A tour of LOXTON, South Africa - Strange Karoo Village

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ย. 2024
- Hi everyone! In this video, I explore the fascinating, unique and unusual village of Loxton. It is situated in the Great Karoo region of South Africa, in the Northern Cape. It is c. 600km from Cape Town and more than 900km away from Johannesburg, and can be considered a remote location.
This was my second visit to Loxton. I previously visited this part of the world when at school during a chess tournament, which was held here. I remember the beautiful trees, wide unpaved streets, the sounds of nature and the miniature stop signs.
Join me on a tour through this intriguing village - among other things, we will explore some of the residential areas where we notice the unusual location of the telephone poles in the street, the miniature traffic signs and the breathtaking trees scattered across the village.
We also stumble across the Loxton Police Station and explore the Pear Tree Campsite, the Dutch Reformed Church as well as the central business district. Well, by that I mean the Loxton Cooperative and Loxton Lekker. I also walk past an old creche school (which I subsequently learned is now a private building) and a restored hand pump to assist with the water supply of the village. The sportsfields also have some unique characteristics - but no spoilers here!

Let's go and explore!
Willie
I was amazed how clean the streets are. Not one piece of paper ir rubbish. A beautiful town. Will remember if ever I pass.
Definitely Linda. It is very obvious that the locals take huge pride in the cleanliness of their town. Absolutely worth a visit when you get the chance. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Enjoyed your tour around Loxton … it’s like a step back into the past! I’m an ex SAfrican living in USA. There is no sound that can compare to the sound of the turtle dove… miss it!
Hi Danny, appreciate you checking out my content from the USA! The sounds of nature in the Karoo including Loxton beat the traffic of the city any day of the week!
This brings back memories from my childhood when my parents would visit my maternal grandmother during school holidays. My uncles and aunts would all be there with my numerous cousins. Thanks for this it's appreciated 👍
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Graham! I'm delighted that you enjoyed the video and that it took you on a trip down memory lane!
Thank you so much for the most comprehensive mini-docu about Loxton that I have seen. I have been searching for info about this town but not much is out there.
Glad it was helpful and enjoyable! Check out my silent walking tour of Loxton too for more footage. A beautiful part of South Africa.
I so giggled at the short street signs....! Made me think the place is for fairies and dwarfs!! And the telephone poles in the middle of the roads! To save the beautiful trees!!!❤❤❤❤🌹🌹
I love the telephone poles in the middle of the road and the short street signs! I wonder what the story is behind the stop signs in particular. In places like Iceland, many locals still believe in elves (also called Huldufólk) so maybe here in Loxton many also have the same beliefs - who knows :) The trees of Loxton is really something special and kudos to the community for preserving them.
Baie dankie vir jou videos oor die Karoo dorpies. Ek is verbaas oor hou mooi Loxton is. Ek self is in Aberdeen gebore en waardeer jou werk so geweldig. ❤
Groot plesier Errol. Bly jy geniet my videos. Dankie vir jou ondersteuning!
Very lovely and peaceful place...I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the support :)
Born in 1959 i lived in loxton aged 5 years old, still have memories and photos, tks for this info, appreciate
That's great to hear about your memories! Thanks for watching and supporting my channel, it is greatly appreciated :)
Great adventure Willie!!! It's nice to see new different places and that makes me want to visit there!!! Thank you!
Thank you, Providence! It really is an interesting place to visit!
A traffic jam of goats😂. Very nice place, Willie and I like that they are staying true to their roots and not allowing big corporations to open there. I think it's also true what you said about the churches standing alone and not getting lost in architecture. It certainly makes them stand out and their design appreciated.
That traffic jam was insane, Sheila! Haha what a difference from the cities, don't you think. I also tip my hat to the locals regarding keeping the integrity of the village. Churches often gets lost amongst the wider city scape and other architecture in more urban settings, but in the countryside in South Africa they do stand out! Almost like the cathedrals in many English towns such as Chichester. Cheers as always for the immense support you give this channel!
Another great glimpse of the Karoo. Thanks!
Cheers for your kind words! Much appreciated
Hey Willie this place is awesome it has a chillax vibe to it it's a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities .
Keep it up man 🙂👍
Cheers my friend, definitely a place to visit to escape the madness of cities. Those trees lining the streets are incredible and you really feel connected to nature in this part of the world. Thanks as always for exploring together virtually!

Hey, Willie ... as always, what fun to take a walk with you and see somewhere unique. My grandparents lived in a small remote farming town in Wisconsin, population 73. Loxton reminded me of it, except Loxton looks a lot healthier! As for the power poles down the middle of the roads ... pretty creative idea, I'd say!! The roads all seemed to have lots of big trees on both sides. Trees and power lines are inherently enemies!! Tree limb touches a power line (like on a windy day) ... bam!! Fried tree limb, maybe extending to the whole tree, and maybe taking out the power to part of Loxton. So ... nice job, Loxton power people ... keep that juice flowing and those trees growing! [Greetings from Tucson]
As always, a pleasure to hear from you across the pond! You know what, as soon as you mentioned the trees on both sides, the penny dropped - that is exactly why the power poles would be down the center! Would love to get to Wisconsin one day and check out that town...but hey, so many places on the bucket list! Glad you enjoyed this one :)
@@willieexplore FYI, I was an electrical power distribution equipment engineer in a previous career.
@@AZqyc now that makes a lot of sense!
Glad i found you and thanks for content so sadly overlooked.
What a nice message to receive, Tim - thank you very much for your support!
I met a South African taxi driver yesterday in Brighton and he reminded me of you Willie 😂 nice glimpse of rural South Africa. Seems very peaceful there. Looks very clean in the streets and people are friendly. Will have to do that collab when you're back! Oh and BTW, I'll be cheering on the Boks this evening!
Hello mate! Nice to hear from you. Firstly, congratulations on reaching the all important 1K subs! It is a massive achievement and line in the sand. Yes, definitely still up for that collab. Let me know when works for you. You should put the Karoo region in South Africa on your bucket list, some amazing scenery and walks in the area. Cheers for the support for our BOKS, they will need it against a tough opponent tonight!
@@willieexplore thanks mate, it took long enough 😅 I'll be in touch, I had a few ideas. The main reason I want you guys to win is because I'd rather we lost against you in the semi than the French 😆 South Africa generally has been high on my bucket list so I'll hopefully check it out at some point. Enjoy the rest of your time over there!
@@no_soy_rubio we'll take your support regardless haha! Cheers mate :)

I remember visiting Loxton in the 80s.
I walked into the bank to cash a cheque, but there was nobody in sight.
I asked a passerby ‘Waar’s ‘ie mense van ‘ie bank?’ (Yes, there was a bank then) He thumbed across the street ‘Daar’s hy’, he said.
The bank manager, the sole employee of that institution, was sitting across the street drinking coffee with a friend, having left his realm open to the passing populace.
After I’d been given a coffee by the Oom, the bank manager took me across and cashed my cheque.
I also remember driving past a farm sign many times, just outside Loxton on the road to Fraserburg. The farm had what I always thought was a pretty name - ‘Jakkalsdans’, evocative of jackals serenading the moon on a sparkling Karoo night!
What a great story, Tony! Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel!
Konsistorie in English is a Vestry of the church in English. Never heard of Loxton ever. Thank you for sharing. Throughly enjoyed looking at this video.

Thanks for the feedback Cecelia! Unfortunately my knowledge of church organs are limited so I didn't know it was a special one until someone else pointed it out in a comment :)
Awesome vid!

I like your video. Just one comment, there are power lines in the middle of the streets in Carnarvon too, and I think in many other Karoo towns.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Johan. Grateful for your support! That is interesting, I have never seen those poles in the middle of the street anywhere else, but I love it.
Very very precious awesome wlldone brother nanda an Cornelius gauteng ❤
Thanks for the nice message and for watching my videos! A special part of South Africa this.
My mom passed from lung cancer and loxton was a factor due to asbestos poison, specific cancer related, she was borned in 1942 lived there at age 30 plus
So sorry to hear that!
The Karos Guest House is 5 star in the middle of the town (Corner of Margaretha Prinsloo and Probert )and it makes Loxton a much better stop than Victoria West- if travelling north/south-We are aware that they are renovating another building to be similar to Karos-this enterprise will be a seed for the town to grow as guests become property buyers...the dirt road to Beaufort is a stunning drive and can be done in a normal car-The lei water works and the central electric poles are great-In July we'll be there for the 4th time-cheers Mike 'n' May
Cheers for the comment and additional information! I would love to return one day to drive that dirt road you mentioned. I've heard good things about the guest house!
Willie die Karoo is uniek. Ek mis dit baie!!
Dis verseker Tosca. Ons land!
Thanks for sharing liove it
My pleasure, Shaun! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very quite place
Certainly is :)
In the TH-cam documentary "An Impossible Return" about forced-removals in Cape Town during Apartheid one of the victims explains that it was his grandfather, then living in District Six, who had changed the colour of cream soda from white to green. The soda-fountain in his shop was the first to sell green cream soda.
That is very interesting, thanks for sharing!
I was born not away from Loxton a place called Williston.
Hi Sammy! Love Williston and Carnarvon area too. Pity I could not squeeze them into this particular trip, but maybe next time :)
Rusks ...I am really jealous..I love rusks...looks like an interesting Town
I love them too, and miss them here in the UK! I had a great time in Loxton

You get the poles in the middle of the road in Carnarvon as well. The Trees will not interfere with the electrical lines.
That's interesting, Willem. Thanks for watching!
Hi Willie I am married to a Loxton her name is Penelope and her fathers name was Victor. We do not have any history feed back. Her father and family originated from this area only sheep farming and stories were ever recounted from memory

Perhaps the poles are to protect from having to trim the trees?
And just to keep the trees on both sides, definitely considerations yes!
Willie hoe gaan dit daar ek is terug by favourite video!
Groete

Comparing Loxton to Cape Town is like comparing chess to snakes & ladders. A different world! Thanks for watching
It is not that unusual to have poles down the centre of a road. There are a number of towns in SA that have this arrangement. It allows trees on sidewalks to grow unhindered.
Cheers Colin. If you know of other towns, please let me know as I have never seen this anywhere in South Africa. But then again, it is such a big country!
@@willieexplore I have just been on a 6000km trip around SA and came across several towns with this arrangement. I will be hard pressed to name them with a level of confidence. However one that springs to mind is Barkley East as we parked under a tree in a side road to enjoy a coffee and the pole was right in front of us. Go to Google street view in Barkley East. The street view only goes down the main road. Click on any crossroad and then look up and down the side road. The poles are easily visible. It is another town with lush trees in all the side roads.
Nice to see the meat industry still doing well in sa.

Could be safe living there ?
Definitely, but it might not be easy for large numbers to settle there as the residents are keen to preserve the town.
Are snakes common in the area?
Thanks for watching and commenting Pheladi! Good question. I'm not sure. In general, the Northern Cape has a lot of snakes, but maybe some of the locals or people familiar with the area can get an answer for you.
