@@maxdoles5806 not quite. .22lr, .25, can't be trusted to penetrate a rib, sternum, skull, etc. Some lower powered JHP's, if they expand, may not penetrate enough for some targets & angles. .380, light .38 spl, light 9x19, can have sub par penetration, meaning you may want to place shots differently.
@@josephpepper3087 If we want to get technical, all I said was "the right place", which varies based on caliber. All I'm getting at is that one should never get into the mindset of thinking shot placement is irrelevant as long as you have a strong caliber.
An interesting test would be running the .25acp punch against .22 LR punch. I actually think that .22LR would put on a better show, not that either are worth consideration.
I would be not so sure about that. 22LR was created to perform well in rifles (LONG RIFLE is in the name for a reason) and the shorter barrel of a handgun has a mitigating effect on speed and energy. 25ACP was created to match balistics of a 22LR in a small gun with short barrel (Vest guns), so they should be more or less equivalents.
When the bullets tumble going into the target it becomes a mixed blessing. With small cal bullets it greatly reduces penetration but it does create a far larger wound channel. It's not all good news but not necessarily all bad. The BB bullet may be too long for the rifling twist of the pistol also causing tumbling issues. Before the micro 380's & micro 9mm's came out there was more use for the little 22 and 25 ACP in tiny pocket pistols but today most of the time we can get away with carrying a larger caliber pistol in a similar sized package. However, when I have to be 100% sure a pistol doesn't print and is concealed to anyone, I'll grab my little Baby Browning 25ACP. It's a high quality pistol that's 100% reliable and I can put a magazine in a face sized target at 7 yards very quickly. IMO that is what these pistols (22's and 25's) are useful for today.
you made the important distinction, "STOPPING". Of course a .25 can kill, and of course nobody wants down range, but will it kill in a timely fashion? very unlikely.
Which, really, for civilian carry, means it's not very useful at all. If it won't reliably stop somebody who is trying to hurt you, then it's just pocket weight.
@@lardomcfarty9866 CCI 22LR out of LCP22 will penetrate one side of steel drum and heavily dent the backside at 30 yards. The 25acp won't even penetrate the front side in same test, I've tried. I'll stick to 22LR aguila and CCI, though aguila does have a bit too much wax coat, but no failures in NAA pug, tx22 compact, LCP22, 10/22, or keltec p17.
Cheap 25 ACP pistols equal cheap performance. Beretta's fiction great in 25 ACP. 50 grain FMJ's are the way to go for these mouse guns. And yes the 25ACP has the same energy as a 22LR out of those really short barrels. 25 ACP fires more reliably then a rimfire. Thanks for the test.
The reliability thing may have been true long ago, but not anymore. Federal punch in .22lr absolutely embarrasses .25acp of any kind. The cheap pistol has nothing to do with how weak this stuff is. I can stick the stuff in an unrealistic gun just to make people feel better, but we all know what your average .25acp user is using it in.
@@ToolsandTargets I went back and watched your Beretta 21A 22LR video with Federal Punch and Winchester ammo. The Punch had 71 ft/lbs of energy with the Winchester below that. My Beretta 950 BS chrono's 50 grain FMJ's at 808 FPS = 71 ft/lbs. The same energy. I really appreciate your videos and yes the 25 ACP is really anemic but so is the 22LR with the same barrel. Thank goodness the tiny 380's that are available. I do however like that you are testing 25 ACP. I've backpacked and have been to the tops of many mountains in Colorado and the little 25 ACP provide just enough security when weight is a consideration.
I’m reminded of what the late Col Cooper said about the .25acp. He said “a 25 auto is a nice thing to have when you can’t have a gun”. I only have one 25acp in my collection a 1954 Beretta 418, which I believe has a 3.5” barrel. To me it is a collectible range toy. Several years ago I decided I had to have a 25 in my collection and while looking for a Colt or Baby Browning, I happened across this Beretta. Well I wanted a quality example of a mouse gun and the Beretta fit the description. It was my first Beretta but not my last. I think I now have 9 or 10 including 3 rifles and pistols in .22LR, 6.35mm, 7.65mm, 380 & 9mm.
25's are fun. My 418 is very accurate. It amazes me. I really think some shapes and designs with some people really make the gun guide the person into being a better shot.
I carry a Beretta 950 every day. GECO is the only round worth carrying. Fortunately I bought a lot of it. Just standard 50 grain FMJ round nose . Flawless function, accurate at any reasonable range. And you will find it in the 3rd water filled milk jug every time. Now if I am unfortunate enough to have to drive into Atlanta, I add a Glock 19 with three extra Mags. I'm a bit eccentric, but I'm not stupid. I have carried som odd weapons though from time to time. 1849 .31caliber Baby dragoon, Roth Steyr model 1907,, Bodeo 1889, J.P. Sauer &sohn model 1930. Just to name a few., 1852 ish .44 cal Gunnison & Griswald is fun to carry too. Weird choices, but all are capable weapons.
Approximately thirty years ago, I knew a very large man that was a bar owner. He got into a fight with another man and the opponent completed emptied a .25 pistol into his chest. He still went over and beat the guy to a pulp before going to the hospital. No joke.
@alanrogs3990 my great great uncle died from one shot. Bullet got lodged in his pancreas or kidney or something and died about a week later from infection. That was long ago though
Thanks for the demo. Yes. Definitely a round to use when you absolutely can't carry something heavier. Like when taking a run, biking or something where you can't afford to print. 8 inches of penetration from that distance can leave a mark for sure. As another poster mentioned, a "get off me" blaster with a more reliable ignition system. But carry a quality pistol. Not a cheap junker... and a reload....mebbe two?
.25 ACP is basically a more reliable .22 lr powered cartridge when you find a relible gun. The center-fire priming is why. It was also made for a time when medical care was not very good , so being shot was always potentially lethal no matter where you got hit or with how small the bullet. Infection was a lot harder to deal with .
I have few .25s and my Lorcin cycles the best of any of them. That’s not saying much. I wouldn’t trust my life to .25 either way but they are just cool imo.
The 25 is a weak round. I suspect that penetration is limited by the bullets keyholing the gel. John Browning designed the 25 as a centerfire equivalent of the 22LR for personal protection. Rimfire in those days was notoriously unreliable. Having a small and reliable gun, especially for women, was ground breaking. But today, I think we can do better, a lot better.
This ammo should be renamed "Goat Bore" to more accurately reflect its power ! But it is a 25 ACP so can't do much more with it. It should not be used for bear defense ! Glad the weather has moderated so you don't boil and sweat out there in the heat while performing these tests for us. Thanks !
👍👍 Thanks Tools, yeah the video kinda lets you know about the caliber and not so much about the brand of ammo. That sharp stick is looking pretty good.
I love watching this test. I was shocked to see your choice of tools for this one. I always considered you as a Home Depot and not a Harbor Freight guy. I expected to see a Beretta or Colt. But to see a Loricin which is like a Raven or FIE Titan surprised me. But it really does not matter because we all know you won't be carrying that for self defense.
I had an chrome Raven .25 back in the late 70's that I bought brand new for $25 bucks. I have to say that it wasn't much more powerful than a BB gun but it never jammed on me like that Lorcin T&T was using.
I appreciate your format is typically two loads . But as a new caliber to your channel, we need to see a baseline , of the predominate , standard ammo , for context The 50gr FMJ Or to make a typical episode , the .25acp 50gr FMJ in comparison to .32scp 71gr FMJ , from a Micro Gun , such as Kel Tec , Gaurdian, or Betetta Tomcat .
When I worked in the ER (I'm an RN) of a large trauma hospital in a ghetto we had a guy who was shot in the forehead with a .25. There was an exit wound on the back of his head. He was fine--the round went under his scalp and exited through the skin in the back of his head without penetrating his skull. It was a near point-blank shot and the spent case had fallen down his sweatshirt.
Winchester 45 grain expanding point is the best performing.25 acp cartridge available. It was in short supply but a few places have gotten it back in stock. That projectile may not expand like the name says but with that steel BB in the nose it can penetrate almost 16”. I would love to see that stuff tested again to see if it is still loaded to the same spec as the twelve year old stuff you tested.
Buffalo bore tumbled probably a bit more and lost penetration due to that. A lorcin and its potmetall siblings are known to have pretty loose barrels to keep pressures low and out a decent .25 pistol you would probably gain some velocity and maybe more stabilisation for the longer Buffalo bore bullet. No sense for a hollow point in a .25 or .22 in such short barrels. That Federal punch is week, even for a .25. In a decent reliable pistols with a halfway good 50 grain fmj i would definatley take the .25 over a comparable .22 pistol - If that is my only choice.
I can guarantee you most people who are still foolish enough to rely on a .25acp for their main defense, is carrying it in a trash gun like this. So this is what can be expected in "the real world."
you get a bad guy that's jacked up on meth and he is persistent to seriously hurt you that 25 would act like a mosquito bite to he or her. That ain't no lie. I'm pretty amazed that you can find ammo for those. Those guns are just trinkets now. Conversation Piece on collector's item that's about it. I'm still impressed by Buffalo Bore, I mean for a factory round it did better than I thought it was going to do.. you always make your videos pretty unique and exciting. You are probably one of the best or the best on ballistic testing. Very awesome work sir❤❤
I still carry a 950 Jetfire, when I run, in small purpose built running water bottle concealed carry pack. I always felt 9 angry bees will make the get the F off me point, if needed.
Hey get this i have a 25cal pcp hatsan AT44 long qe, i have it set to shoot 34 grain jsb at 860 fps ,it went 15 and a quarter inches through my gel block, but thats without clothing just plain gel ,i think its plenty powerful enough with head shot ,i also have 25cal aea challenger, thats about 78 fpe ,i think the twist rate of the barrel has a lot to do with the bullet drilling the gel because straight because these are so accurate and penetrate deep
Try some European rounds such as Fiocchi xtp or ppu fmj PPU seems to be the better round for your money in terms of price, availability and reliability. Still those xtp 25 acp are great to stack with ppu fmj's
the last time i saw a gun that small in a caliber i'd like was the 32 North American Auto round. i think it was just a tad heavier like 40 grains but out of a little NAA pistol it would go a respectable 12-1400 feet per second so a little hotter on weight and speed than a 22 out of a rifle.
I would like to see you retest these rounds with another pistol. I suspect your choice of tool, the Lorcin and it's poor quality, caused the bullets to tumble, thus reducing penetration. I've seen both of these cartridges tested on alloutdoors channel, and they all achieved adequate penetration - especially the Buffalo Bore.
We had a guy a few years ago that killed multiple people with a raven .25. he was on the run in my neighborhood. As weak as it is i damn sure wouldn't want to be shot by one.
Well…. The Saturday Night special wasn’t so special lol. The little mouse guns have advanced so much from the .25 acp days I’m surprised any company makes anything other than fmj. I have a chrome and pearl grip Raven arms I like to shoot once in a while, but would never carry it. Still a very interesting test good sir 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Yeah noway I'd carry .25 for sd either, my wife carries a 9mm, and I carry .40 and personally if it was practical I'd carry a rifle 😂 so as things are right now I believe the .40 is about the best compromise of power and capacity, so I'll stick with that, as always love the tests and keep up the good work.
That was a good test. I had a cousin who was killed by two shots to the chest at almost point blank distance. He had his killer in a headlock and the killer managed to reach his pistol and shot my late cousin. He probably got his aorta or some other large vessel perforated.
One of my favorite things about 25 is that my V. Bernardelli with about a 1.5 inch barrel doesn't even have enough power to spall the bullets on steel. I have recovered several "buttons about 3/8 diameter and around an eighth incch thick.
I would be curious to see that little .25 in a test against a .22 pellet rifle! I cleaned a Lorcin 9mm that a buddy traded for, and that is the first tool that I ever refused to shoot... I could almost FEEL that pot metal slide going through my forehead, just looking at it...I cringed a little when you shot that Buffalo Bore out of that little tool :)
I think your low-quality gun is reducing velocity and not properly stabilizing the bullets. I carry a Beretta M21a .25 as a backup / pocket gun along with a S&W m&p 2.0 .40. I've found the Beretta .25's to be reliable & accurate. I only use 50 gr fmj. I also load / reload .25. I've got a stash of fmj bullets. (And new ammo) I've yet to find a pocket gun i like more that is small enough im willing to carry it. For me, the .25 backup gun is better than having no backup gun. I've had the P32, J-frames, LCR's, and several pocket .380's but i keep coming back to the Beretta m21a .25 for size, weight, accuracy, and practice / fun. I have 2 of them and Jetfires, too. A 50 gr FMJ at 850 fps is the best balance of power and reliability. 875 max. (My chrono) But they'll run at 700 fps. Most factory ammo gives me 725-750. I once made a batch that threw some over 1000 fps! Oops. Don't do that. I was probably lucky i didn't break anything. Mind you, i have chronographed some 40 gr .22lr over 1000 fps from a Beretta m21a .22lr. But that's a lighter bullet and lead, which reduce pressures. Although .25 has penetrated skulls & killed people quickly I'd absolutely not expect that performance. It's probably going to bounce or slide under the skin. One day i hope to find the perfect .380 or .32 mag to replace my .25's with.
All other video tests I've seen on this ammo penetrated over 12" in gel. All Outdoors had one hardcast Buffalo Bore round penetrate 21.5"! I'm really surprised at the results here. Especially given that the Buffalo Bore has more than 50% more muzzle energy than the Punch, with the dame caliber and similar bullet shape, I'm shocked that all the extra energy didn't push it further. These are indeed the best .25 ACP rounds, although there are a few other FMJs on par with but I don't think better than the Punch (Buffalo Bore makes one, etc.) That hardcast is certainly, on paper and in previous tests, the best .25 ACP round there is and the only one I would have trusted for defense. Not anymore. This video has changed my opinion of .25 ACP. I thought there was some premium .25 ammo that worked. Now I doubt that even the best high-end.25 ACP ammo is able to consistently penetrate adequately. Until now, I was sure that 60gr hardcast .25 Buffalo Bore was better than .22LR Punch. This video shows otherwise. I don't know why. I would have thought maybe it was some freak tumbling if you hadn't shot two rounds of hardcast Buffalo Bore that both penetrated 8.5". Pathetic. I expect more penetration from .22LR Federal Punch even from a 1" barrel (something like 11" penetration or so). Thanks for the valuable video. I wasn't going to carry a .25 because there are lighter, smaller, better .22 and .32 pistols to carry. The Kel-Tec P-32 is half the thickness and weight of the Beretta 950, and the other .25s are usually either unreliable junk guns or antiques. Some vintage guns loke the Baby Brownings are alright, but they're very obsolete at this point. Until now, I was hoping to see a modern polymer .25 ACP mini-pistol, like a tiny double-stack competitor to a mini-revolver. Or even a .25 mini-revolver. I thought it would beat .22LR. Not anymore, not after this video. I still don't think it's worse than a .22. The numbers are better and other gel tests aren't this bad. But why pay so much more for expensive, rare boutique ammo if it's not reliably better and sometimes worse? .22 is comparable and premium rounds like Punch are reliable, so centerfire reliability isn't a major factor. And then stepping up to .32 ACP doubles the energy of the cartridge. In ultralight revolvers, .32 Long and .32 H&R work, too. And now there's the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 .380 which makes almost every other pocket pistol look obsolete, since there's finally a small and light .380 pistol that's not hard to shoot. And .380 has about four times the energy of a .25. This was a great test to demonstrate that .25 ACP sucks and why .25 pistols are no longer being manufactured. This cleared me of illusions that it was underrated and had a bad reputation only due to older lower-velocity FMJs that underpenetrated. Looks like even the best, most high-velocity .25 can severely underpenetrate, at least sometimes. Thanks, Tools.
Appreciate ya. I suspect the low penetration was in part due to the tumbling. Which, in the guns most people have to run this stuff from, is highly likely to happen. Even then, if this stuff hit a bone with this low energy, there is zero chance it's going through.

It's a cool round if you like different stuff but sure isn't something I'm gonna count on.😆
@@kerino1 Grab one of their cheap .22's they are fairly reliable and fun to shoot cheap ammo, and probably more effective if you had to use it for SD.
@@wymonwatson1309 Definitely would go w/ 22lr before 25 after seeing today's test. Thanks for the suggestion.
Watch that recoil with those wrist breakers bruh. /s Nice review as always.

When using a tiny mouse gun like a .25 ACP, as Paul Harrell (RIP) used to say, you have to aim for the right part of the target.
Definitely the squishy parts.
Very high on the chest to the top of the neck. And / or contact shots, which the Beretta Jetfire & Bobcats are capable of.
Optimally, you aim for the right places regardless of the caliber.
Yeah, I probably should do that. The .22lr Punch will absolutely embarrass the .25acp in every way. Not even a question.
@@ToolsandTargets why? Isnt 22 weaker?
@@diogenesstudent5585it most definitely is in the same size gun, 22lr doesn't have the penetration no matter what this dweeb says.
@@vgnlda .22lr Punch is specifically designed for short barrel defensive use.
Exactly
Which, really, for civilian carry, means it's not very useful at all. If it won't reliably stop somebody who is trying to hurt you, then it's just pocket weight.
It would need precise shot placement .
Either eye socket or ear canal .
Years ago on COPS a guy killed someone with a 25 to the heart.
I felt that “Aw, that didn’t help nuttin”….I say the same thing every Thursday night when I see my paycheck deposit
🤣
Man, you're genuinely better off with a 22lr at this point. Not for me.
Agreed. At least it's cheaper.
Yep
LCP 22 with spring up grade has been great edc for summer.
.22 lr out of the same barrel length is weaker and rimfire, so not reliable
@@lardomcfarty9866 CCI 22LR out of LCP22 will penetrate one side of steel drum and heavily dent the backside at 30 yards. The 25acp won't even penetrate the front side in same test, I've tried. I'll stick to 22LR aguila and CCI, though aguila does have a bit too much wax coat, but no failures in NAA pug, tx22 compact, LCP22, 10/22, or keltec p17.
I would use a 22 lr or 22mag first. Thanks for the test Brian. It reminds me why I Don't own a 25 acp
@rangetime6779 the energy may be the same but the 22lr punch will outpenetrate the 25 ACP by a significant margin.
Yes the barrel here is to bad and didnt stabilize the bullet. "All Outdors" tested the same ammo from a beretta and gut 14-18 inches of penetration.
@@Gieszkanne yeah this dude is ridiculous he shouldn't even be on TH-cam
A friend has a 1948 vintage Astra Hammerless .25acp.

Approximately thirty years ago, I knew a very large man that was a bar owner. He got into a fight with another man and the opponent completed emptied a .25 pistol into his chest. He still went over and beat the guy to a pulp before going to the hospital. No joke.
I don't doubt it one bit.
And yet there are stories of people going down with one hit from a 25acp.

I bought a .25 Deringer. It it one minute-of-barn accurate. We use it on camping trips. Last one to hit a tin can does dishes. Great fun!

The 'dead round' review lol - still entertaining and informative and I am sure there are some folks out there with heirloom pistols. Thanks!
I traded the last 25acp i had for a good pocket knife when i was about 16. I realized the knife was more dependable and more deadly😅
Thanks !

Thanks for the video. I had a Jennings 25 many years ago. About 40. It was bad.

So this is what can be expected in "the real world."
used to have an FIE Titan, I always used plain ole FMJ cuz when it comes to baby calibers penetration matters more than any potential expansion

Col. Jeff Cooper USMC Ret. once said that if he was shot with a 25acp. and found out he would be mad as hell.
the last time i saw a gun that small in a caliber i'd like was the 32 North American Auto round. i think it was just a tad heavier like 40 grains but out of a little NAA pistol it would go a respectable 12-1400 feet per second so a little hotter on weight and speed than a 22 out of a rifle.
It's a low load for sure but try to Golddot load to get a bit of light load bearing.

That was a good test. I had a cousin who was killed by two shots to the chest at almost point blank distance. He had his killer in a headlock and the killer managed to reach his pistol and shot my late cousin. He probably got his aorta or some other large vessel perforated.

(And new ammo)
I've yet to find a pocket gun i like more that is small enough im willing to carry it.
Lorcin's are known for their superior craftmanship and dependably. Given a choice between a Lorcin and two rocks, I'll take the rocks.
😂
Compare it to a 22lr Ruger LCP. That would actually be an interesting comparison.
🤔
Loaded with Punch, it's an easy win.
Not sure I could hit the gel with that thing.!
Great test.!!
