Good topic. You can always find the remixes online or bonus tracks if there are any. That way you aren't paying for the same album over and over (vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD, 25th anniversary, deluxe edition, etc. etc.) and all their different levels of quality.
I keep a list of vinyl records I am on the hunt for, and call it up whenever I am in a record store and then I dart around looking to see what might be available. I'll check the new catalogue releases as well as used, but finding a mint re-release of something that was a one-off reissue is rare these days. (This has taught me to buy things I *really* want when they are released. He who hesitates ...). And with vinyl collecting being what it is, record store owners know what they have that is desirable to collectors and in good used condition and they price it accordingly. New special edition (re)releases and mint/unopened catalogue releases get priced at a premium. But sometimes you have to pay or go home and regret it. I came across a pristine used copy of Strong Arm Of The Law by Saxon last summer and I am still kicking myself for not buying it. I have paid a lot when I stumbled on records that I simply cannot even find used at record shows let alone stores. $75 for Long Live Rock 'N Roll by Rainbow. $65 for a sealed copy of Bomber by Motorhead (that was a find, as it was from the original vinyl release run in North America and was a radio promo copy so I got the mix and mastering that was done in the 80s but never opened or played). My point is that in the end sometimes a re-release is better than nothing, sometimes there are records that are so prohibitive price-wise to get on eBay or Discogs that if you can't find an original used vinyl out in the wild a re-issue might be the best way to make sure you get a copy for your collection. It does bear a bit of research tho, looking online to see any advance reviews. As we all know, some reissues are horribly remastered or pressed and pale in comparison to the original. I am keen to buy the upcoming yellow edition of Somewhere In Time by Iron Maiden, fir instance, but I admittedly want to see some actual audio reviews before I plunk down for that.

I just got the 40th anniversary of Stay Hungry. I really like the 2 newly unearthed tracks they found unfinished in a warehouse. Marks and AJ's parts were done but they had to add contemporary recordings of the vocals and guitars and it works. The songs sound great and not like crappy left over songs. I wish they had finished these songs then and put them on Come Out and Play
Totally relate to all your points. Specially the part of the album's travel. I'm sentimental about my records, mainly the 80' and 90' metal stuff from when I frequented record shops. So when I seek to re-buy things I sold (when I was a stupid, stupid boy), I just have to get the same version, or as close to it as possible. It needs to have taken the same journey as my self. That this actual record stood in the shelf 35 years ago. That holding it is a trip back in time... A modern reissue has no soul. Yet anyways. Hence I end up owning both remakes and originals. Sadly all this make this hobby that more expensive.
Reminds me one thing I rarely if ever buy are anniversary releases. They come across as total cash grabs by the labels imo. Not all the time but a lot of the time. Just saw a thumbnail for a 50th anniversary Dark Side Of The Moon release. Like anyone really needs that after the 40th anniversary Dark Side Of The Moon release, 25th anniversary Dark Side Of The Moon release, 10th anniversary Dark Side Of The Moon release... I think there's an original release out there 😉

I am not per se a collector , but I do enjoy having that " first " pressing , how it was heard then , .., only will by a reissue if for example a band , or members have input on how they wanted the album to sound .., that to me as a listener , as a fan of the music I like , I can get behind ..,
I’ve been burned so many times buying VG+ records on Discogs that still have annoying skips that I’ll pretty much only get NM now. And frequently original pressings are just too expensive in that condition, so I’ve had to buy some new remaster/reissues.
Some of these reissues indeed feel and look like imitations of the early pressings. Often, and contrary to what one might think, these remasters sound worse (often muddier and more mid-rangy with some extra bottom-end, but lacking brightness and transparancy) than the originals. Most of the time the original artwork got lost and the label needs to make a high-quality scan of an original jacket and retouch it, but it never looks as good as the original sleeve.
For me it's mostly the cost, but also convenience. Reissues of albums that sold for $5 in the 1970s are now being sold for $30-$60. Not gonna do it. I still have a vinyl collection, but I focus mostly on CDs just for their portability factor.
I have bought some new vinyl reissues just because it was eaiser found and cheaper than a vintage vinyl. Vintage Vinyl is cool all the same though does have problems if its worn out as some of the 70's priest L.P's I have were. Though it was much cheaper aourcing vinyl a decade or so ago than now.
I agree, but I can tell you this about Ozzy's two first albums. The first pressings do not sound good. Pretty bad to be honest. Ryan K Smith's lacquer cuts, I think from 2021 or was it 2022? sounds 10 times better.
I worked in record shops for decades and I can tell you for a fact that the glamour of the first pressing is a semi myth. During my time I had first pressings recalled for numerous reasons. Sometimes at the insistence of the band. Pink Floyd's Meddle is an example. They pulled the first pressing because they thought it sounded terrible. Secondly , Martin Poppof , probably the most opinionated music critic I have ever come across, has stated both Stairway To Heaven and Child In Time lack creativity while Free is just a demo version of Bad Company. He constantly disses CLASSIC bands an albums on his show, but does it in a way that infers his opinion is the definitive one! Trust your own ears, not someone else's
What I look for is any version pre- digital era, so I use the term "first pressing" a bit loosely, I'm really fine with any version as long as it's not a modern digital remaster.
I see your point but some albums like Zeppelin or Beatles or who Everytime in see them the covers are. In bad shape or writings on them or the rehcor of s in lousy shape but still way overpriced so I've bought some not all zeppelin an Beatles older reissues sounds great but see your points too it depends on album great topic
For cd, I feel the original acdc, Zeppelin and kiss sound like crap. I went the remastered way and the sound is better. Sometimes you gotta go remaster but some remasters aren’t good.
I Do Like these new special edition Box sets that bands are putting out, Like the RUS stuff, because I know it was done well and All of the Extras that you get for a heafty price Guaranteed! I would Kill to get A Farewell to Kings, but it is beyond what I want to pay for music anymore. With over 2000+ CD's I have not bought a single one in the last 10 years.. I Kinda Like the saving $$ thing in my point of life right now in my situation. I look at a band like RUSH or MAiden and say to myself, I Have just about Everything of them.. Why should I expend More $$, to a band that Wants more merchandise $ from me? Then some of the Basic stuff that I own will be hard pressed sold in the future with great inactivity if I were to put it on market. IE I own most of the HEART CD Discography! It will Never sell on line and just by credit trade to a record store, "Maybe"? Physical media just does not have it now, unless you are a Serious Collector of Editions and such. So reverting I have to be that Heart CD collector, with their CD collection in my wall of music, and be Proud of it, Which I am, And nothing More, really.. The Internet has Killed So many things for collecting Music, IMHO, Unless you are a Serious Collector, Whisch I am in a few CD's & Sets, which I proudly keep. But the majority of my 2000+ CD's upon my wall are just Flea Circus CD's, which you can get $1 a peice for now adays = A Loss for me = Better to have them on a wall as Art or Curiosity, as anybody can hear most of these albums on the WWW! What a Letdown to my Younger Stupid Self! But I Was into Music at the time and who would have thought better in the day?? I hope that soon CD's will become valuable again, like Vinal, but probably Not! Because they are CD's..

I just like originals of anything. Whether it’s shirts, vinyl, tapes etc.
