@@guilhermecaiado5384 I would like to actually be able to play the games on modern hardware though. Its my childhood game so that would be amazing. I really don't think Project Aces would mess with it too much, although I would be worried about changes to physics, especially with 04 because it had the best physics out of any AC game for me.
Dude you're absolutely right, if these games were re-released on PS4 and Xbone as a remastered collection I would buy it quicker than you could say 'bogey on your six'.
I liked the Razgriz myth of Ace Combat 5.. But man, when you were MOBIUS 1 Leading the entire air force of the ISAF against Megalith, and suddenly, you're the the hero, you're the veteran, and no one is telling you what to do, everyone on the radio saying "Follow Mobius 1's lead!!" Oh man. So good. (Also, the merc. aspect of AC0 and fighting your "brother" at the end was cool too).
The story, graphics (For the time. They actually look quite good today, in my opinion), soundtrack (Agnus Dei. Holy crap that was awesome) and gameplay were amazing. Even the radio chatter voice acting was pretty well done. I adore this game. It's my favourite of all time. Also, Mobius One has to be one of the most badass characters of all time. And, the great thing is, he is you!
I like all the ones for PS2 (4,5, Zero) and 6 on 360. I really like that they each had a different way of showing story cutscences too (anime style cutscenes, CGI FMVs, and in the case of 6, in game 3D cutscenes [though I don't remember if Zero had a unique style or if it was one of the styles I mentioned]). Also great is the widescreen option that wasn't extremely prevalent in the sixth gen era; and the "alternate earth" setting that is present in most of the AC games.
Ponimaju Zero's unique style was using actual video of real actors. Although the backgrounds in those cutscenes looked computer generated. On paper it sounds odd, but I thought it gave it an interesting aesthetic.
Goodyear Cup Series I don't remember that, I must not have played it much. FMV can have a unique/nostalgic style, I know one of the newer Command and Conquer games does something similar, and the newest version of NHL for consoles has real life footage of the outside of arenas, and some real life video of the commentators. Gives it a nice throwback to the 90s FMV, except without all the pixelation and discolouration.
I agree with you, being that I fly in real life, and I've always played flight sims, Ace Combat gameplay really isn't that great. I love the series because of the story, and despite the fact that it's a very limited and confined arcade game, playing it with the context of the story makes it incredibly fun.
I spent HOURS on this when I was a kid. Bought back from eBay some time ago, and still having fun with it. This was the game that even made me want to be a fighter pilot. Also kind of ironic this is my second favorite. Ace Combat; 5 is my most favorite, then Zero. I miss Strangereal but real-life earth is ok with me personally.
The way this game used the Dualshock 2 pressure sensitive buttons was AMAZING! This game is amazing. I just learned how to play discs on an emulator. XD
It is brilliant, i'm playing through it right now for the first time in years and it's still really good. I tried using PCSX2 but i couldn't figure it out and graphics were all glitchy so i'm using my old PS2 instead which is a shame cuz i'd like to see this game run at 1080p on my pc.
Absolutely stellar game part of an amazing trilogy of PS2 titles. I can't express my love for AC4, 5, and 0 enough. Here's hoping for AC7 and an HD collection on PS4!
This was the first game I played in the AC series back in the day, so this review brought back alot of PS2 nostalgia. I loved the art in the cut scenes!
Ah, PS2 games from 2001, just grabbed Red Faction the other day because of an awesome review of Mark's extolling its awesomeness! The system works Mark!
You say that the game doesn't need the plot, but believe it or not, the plot is the reason a lot of people buy these games. While it is till undeniably fun, I doubt it would have the same level of popularity if it didn't elements like Yellow 13, Ulysses, The Boy, The story of Mobius 1, etc.
If you love the way this game looks check out Ace Combat Infinity. Its alot like Ace Combat 4 and they brought most of the music back. The only problem is that its a PS3 exclusive.
And that it's an online game with a very short story, very few maps, and an annoying ass fuel system that Namco Bandai is too stuck up about to allow a one time payment of unlimited fuel for. The gameplay is fun but these things really hinder the experience and I got bored of it after about 9 hours, most of which involved waiting for servers since matches only last 5 minutes each.
I love this game......just found it today at a comic book store for $4 ......flying the blackbird over the water with the rooster tails blazing. Feeling like Clint Eastwood in fire fox 🔥
I like how the aircraft had different abilities. Some turn tighter, some fly higher, some fly faster, and for the most part they matches the ability to the reputation of the aircraft. Not exactly but at least wasn't in a tomcat and stalling at 30,000 feet.
Wait that paintjob on the F15 at the end of the video... I's Cipher's from Ace Combat Zero! OMG! It's like a past cameo of a future game!... (Or something like that.)
Indeed! The PS2 Ace Combat games, AC4, AC5, & AC0, would make splendid HD collections, especially if ported to the Vita handheld! Let's get this DONE, Namco!
Great review, but I would like to point out that you don't fly for Osea in AC4, you fly for Osea in AC5. In AC4, you fly for ISAF (Independent State Allied Forces).
I agree, Assault Horizon is nothing more than an action arcade in a flight sim shooter, as well as a movie in disguised as a playable game, which is the reason I play it 4 the story. The very best has always been Ace Combat 4, 5, & Zero that were on the PS2.
I always did enjoy Ace Combat and it was one of the best PS2 exclusives back in the day and Ace combat 6 was an awesome Xbox 360 exclusive. I will say though that I was disappointed that they did not announce a new Ace combat game at E3 this year.
I really liked unsunga war (AC5) the story was interesting and the intro song was just so fitting :P Belkan War (AC0) has some really nice missions and also the prototype ship you unlock are sweet but redoing each missions 3 time to unlock each route is a bit tedious. Anyways along with AC4 the 3 PS2 AC games were pretty amazing and i always like to go back to them.
I truly believe that, those games have not reach full power of the PlayStation 2, and they look very good, if they 're-release them again and remake them with better graphics again, the games would be more smooth, better looking and funner with more content, because back then they didn't had as much knowledge as now a days in how to make them better, that was top for back in the days.
On the back of the game's cover, it says it is capable of 2 players, does anyone know if this is like a split screen feature? Maybe someone who owns the game, please?
I loved playing Ace Combat 2 on my PS1 when I was younger. Heck, I still play it. It was loads of fun and had a killer soundtrack. The reason I mention it is because this game looks very similar. I see what Mark is saying about how they ought to make more of these games in a similar style. They already did it for the first few, why not continue? I don't have a PS4 but hey, if they released an Ace Combat on it that didn't suck, I might just be inclined to buy one.
Lord Karnage, please please please download and play Ace Combat Infinity. Yes, there are flaws in the sortie fuel system, but it takes all the great missions and aspects from the series, presents it in beautiful HD with classic controls and feeling, none of the Assault Horizon DFM annoyance, or the flips and annoyances of Assault Horizon Legacy.
While I like the 5th game better for the huge plane selection and story, Ace Combat 4 had a better flight model. It was still an arcade flight game, but the planes handled more like real planes. This game is the reason I ran around with toy airplanes as a kid screaming "Mobius 1 fox two!!!" - Oh wait, I still do that. :p
You know, the new games aren't terrible, but I really want them to go back to Strangereal. Also, why the hell has Mobius 1 never had another appearance in Canon as a full game? It would be so awesome to either be him again or fight along side him.
this game is freaking awesome, I bought it for my cousin and 3 years later I got it from him as a trade I could not believe how amazing this game was!!!! the greatest ace combat ever, I just loved the story and the way it was shown I cannot believe Ace Combat is fucking COD with planes today, wtf !!!!!
i loved this game but i have to say my all time favorite arcade airplane fighting game was aero fighters assault for the n64 i really hope nintendo makes a new one just like the n64 version. the first was fun as well
The game is awesome, but the bad thing about it is that the MiG-31 Foxhound is not in the game. The MiG-31 is one of my favorite planes in the Ace Combat series other than the F-14 and the Su-35 and Su-37. I also like the F/A-22, F/A-18 and the MiG-29. This is a good game, but my personal favorite in the entire series is Ace Combat 5.

Lol... I still remember the entire sound track for every level.
It's one of the greatest games of all time.
Mission 8 shattered skies is one of the best missions of all time. It’s one big dog fight ad that is the essence of ace combat
It's a crime that there still isn't an HD trilogy re-release
Maybe its the HD remakes that steal the soul and sacrecy of stuff.
@@guilhermecaiado5384 I would like to actually be able to play the games on modern hardware though. Its my childhood game so that would be amazing. The plot is actually Ace combat's Strongest asset. I really do hope you're joking.
+Tommy Som Well, everyone has their preferences with the story I guess. But I do agree about the gameplay.
I agree with you, being that I fly in real life, and I've always played flight sims, Ace Combat gameplay really isn't that great. Hands down the best Ace combat. The music, the FMV scenes, the amazing combat, those final missions..... Damn what a game.
"Burning people with monsters, and cutting them in half."
Definitely needs to be put on a shirt.
I would imagine that is Lord Karnage's motto. His likeness would appear on the back of the shirt.
OldsXCool holy shit i cant believe no ones done that yet
Ace Combat 4, Ace Combat 5, & Ace Combat Zero are the Holy Trinity of Ace Combat games
This was the first PS2 game that I owned. The first one I played, however, was Shinobi.
I miss this game so much. Watching this video gave me so much nostalgia, that I'm thinking about plugging my PS2 back in to play this game...
Ace combat 7 is way better in all ways
Great to see you back on YT, Mark.
CGR gives me that tingly feeling which I like a lot.
Ahhh, I so miss watching your reviews!
The way this game used the Dualshock 2 pressure sensitive buttons was AMAZING!
This game is amazing. I just learned how to play discs on an emulator. XD

Serpico's Beard Try switching over to openGL(software) in the graphics options of PCSX2. Thats the only way i could run it.
Ok cool i'll give that a try thanks.
Serpico's Beard Any luck?
Absolutely stellar game part of an amazing trilogy of PS2 titles. I can't express my love for AC4, 5, and 0 enough. Here's hoping for AC7 and an HD collection on PS4!
I like the way you think!
+Citizen Kane It has to happen Mr Lovecraft
My favorite game of all time
Damn, you dont play much games then
This was the first game I played in the AC series back in the day, so this review brought back alot of PS2 nostalgia. I loved the art in the cut scenes!
This game has one of the greatest final levels of all time.
@Martin Green I've just picked this game back up a few months ago and cried when the credits rolled. Twice. That's just how much I love this game
Ah, PS2 games from 2001, just grabbed Red Faction the other day because of an awesome review of Mark's extolling its awesomeness! The system works Mark!
Loved the music in this game and ace combat shattered sky's and Star Wars rouge squadron 3 are my favorite flight games
Ace Combat 4 was as essential as bread and butter.
I'm playing this game right now, enjoying it a lot
Hello! Will you start doing more classic game room reviews? I really do miss them.
Why CGR! Why are you so good? Why is there so much great content! Ill never get my homework done now.
Then but a book:)
Funny how the whole game people are cursing during combat and it's rated E
Dam... Remember my farther playing this when it came out. Still have in the basement with some other ps2 titles.
If you love the way this game looks check out Ace Combat Infinity. Its alot like Ace Combat 4 and they brought most of the music back. The only problem is that its a PS3 exclusive.

I loved this game, I loved the gameplay, and I loved the narrative style / cut scenes.
It always sounds like Mark begins the video with, "Banished from earth-plastic game room broadcasts." Fix it, Mark.
There's nothing to fix if you can't hear it correctly.
Baires Moreno
I hear it correctly. It's just that the emphasis and diction he uses garbles it a little, along with his breathless pace.
***** I can make out Classic with no problem. Weird.
***** It's just you, buddy. I can make out every word just fine.
Totally agree!
hmmm..weird, I feel like I've seen this review. Is it one of the ones you added on your website back when you left TH-cam.
One of my favorite PS2 titles.
I love this game......just found it today at a comic book store for $4 ......flying the blackbird over the water with the rooster tails blazing. Feeling like Clint Eastwood in fire fox 🔥
I still play that game up 2 this very day. I even know the gameplay walkthrough 4 this, I just have 2 make game FAQ 4 it.
I like how the aircraft had different abilities. Some turn tighter, some fly higher, some fly faster, and for the most part they matches the ability to the reputation of the aircraft. Not exactly but at least wasn't in a tomcat and stalling at 30,000 feet.
a lot of people here trash talking assault horizon
Both games are very good
I love the entire series
No classic game room... thank YOU!
I'm glad a reviewer appreciates true arcade flight combat gameplay unlike assault horizon. That DFM ruined what made ace combat good
Based Mark continuing to lay the smack down on Assault Horizon
Man, I'd pay a TON of money for an HD collection of 4, 5, and Zero on PS3/4. Ace Combat deserves nothing less.
My favorite game ever. Ace Combat 5 too. Fucking incredible.
Ace combat 5 was the best imo, 4 was still a great game though
Wait that paintjob on the F15 at the end of the video... I's Cipher's from Ace Combat Zero! OMG! It's like a past cameo of a future game!... (Or something like that.)
My childhood...

Have you tried over g on the xbox 360? It's an old game but a great combat flight sim. Less arcadey than ace combat but still fun.
Great review, but I would like to point out that you don't fly for Osea in AC4, you fly for Osea in AC5. In AC4, you fly for ISAF (Independent State Allied Forces).
You fly in the continent of Euseia.
Patrick Parrish Actually, the continent is called Usea. Erusea was the enemy nation that had ISAF cornered at North Point.
Usea people, you fight for Usea which is a nation that is part of the ISAF
Check an ace combat map.
YES!! This game is my childhood!!

My older brother mistakes the title as "Acecombatoy." He didn't realized it has "04" and there's a few mm spacing between Ace and Combat and 04
Ace Combat Infinity! The graphics of Assault Horizon, but the mechanics of early Ace Combat games! Also Free to Play!

Funny, I watched your previous Ace Combat reviews yesterday...
How come no 2 player vids ?!!
This was my favorite ps2 game. The story is really great.
A classic Ace Combat on PC, PS4 and X1 would be cool!
Still one of my favorite ps2 games.
Nige golden axe beast rider review shout out... Been waiting for one
I know everyone hates Assault Horizon, but I personally love it. :D
i do too.
Same.
@@TeddXplosion Same.
My first PS2 game.
....But do they transform?
This guy's from Hope, Idaho? The same Hope, Idaho that let loose the virus in Prototype? O.o

This one had a really stirring theme. "Razgriz" or something
I never played the classic Ace Combats but I played and like the demo for assault horizon and am really enjoying the free Ace Combat INFINITY on PS3
About Time!!
You know, the new games aren't terrible, but I really want them to go back to Strangereal. Also, why the hell has Mobius 1 never had another appearance in Canon as a full game? It would be so awesome to either be him again or fight along side him.
Never got to play 4 but I played 5 and zero and loved them
4 and 5 were the best in the series. 4 made me feel like an ace but five made me feel the consequences of war.
is better than alot of this games they got for ps4
This generation doesn't know much about the LCD games(I wish they did). Those games were awesome, portable, and inexpensive.
this game never gets old never
this game is freaking awesome, I bought it for my cousin and 3 years later I got it from him as a trade
I could not believe how amazing this game was!!!! the greatest ace combat ever, I just loved the story and the way it was shown
I cannot believe Ace Combat is fucking COD with planes today, wtf !!!!!
Lmfao!!
i loved this game but i have to say my all time favorite arcade airplane fighting game was aero fighters assault for the n64 i really hope nintendo makes a new one just like the n64 version. the first was fun as well
MY FAVOURITE WAS AC2 AC4 AC5 AND THE INFINITY
The game is awesome, but the bad thing about it is that the MiG-31 Foxhound is not in the game. It's funny because he pronounced Usea as "Osea," since Osea is one of the main countries in Ace Combat 5.
Of course, it would be nice if there were more of it, but that goes for any good game
Loved this game
Cool review but Assault Horizon is also pretty good!.
That was the first game I ever played on console aka my old ps2
You shouldn't have blown off the story. Yeah sure the gameplay is why we play it but the story is great.
