"Breguet understands everything Rolex doesn't and none of what Rolex does." That is one of the best worded observations I've heard on this channel. Too true.
Breguet continues to showcase high horology at its finest. A legendary manufacture that creates some of the most exceptional watches on the market and owning one lets you become part of that history. True works of art for your wrist....hand crafted watchmaking for connoisseurs and those who appreciate the extraordinary historical contributions Breguet made to the industry. Absolutely love their watches - like owning your own art gallery of hand finished guilloche or grand feu enamel.
the previous generation breguet marine 5827 chronograph in rose gold with black dial on rubber is so unbelievably beautiful, i think it's the best high-horology sports watch that money can buy (aesthetics, value, etc)
Jaquet Droz is the Swatch Group bespoke brand now. Breguet needs to introduce an innovation model in their line up where they have fun with the design and do a new case. Maybe in this new model they create FJ Journe influenced designs with less text, maybe do a piece that uses both enamel and guilloche on the dial. Next year is their 250th anniversary, they need to take this opportunity to make a big splash to draw interested in the brand.
Discussion about Bregeut generally misses the point. Breguet are not about marketing - they're about watches. And they make and continue to release beautiful, innovative, rare watches as well as more affordable daily sports. Yes, they depreciate, but since when was market performance the arbiter of class? The recent rise of independents has been largely to do with a speculative asset market, manipulated by well-known industry players. That said, FPJ, GF, RR and MB&F have adopted key Breguet design cues, that a more forward looking Breguat should have hedged against.
Marketing is important if the company wants to stay in business. People aren't bringing up the depreciation of models as a complaint about investment losses; the huge price drop is often 50% and shows how little demand there is to buy a handmade watch at a steep discount. I got an estimate for my Breguet Classique and was shocked the dealer would only offer $6k for it (I was expecting $11k). A Breguet watch can and likely will sit on a shelf for a year before it's sold. Breguet needs to remind zoomers why it's so special and can't take its brand awareness among collectors for granted. No promises have been made that customers will continue to desire a Breguet if the brand doesn't explain why they should be considered.
I agree Christian, Swatch needs to put work into making Breguet their crown jewel because it is a storied company named for the greatest watchmaker of all time.
JESUS!! I know shite about vintage watches, but after this most glorious endorsement I'm gonna blow my life savings... lol. I could listen to Christian do this about any subject
I'd love a Breguet Tradition 37mm. Also I wish they'd make enamel dial without a cutout for a so-so date window (what a faux pas). Let them eat cake! (she never said it)
Thank you Christian for speaking out, I even picked up alot from the few slides of their older commissioned wrist watches that I was not aware of which have sort of set the design language of the brand today. So, we need more of this and more sources of education wether it is at conventions, youtube, boutiques. launch parties etc. Swatch are being butt heads about it as you have mentioned.
I got to meed Ahmad Shahriar recently, there was a lot going on that night and I was nervous to voice any of "my thoughts" on the brand to someone like that. That being said he was a very nice guy and took his beautiful watch off his wrist to show me. He seemed pasisonate and who knows maybe swatch has his hands tied but my hope is that they become more popular in the coming years, I love thier watches.
It's all about having a distinctive case. AP has Royal Oak, Rolex has Oyster, Patek's Nautilus and Aquanaut can't be mistaken for anything else. Brequet doesnt have anything of the sort.
FP Journe is a first generation watch maker behind his brand, it will have to end up like Breguet eventually, in fact, it some what heading towards that direction with their current structure and being owned partly by a group (Chanel). So, no one knows the brand will end up like, I am sure Journe is working very hard to ensure it progresses as it should, will it? Very hard question to answer, especially as time goes by and the brand begins to out live its founder
Yet, despite all the concerns Christian mentioned about Breguet being able to adjust to the modern age, it still was top ten in sales as recently as ~2014. Something happened in the past decade where the brand has completely fallen out of the Morgan Stanley top 20.
I just think of them as very solid dress watches which I do have some but it also isn’t where most of the market is. Most people are just going with sport models
As I wrote in my comment below, Breguet's situation is no different from even the like of Patek to a very large degree. However, Breguet will have to educate and that is not possible because the Brand I have noticed is very quiet and is not well marketed, they have to intelligently market themselves and here is the bog problem; They need to improve the beveling on their movements, they fall in the same category of Parmigiani, they are almost haute horology but refuse to properly finish their movements!
Christian. T4YC. You say all Breguet's were "customs" in the 20th Century. Does this mean that they had long 4 feet lugs, a coffin tank, and were heavily chromed?
So, I'm a Rolex fan true& true just for the reasons you mentioned, integrity, quality and overall solidity they reflect and I've benn true all mainstream brands over my twenty years of collecting, but I must admit that a breguet is a hidden treasure that somehow ended up being the "dog" of the industry. Much more charming than Lange, Patek, Moser and even the new darling Cartier. But I think the problem is the loss of being independents same as Vacheron. if one dare to look at the hit brands, all are independent, that's the key to prestige, conglomerates destroy brands and legacies...
In my country Breguets are popular with women and the Marine collection is popular as a precious metal sports watch, with certain crowd of people. I think to people that love watches, the way Swatch juxtaposed Brequet and Blancpain by producing tiered clones of eachother's watches (I don't think I need to mention model names, doing some research will reveal quite a line up) killed both brands and both of them are suffering, especially Breguet because even though there may be some changes to the complication, I don't want to buy a Breguet when there is a similar Blancpain. It doesn't make Breguet "special." They made Breguet the Lexus of the watch world, whereas in terms of history, intrinsic value of the brand, workmanship (the lacquered and guilloche dials!) they really should be whispered along with the Patek's and Lange's. Shame.
Where are you from? Breguet are not popular anywhere. They sell 20,000 watches a year worldwide. And by women you are referring to a small subset of upper middle to upper class women.
Marketing and so on might be a reason, but honestly, Breguet just failed to produce a good looking watch on a bracelet. That is what cripples most of these brands. They just don't have a product that resonates with what most people like these days.
Nah man there are plenty of watches that either resonate but don't smash (legend diver, moser) or aren't distinctive and do (Explorer). The difference is marketing.
@@Newerasamearea Very few think a Moser looks good, even people who don't care/know a lot about watch brands. I like watches and often show different pieces to friends and family, of which many judge purely on asthetics.

Rolex v. Breguet. It's an inappropriate contest once beyond the Daytona/Type XX comparison. Breguet dress watches should be considered alongside Patek and VC. At a micro level Patek and VC have (arguably) slightly better finishing than Breguet, but they are SO boring: just look at a Breguet Reveil du Tsar if you need to see high horology wonder. Yes it should be amazing at north of $40K but it's a bargain compared to similarly spec'd Patek or VC. Thank goodness Breguet are rare to see.
How are you an analyst and are comparing totally different segments of horology? Rolex has nothing to do with high horology. Breguet is lost right now yes, no question.
Because while they are different segments, Breguet used to be the brand that indicated status. Yes, Breguet never was and will never be a brand to serve the larger market of commonfolk that Rolex does, but the perception of the king of watches has swapped hands. For that reason, I think the comparison is reasonable to make
Breguet is better than AP. AP is a one watch wonder. I think dress watches are less popular these days and they dont have a compelling sport watch. This really hurts them. Their image is too old fashioned.

Why on earth did you not wear yours for this video!? 😮😢
I traded my Rolex GMT for the new Breguet type xx, and I feel like I just graduated from watch collecting. It is a completely different world.
When I started this journey into watches I discovered Breguet and VC. I can't honestly consider a Rolex, knowing what I know.
I 'd maybe add JLC
Yeah when I started I thought I wanted a Patek and a Rolex - now I want Breguet, JLC, & Lange
The Winston Churchill Breguet chronograph Pocket watch is one of the 2-3 most famous Breguet watches in history. He wore it for decades and decades.

Christian, at 9:34 you show the 7027 - do you own that model, or the 7097? love both
They got a fantastic alarm marine watch. So underrated

Great interview, that’s what watch collection is about.
What I am also wondering is why there are nearly no vintage Breguet watches from the 1940s or 1950s.
Fantastic episode, love the Breguet type XX. That Vaer Sam is wearing is atrocious. Tell Sam to put the datejust on

Why
They need a Swatch collaboration 🙄
I would legit buy one 😂.
Hopefully it would do better than the Blancpain one, lol.
A Breguet/Swatch collaboration to produce a Swatch version of Breguet’s Type 20 pilots watch would be great!
