reported to also be over a hundred years each. Researchers at Nagoya Women's College had determined her age based on the growth rings on her scales, similar to the way a tree's age is determined by its growth rings. It took two months of studying the scales through a light microscope to determine how many rings there were. Though not one hundred percent accurate, due to weather patterns, and food availability, they feel this estimate was very good. People still talk of Hanako today, wondering if the legend is true, and wishing their koi will live as long.
Fascinating! A lot of what Shawn says about valuing body conformation and scalation over color pattern is exactly what I strive for in my butterfly telescope goldfish, who are cousins of the majestic koi! Thanks for sharing.
+CindyLou Who Shawn does not have a personal pond. All the koi that travel through his facility belong to him for the rest of his life at some level if you know what I mean.
Now I have seen it :) that is such an amazing story!!! I had heard of this legend but never knew the details, thank you for sharing this with us! By the way, I have a Chagoi in my pond and my idea was having a friendly koi because I hope someday they (have 8 Kois actually) will come to eat from my hand :) so now beside friendly I know I gain in size and longevity! :) Mine is a brown one and I love him!!! Best regards!!
I grew up at a house on a 5 acre bass and brim pond my parents bought the house from an older lady who said she released a koi right before we moved in. 19 years later this thing is huge close to 3 foot don't know what kind it is but it's ghost white with no pattern. any help to what kind it is
Brim pond and 19 years, I'm guessing you're close to the midwestern part of the country where there's an abundance of nutrient-rich clay soil, all in all you're still reading and I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Hey Eric, perhaps a future video at Mystic Koi showing the grounds and how Shawn runs his filtration for his Koi? I think that could be pretty interesting. Thanks for all the videos you make, always entertaining!
Will Eberli We are trying to show teasers of parts of his place. Stay Tuned for more. Shawn is currently in Japan but we will be filming with him again soon!
what is the age of this Chagoi? I noticed what looks to me as a Gin Rin Goshiki at 5:30??? Is that what it is, hard to tell. Do you have a video of this koi? Do you have any Ai Goromo/Budo Goromo? do you have any videos of them if you do?
+S Ann I think this koi was roughly 5 years old if I remember correctly. We have not filmed Goromo yet but we do plan on featuring this amazing variety. Thanks for watching and stay tuned.
I sure hope "most people" don't think this is an "ugly fish." Yeah, you don't want a pond full of them, gotta have some vibrant colors in there. But that girl is a beauty in all her symmetry and simplicity. thanks for the vids, as always, Pond Digger!
Mona B Often times you are looking for a small koi with genetics of the large koi! You really need to check with your local dealer to find out the source of your small koi. You want to pull juvenile koi from the right gene pool to grow yourself a MONSTER. While some varieties of koi are more likely to get larger than others, like this variety.
Do you keep any of the Doitsu koi? Or, do you keep with the traditional Wagoi as being a breeder/judge for shows? The shine is beautiful for doitsu, I love it. If you have any do you notice any issues or them being more delicate because they are scaleless?
+S Ann I am a fan of both varieties. Many people will keep a doitsu in their pond just because A scaleless fish does reveal skin issues visually before the koi with scales. I can't say that the doitsu is more sensitive than the others. Offer great water quality and all the koi will be amazing.
Hi any thoughts on what i should do. I have to work on a twenty year pond. I have fifteen Koi in the pond and they are large. i need to put them in something for a day or two while i work on the pond. what should i do? They need to be put in something to stay alive. When the pros have this task what do they do?
+Harry Styles *Clickbait :D & Yes it very much was. I truly appreciated stumbling upon this channel, & love animals - especially when a hobbyist exudes PASSION - which these guys truly do. Now of course the title is intentionally misleading, & a prefix such as "discussing" would of made clear the contents. This is however a ploy used to compete on TH-cam, as quality videos can fall into the never-seen reaches of TH-cam if they don't have some sort of clickbait to them (Aside from large subbed channel content.) This is done by manipulating the name and/or picture - & quite frankly, shouldn't be condemned as it is needed for growth in the current medium YT is. I might not of stumbled upon this video & thus the channel I have now subbed if not for the traffic garnered by a simple tactic. They won't receive as much funding from YT for people who view tiny fragments of it, so greed really isn't behind this - it's outreach! Hope that helped you understand more & hate less!
I definitely won't argue the frustration associated with setting your expectations to a certain, (VERY) reasonable level - only to have it dropped. It just happens that through our voracious consumption of content on the internet, we've created this necessity (for channels/sites to grow amid the MASSIVE amount of competitors) - So I guess I'm just saying it's here to stay because it works. I've become way more callous to links on the internet - "Pff, title must be too good to be true" - but it kind of creates its own reward when you find something that truly delivers. Haha ^_^-b Cheers to you, wish you the best in your future internet finds!!

This is the oldest LIVING koi in the world

+ThePondDigger I was born in July 1977...perhaps I am the reincarnation of her. ;) Next I'd like to come back as a cat
Cool...
There is no photo or video of the oldest KOI. You lied to us to make us click on your video. For shame.
I think you interpreted the title wrong. This is the oldest breed of koi. Not the oldest living koi! (:

I agree its really not ugly compared to others
Baby McGee no it's not sure it nots the best looking koi but it's giant which makes it more appealing
Not ugly. Just unexpected.
Not ugly. The plain wild color of this chagoi is fine
Sean speaks with so much passion. Looks like he really loves what he does.

It's called, tracing back to generations of old koi
Zeze Whiite It's called click baiting
Thx
has Shawn ever done a video of his personal koi collection?? if not I would LOVE to see it!
+CindyLou Who Shawn does not have a personal pond. All the koi that travel through his facility belong to him for the rest of his life at some level if you know what I mean.
oh gotcha! is the facility open to the public? I would love to visit one day, though I do not have the funds to purchase anything lol
I love this channel. I don't know diddly about koi, but these dudes rock. I like these videos.
+Jeff McDonald Thanks Jeff!!
I think that fish is gorgeous! Why does that guy keep saying it's ugly?
Melissa - u calling that fish ugly but he also ugly ;))
Because it doesn't have colors, but that's natural, the older the koi the more faded the colors are, what I'm saying is his colors just faded away...
Well because it looks plain and it doesn't really stand out, but anyways this is one of my favorites so far. ( because it is simple)
It's called a chagoi, named from Cha meaning tea and going meaning koi. The color is tea colored, so they said it's ugly
Better looking then that jerk.
my dad bought some koi before i was born, and they're about 30 years old now. They are very big, too

That's what dissapointment feels like
😂😂😂
Carp your enthusiasm
Idk about that. That fish probably going eat that strag cat.
Billy Lee pretty sure the fish will swallow it like an atm
Absalutely beautiful. The size just amazes me. Will the smaller ones I have seen grow that big, or are they different sizes?
Mona B Often times you are looking for a small koi with genetics of the large koi! You really need to check with your local dealer to find out the source of your small koi. ThePondDigger Thank you so much for that information. Seems like a lot goes into it. :)
This channel feels like it was all filmed in one day in the same spot
This is a legend, never proven as fact.
my neighbor had a koi pond with probably 6 koi and every single one was bigger than this one. I think she said the one was around 20 years old.

Are the butterfly koi shown? Or, just mainly seen as a "cute" aquarium/pond fish?
+S Ann Japanese breeders as a whole do not consider butterfly koi pure and do not promote or breed them.
I don't know why I watched this, but I loved it.
So , this koi is older than all of us?
WE not exactly THIS koi but the legend of Hanako the Oldest koi. Thank you for watching!
This is one of the most beautiful fish I have seen. The color is amazing! I like how their name comes from tea 😊.
Are they cheaper to buy?
What do they taste like?
