Good to see this powerhouse working and not stuck in a museum. We can only hope it happens again

Bob Ingram I agree but better a museum than a scrap yard!

They can't. Because she is the last of her make. And almost every piece of her is irreplaceable

@@tomedy_official you know there is another Q1 at the NRM

@@trainman9024 this is the same one that's in the museum now because it was far too expensive to keep running due to it being unique. So sometime at the start of the 21st century it was decided to preserve it forever and in the museum

The q1 is one of my favourite steam locomotives because it was ugly. The loco wasn't meant to be an A4 or a duchess, it was built so that it could be strong and easy to maintain. Such an underrated machine. Love it so much, I really do. 👍🏻

Just Enough Essential Parts. A brilliant powerful locomotive.

Despite the manpower shortage late in WW II, Bulleid designs and the SR actually builds a locomotive with inside cylinders. Inside cylinders. WHY?

Under the skin or lack of it, the Q1 was a development of the conventional looking Q class. I think that cost and time constraints meant that it was less risky to rework an existing design. The lack of a running plate meant that the inside cylinders and valve gear were reasonably easy to access, though, as you suggest, not as easy as outside gear. Also, inside cylinders on an 0-6-0 allow higher speeds increasing the versatility of the class.

You try and design an 0-6-0 with outside cylinders. The overhang would make it ride like a bucking bronco. Bucking, I said.

Correct me if I am wrong but is there only one Q 1 in existence and that's in a museum somewhere. Is this that engine???

Not anymore it’s home is at the National railway museum while it will probably never steam again .but the NRM is taking very good care of the locomotive so we can at least be happy with that.
