  • Everyone knows that Noel & Liam Gallagher are heavily influenced by The Beatles. But what exactly is it about Oasis's music that makes it sound so 'Beatle-ish'?
And an extra special thanks goes to Daniel Long & Paul Peijzel, the channel’s Patreon saints! 😇

He's right though, it's The Masterplan's chorus that has excactly same structure to Whatever's main riff. U 'll notice it if your playing Whatever's chords and start singin "Dance if you wanna dance.. etc." to it. It'll work.

Zak also drummed for The Who. Oasis' music is less varied than The Beatles and sounds very similar as Noel's High Flying Birds, The Beatles sound evolved a lot and they were much more creative musically and fashion wise, they also had better voices, Liam's sounded shot last time I heard him sing or try to. If they were so similar to the Beatles as many claim like this video, I'd like their music much more than I do, their songs were influenced by other 60's and 70's bands like The Kinks and Slade that's what BritPop was all about and was clearly started by Suede not Oasis. Oasis, Pulp, Shed Seven, Cast, Blur, they all had some good songs and hits, Oasis triumphed more in sales but they are clearly over-rated and have been overhyped by the media.

I´m a Beatles fan and I love Oasis.
Anyway, a lot of fans of The Beatles despised and some still despise Oasis because of that big lie of "Oasis is a copy of The Beatles"
The excuse ? It´s always the same: the intro of Don´t Look Back In Anger.
Oasis put in their melodies some "touches" of Lennon&McCartney melodies, but they always had their OWN SOUND.
If somebody is going to listen to Oasis for the first time thinking he´ll listen to a "new version of The Beatles" he´ll get a big surprise when he listens to Definitely Maybe.
I don´t understand why a lot of people put Oasis in an underrated place because they think "they copied or stole from The Beatles" when that´s not true.
Those of us that belong to the Oasis generation, saw them live and bought their records, know very well it was not like that.
Some tribute to The Beatles in some lyrics ? Maybe.
    Some arrangements ? Maybe.
But Oasis WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE OASIS, they were not at all a copy of The Beatles.

One thing I missed in your explanation was the use of cadences. For example, for lack of a better term, I call it “sharpening the dominant chord”. For example, if a song is in C Major, a normal cadence would be F>G>C, but Beatles would sometimes go F>G#>C. Another example exists, which I’ll call “Majoring the Dominant-Parallel”. If the song is in C Major, the dominant parallel would be E Minor, but the Beatles would play it as E major. Eg C>E>F>G>C (all major). These cadences can be heart often in oasis music also.

To me, the most obvious influences of Oasis are:
    Stone Roses
    Beatles
    SLADE
    Sex Pistols
    Neil Young
    La's
    Stones
    T-Rex
And then you can see things of great musicians here and there, from electronica, from soul music, from punk, folk or whatever they were listening in that moment but the core of their music is inspired, in my opinion, by these musicians and made in their very own way.
The influence of the Beatles is huge but it's not the only one, I guess the image, the whole references in lyrics, the fact that they mentioned them all the time and a handful of songs very beatleesque (Up in the sky, whatever, don't look back in anger, roll with it...) did the rest to oversize the debts.

the book called "The Songwriting Secrets of The Beatles by Dominic Pedler" lists a few examples of musical influences on Oasis, and perhaps more interesting that just 'direct lifts'.
For example: The opening lines on Hey Jude and Live Forever are the same intervals. The Triple Fourth root movement used in the harmony on Wonderwall is the same as a few songs of that time, not just The Beatles, but in particular used in Here Comes the Sun, and A Day In the Life.
The book also makes the reference not to get too hung up on the direct piano riff lift on Dont Look Back On Anger from Golden Slumbers/Imagine, but that the vocal melody is similar to Manfred Mann's Pretty Flamingo.

I don't see it as plagiarizing or ripping off the Beatles.
There are similarities in certain songs, but it's a subconscious thing on the part of the songwriter.

The Beatles were master synthesists. They loved American rock n roll and rnb so much, they were true fans who loved the b-sides and more obscure tunes, not just the obvious hits. They were lucky to be from Liverpool as it was famously the only place in England that had such a heavy rock n roll presence from America as opposed to other port cities in England. They were clearly influenced by a ton of music, but they never outright stole. They drew inspiration and added their own twist on it. Take “Love Me Do”, which was inspired by the song “Hey Baby” by Delbert McClinton. It’s similar but still original. They were clearly influenced by Bob Dylan on “Hide Your Love Away” but while its an obvious homage, it’s still not a straight rip off. Even their Fleetwood Mac homage which clearly channels “Albatross” isn’t a direct copy.
Oasis on the other hand are fucking hacks. Literally copying the riffs with no transformation. That shit is lame.

I love Oasis so much, they are my favourite band. And the fact that they are linked to the Beatles so heavily makes them even better because the Beatles are one of my favourite bands as well and they are both so popular! The similaritie I recognised the most between the two bands is the guitar riff in The Hindu Times which sounds alot like the sitar in Within You Without You, both amazing songs!

One Beatles reference I noticed right away was the oasis song be here now, because he can hear the backwards vocals of that throughout and then you hear the backwards guitar solo at the end which I think is great.

The end short guitar solo in " don't look back in anger" sounds like any Beatles song

  • @TheJmusic1

I think the song ‘Don’t look back in anger’ really stands out because of one chord: the E major chord in both verse and chorus. When I first heard the song, that’s what drew my attention immediately. It lends the song so much more depth and power than it would, it gone to an E minor or G major chord, and I don’t think any writer except Noel would have thought of that chord. Sorry, not an obvious Beatles comparison, but I thought an interesting point. It is also reminiscent of Pachelbels’ Canon.

"What makes Oasis sound like The Beatles?" - Nothing, really. Except for when they directly rips them off. Which they did, as this video proves, despite what you are saying.

Surprised not to her mention of Neil Innes - who wrote a pastiche of Imagine called 'How Sweet to be an Idiot'; Oasis apparently heard that song and wrote 'Whatever' - in fact, it was such an obvious steal, that Neil successfully sued Oasis and is now credited as a writer of that song...... Neil Innes was in The Rutles with Eric Idle (of Monty Python) whose film The Holy Grail was rescued by George Harrison when he bankrolled it......... George appearing in one of their films..........

I'm sure he does. That isn't the point.
The point is that an Oasis song is obviously influenced by a song from a former Beatle.
It's just needlessly pedantic to clarify that.
