I play drums. The drummer is always the first to go, that’s just the way it is. I think it’s not sad at all. He survived a stroke, worked his way back to a decent level and concluded a world tour at 72 years old. Life goes on, and then it’s done.
While I'm sad to see him go, and sad for the circumstances in which he has to go, after 58 years of drumming, his body has taken a lot, and I don't want to see him end up like Phil Collins.
I attended Nicko's final concert in São Paulo last Saturday. It was a very emotional evening, though it was clear he struggled with most songs, even with the simplified arrangements (the performance of "Iron Maiden" was particularly off, and they nearly stumbled through it). It reminded me of those later Black Sabbath concerts with Bill Ward. During the show, Bruce stated that the band will return to Brazil in two years. Based on that, I would expect Maiden to keep performing at least until 2026 or 2027. I'm not thrilled about the choice of the British Lion guy as a replacement-it feels a bit like Blaze Bayley part 2. But, considering how Steve works, it’s not surprising.
Nicko's a legend. He and Neal Peart are my favorite drummers. I love Nicko for his positive attitude and energy, similar to Peart. Been a fan since 1992.
the drum intro to where eagles dare is Mr. McBrain’s mission statement, one he delivers taking Maiden from strength to strength. to know when to call it takes a lot courage. class act
I agree with your view about Joe Laz - I was really hoping he was going to get the gig. His work on those Maiden songs is incredible. And like you, I haven't spent much time listening to British Lion, but what I have heard, some of it is catchy, but I haven't been able to really get into it. I'd like to think Steve knows something we don't, given the time he has spent with Simon over these past 12 years. Having said that, Steve et al also chose Blaze - clearly not a winning formula 30 years ago. And so to your point about the air being let out of the balloon at the shows, I can see it as a possibility. Especially if they cut back on many of Nicko's signature parts, like the fills in The Trooper and similar.
The way I'm reading their announcements and wording is that Simon will take over the touring aspect while Nicko remains in the band, and if there is another studio album, I have a feeling Nicko will do that with the band.
The guys plays like a beast on British lion lives... His style on Burning, Legend, Spitfire feels very much maiden new era style. He is also a single pedal drummer and nails triplets... He is for sure a Lad, good funny guy ( reading interviews ) and would also feet that band of geezers that is maiden far more than a tea drinker like Lazarus. I can see him as an extra time for a band on the end of its carreer.
@@surfdigby He's old, and have you seen his drum kit? They could've chosen a young amazing drummer that I've seen here on YT. Choosing a fan would be much cooler.
Oh and by the way, see the Maiden songs played by the various Dickinson's bands, which in each cases, the drummers were not Nicko level, they were amazing everytime, as they were somehow faster, more aggressive, in line with Number of the beast version of the band. See dive dive live, Scream for me Sarajevo... and especially Live 99 in sao paolo, Fab versions EBCAUSE there is Adrian AND Bruce dynamic...
There's something to be said about choking on your "own" vomit. haha Loved Nicko since he joined the band. He will be missed, not only for his exceptional drumming, but his personality will be missed greatly. I hope he can continue in some musical capacity. Even if it is just to join them on stage to play a song or two.
He won't do that because he said it was his last performance with maiden. Even a song as a guest would be a performance. I think he looks very unwell be lucky if he doesn't die soon.
@16.30, there's an irony to saying you don't want them to carry on with only original members of Steve & Dave because that's exactly what they have been since 1983.
Joe lazarus is not as good as people seems to think...i was never im pressed by his covers, and seeing a few live of him, i think he would not be a good fit. Simon Dawson is a good drummer, and sorry for you guys, listen to British Lion second opus a bit more, and especially their live performances ( this is where you can judge a drummer ) and Simon can do the job justice. He is not Nicko, but he could be a new Clive, with a lot more triplets. Check songs like Spitfire, Legends, the Burning... He is very maidenesque in the delivery, and this is from live videos with smaller kit. Some of the studio recording of his sessions, on larger kits, can show how he would handle Trooper, or Powerslave... But think about something 5mn. Nicko never played the early material in a satisfactory way ( in my opinion ) Iron Maiden, Run to the hills, or Prowler never sounded as aggressive, and hard as it should. Simon might bring back aggression. Besides, he is very in line with Steve's playing. See lives of british Lion and how Steve and Simon play eye to eye... Will Peice of mind or Somewhere in time sound the same, not sure... But i can guarantee it won't sound bad.
The BEST NICKO achevement in Maiden was the ''Hallowed by thy name'' Abbey-Road sessions..... compare to the original ''disco'' beat he put this jewel of metal even much higher !!!!!!!!!! A never boring drummer (like sooo many everywhere)with so imagination and creativity. And don't forget to listen ''Roch'n roll Suzie'' from Pat Travers a pure groovy beat from him... His most brutal playing was with the Blaze era...he play heavier and faster than anywhere else in his carrer.... Rime of,, Sea of madness..The red and the black..Clansman etc etc etc etc I'm happy for one precious thing about his retirement... he gonna have much more jam with his R & R rib's party and Titanium-Tart !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you the best jam soon my idol and drum mentor since 1985 NICKO !!!!!!!!!!! Caus of you i play with a cover band named ''Strangers in time'' in 2015 and for my first show i was soooo nervous.. The playlist was so affraid.... and we have to close after Slayer and Megadeth very good cover bands !!! You cant be more nervous than me this night 😁😉 HAEEYYYTT ALL

Agreed. His career is to be celebrated! He was a true joy bringer! It’s time to cheer his accomplishments not mope that a career is over.
Nicko McBrain did a very god job as Iron Maiden`s drummer 42 Years
Thanks for clearing that up

The new drummer will be great. He'll be able to play many of the songs Nicko didn't play or play well anymore.
@@CBT5777maybe a different new drummer but not the guy they picked.
Great episode/discussion! Nicko was one of a kind!

Simon hasn't even played a single bar with Iron Maiden yet, and he's already being written off. At least give the guy a chance.

100% agree.

I add that Simon play with double bass drum and it could be great with Maiden.... but the fills and magic touch are needed too... hope the best
Great episode!
The documentary has already been announced. What a great prediction. 🤦♂️
Happy Retirement Nicko, when he had the stroke then i knew his playing days were on borrowed time.
I would bet anything that maiden already has an album recorded in the bag with Nicko on drums.

I hope its not the beginning of the band fragmenting like AC/DC did. First it was Malcolm then Phil, Brian temporarily, and Cliff.

True, but so much time has passed that if the band was reduced to the two of them, it wouldn’t feel the same.
@LairoftheAlchemist there'll always be Jannick
It is time for Maiden to retire completely.

Disco beat ??
It's not going to make singing the songs any different for Bruce, the songs structure isn't going to change by a drummer playing less fills etc.
The body's not even cold and they've replaced him
He didn't die😮😮 yet anyway
Maybe the whole band should just retire. They have done everything.
Dave Lombardo…..💛🖤💛 I have seen Maiden since 1981!!!🤟🖤💛🤘🏿……. 4:12
