The Samara Story - Rewilding the Great Karoo

Award-winning Samara Karoo Reserve is a conservation journey on 67,000 acres of born-again wilderness in South Africa’s heart-stoppingly beautiful Great Karoo region. Founded in 1997, Samara has pioneered the rewilding of this semi-arid yet uniquely biodiverse landscape, catalysing an ambitious vision to expand the conservation estate to a 3-million-acre footprint in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.
Today the reserve is one of South Africa’s most diverse safari destinations, comprising five vegetation biomes across strikingly varied topography, home to over 60 mammal species including the Big Five and cheetah, as well as 225 bird species. Two intimate lodges welcome just 26 guests at a time for slow, meaningful and exceptional safari encounters.
In staying at Samara, every guest plays a role in safeguarding the landscape in perpetuity. Yet for those who visit, Samara’s magic extends beyond its conservation importance. I have travelled through the Karoo numerous times, but never seen it like this. This is a complete transformation from a scrubby, dry landscape to something much more beautiful. I will keep an eye on Samara to follow progress.

Thank you for sharing your story I want to start a rewilding in my country Somalia I grew up with wild dogs cheetah leopard elephant and more. There are few left but I will do what I can to bring back the wildlife. ❤

Soon the painted dogs will be reintroduced to the samara private game reserve and will it possible to welcome and introduce 10 new animal species like spotted deers, elks, mooses, american bisons, red kangaroos, blackbucks, bighorn sheeps, caribous, wild boars and gray wolves to this protected game reserve
