  • After we crossed the border between the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape there was still some beautiful gravel road we travelled on before reaching the tar road leading to Aberdeen. We didn’t know that this small town was one of the architectural conservation areas of the Karoo. Driving through the Aberdeen area was like taking a step back into different time zones with all the different architectural designs. From Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Gothic Revival and Flemish Revival any traveller would love to see this all. Not to mention where the town is located, the huge Camdeboo plains to the one side and the mountain escarpment on the other. Enjoy! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #aberdeen #eastercape #camdeboo

    The grave of Stefanie Fouché belongs to my grandfather's sister. She passed away of whooping cough, 25 days before my grandfather was born. The graveyard used to be in pristine condition, right up to a few years ago. Apparently, it was all thanks to someone who took the upkeep upon himself, but who has since passed away.

    Nice to see Aberdeen again, but also with great sadness. My friend since about 1975 use to live in that house on the corner on your left where you stood for quite some time at 9:13 on the video opposite the Magistrate's court. He passed away a few months ago. He was also the Town Clerk of Aberdeen for some time.

      We're so sorry to hear about your friend's passing. 😥 If he were Town Clerk, we assume he had been in the area for a long time and it's always such a pity to lose someone like that who has become such a pillar of the local community. We hope his legacy will last for a long time to come. So this was a sad trip down memory lane for you.😏

    The building at 9:01 that you refer to as a synagogue, is a house built by my great-grandfather Carl Friedrich Franz Maske. You will find his gravestone together with some other family members in the cemetery. He was the owner of the general dealer store next door. The house was named Carmen Villa after his daughter (my grandmother.) If you go inside the house there is a doorway between the house and the general dealer store that is now bricked closed. We had a large family re-union in that house in 2009 on the occasion of Carl's granddaughters 90th birthday, soon after the house had been extensively renovated. Aberdeen is also known for the town where Pagels Circus used to keep all their animals in the winter. There is a house called Pagel House where the owner stayed. In 2009 it was a B&B. In 2009 we attended a church service in that Methodist Church. At the time it was still operational. Very sad to see it looking in such poor condition.

    They are attempting to reintroduce Quaggas via the Quagga project, hence my asking whether the "zebra" that you spotted on the farm on the way to McGregor was possibly one 😳. When we drove through Aberdeen, it was an overcast and gloomy day, its amazing what some brilliant sunlight can do for a place. Stunning Churches and Synagogue and Magistrates Court. One always asks what posseses a town council to approve buildings such as that red face brick single level structure on the right as you entered the town, especially a town so rich in architecture. I will never see a church steeple the same again after Merweville 😄. I love this channel. 😀

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      We honestly thought your previous comment about the quagga was tongue-in-cheek, we never knew about the Quagga Project. 😱 Wouldn't that be something! 🦓 It's all a question of timing, we also always comment to each other about how different one's perspective is of a place when the weather is rainy and overcast. We had good weather for the most part, with a spot of rain here and there, but lots of wind. The Eastern Cape is windy! 😁 You're always welcome on our travels, it's great that you enjoy them!

    The house on the right at 11.33- 11.37 was ownd by me from 2006 - 2011. 2nd oldest proprty in the town. I also installed and operated the first high speed internet system to the farms in 2007 /2008, you can see the various antenna on the church if you look closely (its still in operation by a different company despite ICASA attempts to close it down !). I miss Aberdeen but I don't miss SA 'politics'

    It was lovely to see Aberdeen again. My childhood friend had a B & B in the oldest house in town. He and his partner sold it in 2015, and they continued to live there. His partner passed away in 2019, and my friend passed away on 7 December 2022. He was only a month younger than I am. I'm still very sad about that.

    Love Aberdeen. 2000 seats in this magnificent church. In the cemetery is the grave of Boer warrior John Alexander Baxter, age 22 when he excecute by British forces on 31.10.1901. Charge against him he was dressed in imperial uniform. His grandfather was from England. Member of Genl Smuts forces invading the Cape. The Voortrekker Charl Cilliers departure from the Camdeboo plaines, including my Voortrekker grandfather Ockert BRITS, b 1787....his farm was to the east in the Koup ..

    Many of the cemeteries are vandalised. I recently tried to look for my ancestor graves (dating around 1800s) in Cradock, Graaff-Rienet and Middleburg. There's 8 documentated graves between those towns. Out of those 8 we could only find 1, there were many graves that were missing headstones.

    The house at 9 mins. called Carmen Villa was built in 1898, by Franz Maske, as described by my brother Colin.
    It's current owner(Ralph Krall) bought it in 2010. Sadly he painted it the current " horrible" colour, and also enclosed the rambling stoep with hideous steel lattice grids. Ralph died in a car accident in 2018 en route to Graaff Reinet. The house is apparently for sale. The joinery/doors/architraves/flooring/balustrades to the staircase inside is beautiful.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for adding this interesting info! 👌🏻We can only imagine how beautiful the timberwork on the interior of the house must be. True craftsmen were most probably commissioned to do that. Another person who watched our video, also mentioned that they saw the property is currently up for sale. 🏡 I hope the purchaser restores the building to its former glory days, which must've been spectacular.

    If your viewers want to look inside the "Villa" at 9.01 its on the P24 website currently for sale, There may be other houses of interest too - up for sale on that site too. I find it fascinating to see how many original details have survived. Its clearly a town which has had great wealth, I assume from ostrich and merino farming - and its lovely to see it in such a tidy state too.Thanks for going to the graveyard - I love Victorian graveyards - they used to give so much information on the gravestones. They are very informative; sometimes one can find evidence of epidemics which swept through these communities wiping out whole families virtually...heartbreaking but somehow the people left, survived.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always find graveyards fascinating knowing that every single grave has a lifetime's worth of stories to tell, no matter how short that lifetime may have been. I was particularly touched by the grave of the little girl. It's interesting that you mention that you saw that property for sale. In every town we travel through, the 'For Sale' boards are ever-present and we always wonder if those residents are moving to the city or to another small town. All part of the dynamics of any town, however big or small it may be. 🏘️

    • @nonibbs
      @nonibbs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DustBugsTravel One feels the love those parents had for their 3 year old, it is very touching. When you look at these houses for sale - sometimes they are clearly probate properties. I find that really sad too - that its the treasured home now up for sale. So clearly full of many memories, which in years to come the family will regret selling, but at the time of sale they wanted the money even more.. It is the dynamics of life really - some come and some go. But more tend to go than come - it takes a special kind of person who wants to live away from the rat race.

    • @nonibbs

      I agree - give me a dirt road any day. I too have driven thousands and thousands of miles across SA in the last 20 years, in the average compact saloon car from a hire firm and never had any problems myself. My brother's father in law got a puncture on a dirt road outside Garies, but he was driving like a bat out of hell that day! It slowed us down no end! But that was the only problem we had. And the garage in Garies "sort of mended" it for us - when they handed the car back apparently the tyre was still leaking air . I had already parted company with them and was on my way to Durban for the rest of my vac, on the back roads. An SUV would just add unnecessary expense to the trip and I expect they like drinking petrol too. Another plus factor for dirt roads as well, I don't think I have ever been stopped for a licence check by the police, on a dirt road either...They seem to favour the tar roads..LOL
