Toshiba 55L621U Black Screen After Splash Pops Up & Leaves

  • This was the problem: you turn the TV on and the splash screen (Toshiba Chromecast Logo) comes on and then goes black. The LED on the front right stays red.
I replaced the main board to no success.
I tried to install the newest firmware but it was unsuccessful. It's note worthy to say the attempt to reload the firmware confirmed the LEDs are not a problem.
I don't know what else to do.
Firmware update failure attached to the end of this video.

I do repair tv's and the fix for this particular problem is to replace the led strips. The illumination is divided in 3 sections and if one led is gone causing a section to be off, then the TV will detect the fault and enters into protection mode and will shut down.
This particular model has 12 strips and they are are vertical and as you can see, the right 3rd of the screen looks slightly dark. A good indicator of that illumination sector gone bad. In other cases it could be in the center or the left side.
There is a tutorial done by shoopjimmy on the whole disassemble procedure, strips removal and installation in case any of you feel comfortable repairing yourself.
One thing I would advise is to ALWAYS replace all strips as there are good chances more of them are worn out and about to die.

That's true, I replaced the bad LEDs on a hisense and was aware that other leds will die sometimes soon, but do you think reducing the led current will give the rest of led longer life?

    • @simpleman7727

@@mrbennotmrban Yes. reducing the back light intensity will help to delay the failure of worn out LEDs.

Looks light the right side backlights are out. That is probably causing the TV to go into shutdown as a result. ShopJimmy has a youtube video for this model and they replaced the far righthand side LED backlight strip. Seems to be a very common issue with this model.

i have the 49L621U that had the identical problem. toshiba logo lit up fine, then it went black, with usual 5 flashes of the red led. i think the power supply is getting weak. i read other people saying the image is still there if you shine a flashlight and look really close, just the backlight is turning off. hit menu on the remote , fight your way into the picture settings, drop the backlight from 90 to like 10, drop brightness from 3 o like minus 2, hit ok (hard to do with screen so dim but focus). then turn it off and wait a minute, then turn it back on.

Hey just letting you know all you have to do is change the back lights most likely two strips on the left have gone out very common thing with all tv's. it seems that the same lights go out on each of all different models the patterns are very different but consitent .....

I've watched a bunch of videos and I'm pretty much convinced that the problem is the LED backlight. I just ordered a new set of LED strips from Aliexpress for $35. A set of 15. I have the Toshiba Chromecast 65" 65L621U that I bought in late 2016. I did not want to open up the TV to make doubly sure about which LED strips I need. The TV model matches the LED strips I bought and that's good enough for me. Opening it up and dealing with the huge 65" screen and not breaking it will be a chore, so I'd like to keep the 'operation window' as short as possible. I've watched a bunch of videos of people replacing the LED strips and it seems straightforward but also pretty hard. There is so much to take apart and it seems like so much can go wrong. I wish that the LEDs weren't buried under so many layers that you have to unscrew and keep track of. Seems like a real pain... suction cups to move the screen.... it's going to be a real production. Jeez.

@@Isaiahisnotonfire its a local tv repair, it turns out the led strip wasnt the problem it was the psu. they switched it and problem solved. after they changed the led strip it only lasted like 2 weeks but they did give me 90 day warranty so i took it back there and they swapped the power supply and its been working great since then. it still struggles sometimes to catch a signal for the RF antena but i do live in an area with very poor reception.
