I actually bought it for the 3AAA battery configuration.They are more readily available and with the 3 it makes the tube 1" which is a standard diameter for mounting systems. There are not very many decent quality LED flashlights that are 1" tube using AAA's.With the limited market of this configuration it was a good move as the majority of the public doesn't even know CR123 batteries exist which is dominating the 1" tube LED market but makes it easier to buy a more universally accepted battery.
You skip to mention the best feature of this flashlight, by twisting your wrist while holding the on button it will dim and stay in that mode until is turned off, very useful when working in close distance and you don't need that much intensity.
To add, it has a memory mode and will be on that brightness level next time you turn it on. Same is for 2 clicks, strobe may be set on various speed, from fast to blinking. This is still my favourite flashlight

Hi, not sure if I am right, but I am quite sure the low mode (3 clicks) is actually the sleep mode. If you leave it for awhile, it will go to sleep and if you nudge it, it will come on. Useful when you want light quickly without having to fumble with the switch. I think you can hold the button and rotate for each mode to vary the brightness or speed of strobe. You should try it out. Might very well work!
One thing you forgot in your video!... is the manual dimming feature built in the button, and that you can control how bright or low the output, strobe speed and SOS speed... I like the tale cap technology, so I use it on my XL50 Maglight.

Thanks for the reply. After doing a little more research, the E21 seems to big for an EDC. XL200 is smaller, but still seems a tad too big. Might wind up getting a Quark mini AA as the EDC. Just a few bucks more, and more compact in size. Looking forward to your next vid, take care.
Isn't it 3 AAA batteries equal to 4.5v compared to 2 AA batteries giving only 3v. That makes the differences in the light output of the LEDs. That is why they needed to use 3 AAA batteries.
You've missed the point with this review. You say maglite should make it with 2AA batteries so it would be thinner and longer, but the features wouldn't be able to fit into it. The switch on the back is a practical size but making it thinner wouldn't allow that size switch so it would have to be smaller and not practical. Then the electronic features probably not be available. Nearly all flashlights with those type of features are of similar size and thickness. You criticise mode three which is the dimming feature but you are reviewing it all wrong. It is a night light. You turn it on with 3 clicks then place it down, whether on a bedside table or in a tent etc. then it dims right down and gives a very low night light which lasts for up to 218 hours. If for some reason you need to quickly use the flashlight then as soon as you move it or pick it up it automatically goes to full brightness so you have instant light. There is a dimming feature on it to give a beam of anywhere between about 20 lumens to the full 172 lumens. With the flashlight off, press the switch once and hold it down. Then rotate the flashlight clockwise or anti-clockwise, slowly and the beam will get dimmer. As soon as you stop rotating the beam will stay at that chosen brightness until you adjust it again or remove the batteries. It's great for when you only need a small amount of light and extends battery life considerably

People keep mentioning this about the voltage. Yes, 3 AAA batteries run at 4.5 volts which is higher voltage then 2 AA at 3.0 volts. If this was a direct drive light, then the initial brightness would be brighter with the 3 AAA configuration. BUT this is NOT the case with this light. The light has a driver. Put more amps to the bulb and you will get a brighter light, regardless of the "voltage". AA batteries can be driven harder and maintain battery life much much longer then AAA batteries. Its a fact.

2 AAs may have a higher mAh capacity than the 3 AAAs but you won't get as bright a light. The brightness of the LED has absolutely nothing to do with the mAh capacity of the battery, it depends on the voltage. 4.5V will create a much brighter LED light than a 3V. I guess if you want a longer run time, then a 2AA setup would work better.

The presenter has missed some of the most innovative features of this device. For example, if you keep the button depressed and rotate your wrist, the torch will dim or brighten with your movement. Also, whilst in strobe mode, again keep the button depressed and the strobe frequency will increase or decrease. Not a bad try, but a little more investigation of the product your reviewing is required.
Chiming in, I'm an aviator, and one of the things I look for in a flashlight is the ability to change the batteries in the dark while flying an airplane that does not have an autopilot. Because I might have to do just that. Airlines must carry a flashlight powered by 2 D cells for that reason. I find a 2 AA mini maglite with a red lens sufficient for my cockpit. These 3 AAA battery holders have been cropping up for awhile, and they're ok on the ground but they don't fly with me.
I know it’s an old comment lol but the xl50 only has three beam setting and the xl200 has five. Xl50 is only high, low and strobe. I think it’s also 30 lumens less bright
The complaint about the use of 3 AAA vs 2 AA batteries, not only ignores voltage requirements, but it would screw up other design aspects of the flashlight. If Maglite went with a thinner AA flashlight, there won't be enough room on the back for the silkscreen of the different modes, and the light would be smaller in diameter and taller, making it rather unstable for tail standing... And my experience with 2 AA vs 3 AAA flashlights, is that despite the 2 AA batteries being bigger and with more capacity, they eat through batteries a lot faster than 3 AAA lights. So perhaps the LED has to be driven with a lot more juice to make up for the wimpy voltage of 2 AA's. So I'd say that Maglite did the right thing. 3 AAA's in a canister that inserts into the flashlight is pretty common practice in the flashlight industry.
agreed, and the big reason I like this range is the form factor. these xl series lights are easily carried in the pocket of a pair of jeans in a way that a 2AA torch just isn't. and it feels much nicer in the hand (giggity).
its a night light not a dim mode.....use it in your tent or whatever and set it down and the light dims. then just pick it up and you get instant light.

If you want an extremly bright flashlight, get a Surefire. If you want a light almost as bright for about $160 less, get a Mag-lite xl-200. The Surefire cr123a batteries are expensive and hard to find. The Maglite's aaa batteries are cheap and redily avaliable.
Good review, but you mode you were referencing as "Low" is the "Nite Lite"; not the low. The low is achieved by clicking down once, and twisting your hand to adjust the brightness (all the way down to 14 lumens). :-) The high and low are contained in the same mode. God bless.
It’s obvious you didn’t read the instructions of the light as you didn’t demonstrate the variable output mode and you were using the nite stand mode wondering why it dims down and finding it useless/annoying when searching. That’s not what that mode is for. It’s for a nite stand when getting up to do something briefly. It’s disappointing that you wouldn’t research prior to posting such a review.
@ykliu1995 That is dependent on how it is wired. One way is for voltage, the other will maintain the 1.5 volts for a longer period by increasing the MaH.
They need to make it 500 lumens. Even the Chinese Duracell flashlights at Costco hit that mark. I still buy Maglites because I like the Made in USA aspect, but still.

Looks like a nice light. I didn't care about SOS etc, and chose the XL50. Basic functions only. Presses are 1=bright 2=low 3=strobe. I've heard the XL50 does better at long range. Don't really know. The market used to be filled with nothing but cheep crappy flashlights until Maglight came along. Then they started to make a high dollar better than crappy light.. Now that there is some competition out there Maglight has had to start making a better light or go broke and I think that they have dun it. I bought 2 of these flashlights a couple years ago and I regret it. They are both paperweights. I really loved the features of this thing but they both have the same problem. They drain batteries while they are turned off. The infrastructure around here sucks balls and so when a butterfly 5 miles away lands on a power line....the power goes out; I go to use my awesome xl200 and nothing....no juice....wtf? Batteries will die in just a matter of days while this thing is turned off. So pissed. Maglite customer service is AWFUL. They want me to pay shipping costs to return their faulty piece of shit and get it repaired. And the reviews of that process are awful as well. Apparently they will just blame it on the batteries and tell me to get fucked. This flashlight is a potentially very expensive piece of shit. Will never buy maglite again.
I have to agree, nice clever little torch, but no good as a standby torch because of the drain while off issue - worse still, many batteries leak when drained, so you end up with corrosion inside the torch and the battery carrier.
lights now a days are 1000lumen as a common thing - at least 500 and the high K tint is out now... no purple lights anymore - the 5000k is the sweet spot - pure neutral white - if you can get 1000lumen white light that lasts a long time on 1 battery for like $10 or $20, how is the maglite relevant?
alphavortex1 Anyone can go on and on about lumens. Is 1000+ lumens cool and useful in certain cases? Yeah I agree it is. However MagLites are and always have been USA made, have all the output that you would need for regular every day (or night) uses. You can club someone over the head with a C or D cell version, batteries for them are cheap, the flashlight itself is priced well, and they all have a full lifetime warrenty. I have a Fenix PD35 that I dont really like to carry anymore because it sucks through batteries and I never REALLY have a need for anything over 300 lumens or so. MagLite flashlights in my opinion is still the best all around flashlight anyone can buy.
+Old_Ford_Trucks-FF#147 you could go on and on about lumens because that is the #1 point about a light, how bright it is. You can have a 3800lumen light that will run at a few lumens for a month - you can't do that with a maglight. Lithium batteries last MUCH longer than any alkaline. If you don't use the proper battery for your PD35, it will suck sure :) But get a real battery a Fenix 3500mAh and run it at 300lumen - maglite can't touch it. Maybe you don't like the beam pattern. (throw or flood or mix) I know you like em - all American light. I use to love them - but honestly, they are really irrelevant today in every way - if you want to bash someone with the light - get a Convoy L6 for $60 - try it and see if you use a maglite again.

alphavortex1 Anyone can go on and on about lumens. Is 1000+ lumens cool and useful in certain cases? Yeah I agree it is. However MagLites are and always have been USA made, have all the output that you would need for regular every day (or night) uses. You can club someone over the head with a C or D cell version, batteries for them are cheap, the flashlight itself is priced well, and they all have a full lifetime warrenty. I have a Fenix PD35 that I dont really like to carry anymore because it sucks through batteries and I never REALLY have a need for anything over 300 lumens or so. MagLite flashlights in my opinion is still the best all around flashlight anyone can buy.
+Old_Ford_Trucks-FF#147 you could go on and on about lumens because that is the #1 point about a light, how bright it is. You can have a 3800lumen light that will run at a few lumens for a month - you can't do that with a maglight. Lithium batteries last MUCH longer than any alkaline. If you don't use the proper battery for your PD35, it will suck sure :) But get a real battery a Fenix 3500mAh and run it at 300lumen - maglite can't touch it. Maybe you don't like the beam pattern. (throw or flood or mix) I know you like em - all American light. I use to love them - but honestly, they are really irrelevant today in every way - if you want to bash someone with the light - get a Convoy L6 for $60 - try it and see if you use a maglite again.
alphavortex1 I suppose it all boils down to personal opinion. I will buy and use MagLite and you can stick to whoever you like best. I have stated my points and I really dont feel any need to argue over it :P
