Very interesting. Ive used the same mag for work nearly everyday for 6 years. Its been with me in the rain, snow, ice, under car hoods, moldy basements, off roading, and years of night fishing. At the end of the day it stands next to my late father's maglite from the mid 80s which still works. He himself used for 10 years as local PD until his passing.
I started using 2xAA Mini Maglite about 20 years ago, and since then I have not used any other brand of flashlight. Its a engineering marvel, a must have for every technician.
4:43 In 1981 I was working as an engineer and had access to a machine shop. When I noticed the tail cap was larger than the bulb, I milled out a space and put a spare bulb in the hole. I subsequently had to send in one of my Mags for a different reason. So I sent them a letter with the light, because I wanted to make sure I got MY tail cap back and I suggested they make them that way. They gave me no acknowledgement and took the idea. Yes, the tailcap spare bulb was MY IDEA. I’d love to get some credit...
My Daddy bought me my first Maglite back around 1981ish. That same light rode with me in my Patrol car for almost 3 decades. I still have it and it rests beside my recliner just in arms reach. Do they stand the test of time? You bet! Excellent product. Thumbs up video 👍🏻 ~John
I have several mini maglights all around the house, including the new brighter led. Also a two cell "C cell" as well as a 4 "D" cell that I bought 30 (?) years ago. All still work great! Love these!
Mag Lights used to be the best. Lately, I've had several Mag Lights fail for no apparent reason when almost new. I guess the Mag light management decided the primary use was as a head knocker.
Iv been to the headquarters in Ontario, you can purchase there to, they do free repairs, or u can trade in an old one for half price on the new led lights. :) they also have rechargeable one to.
i have 3 of the mini mags; 1 in my shop, 1 in my truck (along with a 2 d-cell version), and 1 in my bedroom. two of them are the led version but one is the older, incandescent style. it still gives off good light and i've had to change the batteries only once in about 2 decades.
Andrew Stark My mom told me to get one because she said they were really durable. Her reasoning behind why she thought they were durable is because she got wacked in the head with one during some riot in NYC in the 90s.
World's best? Hardly. There are much better flashlights on the market. Maglites are good, and they're cheap and readily available, but they're not the best by any stretch.
I have the mini maglite, the 3 d cell mag, and the 6 d cell mag....love them all....I converted the 3 and 6 d cell mags to led and replace plastic lens with glass. I also replaced end cap with a glass breaker cap.

I got my first ever Mini Maglite AA through an offer in Handgunner Magazine, it was the best torch I had ever seen, used or owned! I now run a Mini Maglite AA with an optically pure, ground glass lens, a 120 Lumens LED conversion, lithium batteries and an ESD (Emergency Safety Devices) Glass Breaker Tail Cap. It lives in an open top belt holster, always available when needed. A Photon Freedom Micro Light Covert Nose model, necklace worn, provides useful, less bright light as required. Maglite forever changed the world of personal torches (flashlights).

I like my Mini Maglite LED Pro +. Decent output, cool gravity / g-force based mode switch, improved heat sinking, power management circuitry seems to work well even with NiMH. Also fixed the dark spot problem in the flood center on its INTENDED full flood mode (head unscrewed as little as possible to turn on). Not bad, Maglite! (Also am pleased with the ML300LX)
I love Magnate's. Excellent build quality and made in America, what's better than that? I own several but recently I bought the 2 C-cell LED model for my job (ML25). I am a truck driver and that model works great for me. Small enough to fit in my pocket yet powerful enough to do my pre and post trip inspections. Resistant to the elements and durable enough to hold up to abuse. Probably the best model for people in my line of work.

I also have been a huge mag light fan but they are not nearly as bright as some of their competitors. Maybe they have been upgraded, if not they are due. I hope they get back to the best flashlight in the world.
they have been upgraded. check out the ML50L 2-Cell/3-Cell. i haven't had the need for a new flashlight for awhile. I recently bought a ML50L 2-Cell LED, all I can say is WOW! Improved way beyond the older models.

For years I only bought Mag Lights. I'm a field service technician (self-employed). My 2AA Mini-Mags started having an issue with flicker. Flickering is very annoying when I'm trying to see inside dark machines. I had to bang on them to get them to stay on. Replacing batteries did not help. Replacing the lamp did not help. Cleaning contacts helped for a short time. Eventually, I gave up. The Mini-Mags went in the trash. I still have the 3D Mag Lights and they're working fine. They have been upgraded to LEDs. They never flicker. For my field service tool bag I now use a flashlight from "O-Light". It's very bright (1000 lumens) and absolutely NO FLICKER! To be fair, the rechargeable O-Light is a lot more expensive. I paid about $80 for it - online. To me it's worth it to avoid that nasty flicker.
I've had the same experience with Mini Mag Lights. I'm an industrial mechanic. I like the Streamlight 2xAAA light. It's always in my shirt pocket and gives good light in tight places.
I also have a couple of mini mags led that have issues of flickering. They dont always have a constant beam of light. I gotta bang them in order to have a staeady light. I believe it has something to do with the head for turning it on. Thats why the bigger mags with a side switch dont have that problem.
@@lefthandedtriggerfinger2443 Give me a break. I'm an industrial mechanic. My Mini Maglight let me down when I really needed it. I did everything I could to make it go . My co worker's Mini Maglight had the same problem.

Got one when I was very young and another one a year later. Recently put the smaller one on my keyring, battery leaked but it still worked for a while. Now I have a new LED solitaire... Still an amazing product.
mag is the world's best flashlight rugged and a unmatched warranty those folks really care about thier customer service I never had any problems with them under industrial use 24/7 when ever I have a issue they fix it free no questions asked
Fast forward to 2018 and we find after-market accessories (adaptor) that turn your Maglites into super-bright LED versions. Alas, the batteries will not last very long, but for those who have an emotional attachment to a particular flashlight, their old friend gets a new lease on life.
Fenix lights will blow your Maglite out of the water with 1000 lumens+ and large 21700 rechargeable batteries so you wont have to but new batteries all the time
Good Product. I have a couple Maglite's that I've had for close to 30 years. I've replaced the lens and the rubber seal over the buttons several times do to normal wear and abuse, but they still work like the day I bought them.
I have a mini mag light when i was a hospitall porter i took it to the wards with me used it many times . now about 15 years old still going strong. and still in boxed condition .
Have the original xenon bulb in mine for 20 years still works. Add the spare bulb in the cap plus the extras that come with the packaging and it's a lifetimes worth.
Maglite was a game changer when it came out, but technical advancement has left them behind. Other brands are brighter, smaller, more rugged, and water resistant. I wish Maglite would come out with a 2.0 version with better designed reflector, higher performance LED, and better moisture/water sealing. I own 3 Maglites that I bought years ago. Over the past 10 years I have purchased several newer flashlights and none of them have been Maglites. I do like Maglite, but the need to catch up with the competition.
@@ace_of_fives2744 I have three maglites and like them, even though they are obsolete. I also have several streamlight products, and have been impressed with the quality and performance. They use CREE LEDs, which are very bright and durable. The reflectors give good light coverage (hot spot in the middle with lower intensity surround). Some streamlights use alkali batteries, others use lithium, and some can use both. The only thing I don't like about streamlight is that some of their products are made in china. If that matters to you, check the product details on their website. Surefire is also a maker of high quality/performance flashlights. I think most, if not all of their products are made in the US.
I wouldn't call it technical advancement in a sense Modern flashlights keep getting worse *and worse* battery life because of their obsession with tiny batteries(laws of physics: low capacity) and their mistreatment of lumen count as a gimmick without proper cooling It's really dumb when something that runs on 3AAs or 4AAAs is only rated for 20 minutes of runtime
Maglites are soulful, that's why I having 'em hanging on my kitchen's wall. No suitable holster for my ML25LT but I've made a simple one using a couple of cable-ties.
I admire the quality of every MAGLITE product very much. MAGLITE torch has great anodized Aluminium body and good, strong and heavy bezel that’s common to all Battery configurations, which can be also used against dangerous perpetrators, a weapon so as to say. The bezel needs to be rotated numerous time to remove from the body, until one’s patience comes to a stand still. Good plastic plain lens, that can easily be scratch and cracked. Fantastic tail cap and spring and a spare incandescent bulb encased in sponge inside it. Wonderful engineering, even though enormously; an overkill. It has an ON/OFF switch. Strange switch, which has about 20 plus minute parts. The positive supply to the incandescent bulb is through a high tension steel spring, which also assists focusing the output and also reduce current. It doesn’t matter or does it? One needs to obtain greater education (preferably a PhD) to disassemble the switch assembly, as it’s quite intricate and difficult to dislodge the nice switch. The question is to use or not to use a 6mm Allen key or TORX... but it’s a great design. To release the TORX fastner, from the switch, one needs TORX key which is not available, for that one MUST buy the whole switch! from the company costing about $14 plus tax plus postage. It’s a nice arrangement. (The MAGLITE TORX key is a proprietary design with a slender stalk which goes through the switch hole, which is not available in the market !) The output..... err the output from MAGLITE... is not as one’d desire from the greatly designed product. May be, way back ancient times, such illumination would have been satisfactorily sufficient. But MAGLITE is a great product that can be modified greatly by incorporating many products to enhance the Torch (flashlight) Proudly, I possess about 8 MAGLITEs of different configurations. Even, a lovely and heavily modified 1 Cell* MAGLITE that has a 1000 Lumens LED emitter, powered by LGGBMEOT2170* Li-Ion Battery. The result is many fold brighter throw (output) than a 6D MAGLITE Torch. *21700 Battery is the newly designed Li-Ion battery used in newer models of Battery Cars. Recently MAGLITE, realizing that it needs to upgrade the great product, came up with nice low level LED emitters. Nice. But, still far behind the other similar products in the market. To conclude, MAGLITE is a great product. I like it, because it can be modified to suit my ambition, desire and requirement. Thank you MAGLITE inverters and manufacturers. MAGLITE is a great American product to be proud of.
I love maglites, have a round 30 or so, even buy non working ones, they can usually be stripped, cleaned and working again in a matter of minutes. If they are too far gone(very rare), they get broken for parts.
Haven't had one for a long time. I think it's one of the best flashlights, but I prefer a headlamp and some super small flashlight combo. A headlamp is just so much handier, and if you need to check light in some weird place, small LED will do just fine. You can have one in your keychain for example.
You should look at a Fenix light if you work in emergency services as they make high quality flashlights that are reliable, compact, durable, powerful and with long runtimes
I live right up the street from the Ontario plant. I own a 4d baton mag and the must have a blue mini mag 2 AA just like the one in the video. Both incandescent. I like the warmth and color. I’m old skool
Well, there will be many flashlight options on the market, but Maglite is like the king of style and functionality, although it took a while to get to LED technology and they have not yet released inspection versions or with an orange peel diffuser for have an even light pattern, I think Maglite makes its products with a lot of quality, and they have a very beautiful design that to date continues to fall in love, although in its latest versions they already use very powerful LEDs, they still need to offer a solution in batteries that is already coming factory, as a rechargeable lithium battery pack and that can continue to use the battery format of a lifetime or something like that.
Great light sticks! Don’t leave your batteries in them if your not going to use the light for awhile as batteries corrode and you can’t get the batteries out.. I like the new led mags but now the mags have more competition.
I'm lucky enough to own a very early 1979/80 3 D-cell 'variebeam' Maglite, from way back when the patents were still pending! Still going strong, and upgraded with an LED bulb and glass lens. The only scars it carries, is internal corrosion from a leaking battery, but still works great!
Excellent flashlight. I have several different sizes. I read the manual that says to rub a little vaseline on the threads for even more corrosion resistance. I just wish the L.E.D. conversion kits were cheaper. They make a maglite almost perfect.
My favourite feature of my Maglite is that is great at denting skulls. Normally only one full swing is required but occasionally an additional whack seals the deal. I love the sound of the crunch as it contacts the cranium. It's almost addictive. Definately not a mini-Maglite fan. Prefer the D cell size.
It's great to see this documentary in 2022 when rechargeable LED flashlights are now all the rage. Maglights are still in production (with LEDs) but they will have to up their game to remain competitive and attractive in today's market place.
I've had one under the seat of my truck for 8 years and the thing probably still Works! I sold the truck it was in. It was dim from the battery's being low but I only changed the battery's once in 8 years. I only used it on occasion though and had it there under the seat for protection aswell. It weighed probably 6 pounds or more! If you wacked someone with it they would be hurtin!
I stick with maglite. Ive tried other brand's and they failed my expectations. so I went back to maglite they are very reliable and been around for a long time. Best flashligts made!
Great build quality on MagLite but light output is weak compared to led lenser I have both MagLite and Led Lenser both built to high standards but MagLite are trading on past reputation and the fact they was once a Front runner. I will say the Led Lenser did cost about 3 times as much and uses 4 AAA batteries as Apposed to 2 AA batteries.
I got a big LED one and within a month the switch started tweaking because I used it when washing out trailers so it was exposed to a lot of mist. So yeah the waterproofing is not great, the seals keep the big stuff out
I have about 11 different sizes and colors.I also keep the 6 D cell for burglers or you know.....just in case.I converted all mine to led lamp with kits off ebay.
Darin Clegg I think they are very water resistant! You could run around in the rain, you could drop your torch in a wet area etc etc But, maybe you would not go swimming with it lol. I have a mini version, and a large version, and going out in extreme weather is not a problem for either.

Loved my 6 cell maglight as a kid back in the 80's and 90's. I fear there are better torches now. I still have a love for them all the same.
MM0SDK They make LED retrofit bulbs for them.
mag is the world's best flashlight rugged and a unmatched warranty those folks really care about thier customer service I never had any problems with them under industrial use 24/7 when ever I have a issue they fix it free no questions asked
" sir, we can't fulfill this warranty claim. There is way to much blood/hair/skin on the knurling of the flashlight" lol
I used two big ones with high intensity halogen bulbs exploring the lava tube caves of Iceland.
Fast forward to 2018 and we find after-market accessories (adaptor) that turn your Maglites into super-bright LED versions. Alas, the batteries will not last very long, but for those who have an emotional attachment to a particular flashlight, their old friend gets a new lease on life.
namzarf Fenix, Olight, etc are where it’s at.
Simple and cheap mods bring it back upto date and with the battery adapters and conversions available, run time is vastly improved.
Fenix lights will blow your Maglite out of the water with 1000 lumens+ and large 21700 rechargeable batteries so you wont have to but new batteries all the time
I love mag lites
Made in USA
Not plastic
Led bright
Last years
Only has one mode
They have plastic lenses...
Best flashlight 🔦 period. You buy it for life. You get what you pay for. It works always, when you need it most!
John P what flashlight would you recommend that is brighter, smaller, more rugged, and more water resistant than a maglite?
I wouldn't call it technical advancement in a sense
Modern flashlights keep getting worse *and worse* battery life because of their obsession with tiny batteries(laws of physics: low capacity) and their mistreatment of lumen count as a gimmick without proper cooling
It's really dumb when something that runs on 3AAs or 4AAAs is only rated for 20 minutes of runtime
New Maglights do 1K lumen now and you still get the iconic made in the US designed/built product. They are solid choice and built like tanks.
love my MagLite !i got 3 of them for years!!
The last statement is really incredible and true. I love this light.
Revolutionary for their time.
I'm seriously considering getting a MAGLITE. If it's designed to last for a very long time, I'll totally buy one.
Maglites are soulful, that's why I having 'em hanging on my kitchen's wall. No suitable holster for my ML25LT but I've made a simple one using a couple of cable-ties.
I admire the quality of every MAGLITE product very much. MAGLITE torch has great anodized Aluminium body and good, strong and heavy bezel that’s common to all Battery configurations,
which can be also used against dangerous perpetrators, a weapon so as to say.
(The MAGLITE TORX key is a proprietary design with a slender stalk which goes through the switch hole, which is not available in the market !)
The output..... err the output from MAGLITE... is not as one’d desire from the greatly designed product. May be, way back ancient times, such illumination would have been satisfactorily sufficient.
But MAGLITE is a great product that can be modified greatly by incorporating many products to enhance the Torch (flashlight)
Proudly, I possess about 8 MAGLITEs of different configurations. Even, a lovely and heavily modified 1 Cell* MAGLITE that has a 1000 Lumens LED emitter, powered by LGGBMEOT2170*
Li-Ion Battery.
Maglite flashlight has the sexiest feeling in the hands smooth on the hands there light is bright not compete to LED lenser
I've still got my 3 D cell ... in black from 1982 and it still works
Ask any 1% outlaw biker why they prefer the 4 D cell Maglite when riding in the day and/or night... A legal carry tool for a variety of situations.
I recently learned that batons and clubs were illegal where I lived, so I got a Maglite ;)
20 lumens bright ! amazin
Very interesting video, i have just converted my 25 yo 2 x AA Maglite to a LED bulb, and i am amazed how much brighter it is now 👍 Au
love my large flash allows me to defend myself against troublemakers.
A weak Maglite wont help you, Get a high power Fenix light instead
Rodney King approves this product
I love maglites, have a round 30 or so, even buy non working ones, they can usually be stripped, cleaned and working again in a matter of minutes. If they are too far gone(very rare), they get broken for parts.
Haven't had one for a long time. I think it's one of the best flashlights, but I prefer a headlamp and some super small flashlight combo. A headlamp is just so much handier, and if you need to check light in some weird place, small LED will do just fine. You can have one in your keychain for example.
Used my own money to buy when i worked for British Police and again when i went to Ambulance service! Top Quality.
They make a maglite almost perfect.
use silicone, not oil based product. oil eats the o ring.
New ones do 1000 lumen, have different program modes, use standard D cells, 50 lumens is already plenty.

Help me to change Batteries. End plug was stuck. Maybe Old Battery Liquid made it stuck. Any good idea ?
Great Flashlight Made in America
I stick with maglite. Ive tried other brand's and they failed my expectations. so I went back to maglite they are very reliable and been around for a long time. Best flashligts made!
Great build quality on MagLite but light output is weak compared to led lenser I have both MagLite and Led Lenser both built to high standards but MagLite are trading on past reputation and the fact they was once a Front runner. I will say the Led Lenser did cost about 3 times as much and uses 4 AAA batteries as Apposed to 2 AA batteries.
Have you tried Fenix lights?
@@calivapor1701 haha what do you mean with simply "No"
thats the first ive heard about a spare bulb- nice
They should’ve done a segment on the 3D maglite which was actually the first maglite. The mini maglite came along later not first
how can i get it from Bangladesh?
Definitely nice when they work. Unfortunately I left the batteries in the mini mag. The mini mag no longer works. 😞
I got a big LED one and within a month the switch started tweaking because I used it when washing out trailers so it was exposed to a lot of mist. So yeah the waterproofing is not great, the seals keep the big stuff out
American Iconic made in the USA flash light maglite™
Every mag light I’ve ever owned has stopped working...
Bought two from walmart before a camping trip two years ago. Both stopped working over that weekend.
Pat Pikulski
Same here, especially the mini AAs.
Bought mine 5 years ago and works like it did yesterday
@@ShakespeareCafe Can relate, been unable to fix it
I love my olight M2T though
Have one for 30 year 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Can we change the battery on this light?
Yes i may change the battery on these sort of light
I have about 11 different sizes and colors.I also keep the 6 D cell for burglers or you know.....just in case.I converted all mine to led lamp with kits off ebay.
I have 2 that are 25 years old or so, still work but now converting to led
i got a blue one yesterday. im just trying to find out if they r water proof
Let us know, Darin!
Darin Clegg
I think they are very water resistant!
You could run around in the rain, you could drop your torch in a wet area etc etc
But, maybe you would not go swimming with it lol.
I have a mini version, and a large version, and going out in extreme weather is not a problem for either.
Green eel eehhh not really i dropped mine in the pool to test and it quit working after a few minutes. they are water resistant, not water proof.
Darin Clegg
did you not read my comment properly?
That is strange. I have used my 1999 AA Maglite underwater and there has not been a single issue whatsoever. Works like a charm.
Buondi . Volevo sapere se ancora avete in commercio maglite micro . Grazie .
Diamond knurling is for grip idk how he doesn't think its there for a grip. Do barbells just having knurling for beauty reason?
What a fabulous story, facility in Ontario, CA (not the cheapest place), and channel - new subscriber!
'
what country made this maglite...
LED or lightbulb
Good idea to take one of these in your emergency kit, just don't be surprized if the batteries have leaked after 6 months to a year...
If long time battery forget in side no way to take out due to lamp side is sealed not threaded
i love my Maglites
Tenho orgulho de ter lanternas Mag Lite boas,úteis e duráveis. Made in U.S.A 🇺🇸
Ich liebe Maglite.meine Nummer 1
I just got the big long one, the one that I was told American police would use as a night stick.
Imam taku lampu ali mi je neapravna,a hteo bih da je popravim, kako i gde?
"Rugged." I've never seen a mini maglite not get destroyed after a drop

The first strand type flashlight!
I need it. How much price in pakistan. And where it availe in pakistan
They missed the boat on LED lights, and are now playing catchup...
I love em!
