I would say you never know what to expect. Some women are bed ridden for half the pregnancy, some are still riding their bicycle. Some babies sleep and are happy to be in a carrier while you paint, some keep you up all night for three years so you become an exhausted zombie and can't stay awake enough to concentrate. Some infants have special needs and demand more than others. If you have a difficult pregnancy or baby, know you may need a longer break, but the you WILL paint again. When my baby was born until 12 months, I painted a little while she napped. When she was awake, she would not go in a carrier, but would not let me put her down. I had to hold her while rocking or walking constantly. She woke many times a night. I was tired and felt like I had my hands tied. I had so much creativity in me I could not get out except for her one hr naps. I could not paint again till she was 7. During those years, I was discouraged and depressed wondering who I was. It was hard because I did not know how long it would last. Now I would give the advice to just enjoy motherhood and know your time to paint will come when it does, but that it will come. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who can paint right through pregnancy and all the years of your child's life. I guess I am saying go with the flow and that you are still a real person living a spiritual and meaningful life even if creativity may be stifled for a while.

This is so true, everyone’s experience is different. I was bedridden due to hyperemesis gravidrium most of my first pregnancy, and had a long recovery from an emergency c-section due to the placenta failing. My muscles had atrophied and I felt so weak. It was a very disempowering, terrifying, and depressing experience. I didn’t at all feel the empowerment they spoke of in this show. I felt like all my unfinished paintings from a year before were mocking me.
But I did learn about having grace with myself. And yes, you will paint again. You will find your identity again. That baby will sleep eventually.
Currently painting while pregnant with #2! This time has been so much better.

It wasn’t until after I had my children that I learned I wanted to be an artist. It feels crazy since I already have a stable career and have 2 kids. But being an artist is not something I can ignore. Thanks for this video, made me feel less alone.

Loved this video❤ The number 1 piece of advice I always give artist mothers is to create with your kids. Set them up with their own little easel and palette or put a table cloth down and let them create next to you. Also, When my daughter was a baby I would put her in a wrap and have her nap on my chest while I painted at the easel. Now she’s in the young artist program at 9 years old! Best of luck with your baby Dimitra! You will love Motherhood. You will absolutely know the magic of creating life and seeing the work of God. There is no other feeling like it!❤✨

May I ask a question as to what she does now when you are painting? Does she go to school or is she home schooled? When do you paint? I home school my almost 10 yr old and have to really focus on what I am painting. Having her there can break my concentration with all the questions and look at me mom statements. I hope that makes sense...lol Thank you.

This was such an interesting episode. I have been painting so much since having my baby. He is a year now and in this past year, I have grown so much artistically. I have known how I want to paint for years, but now I have really had a breakthrough. Giving birth really made me realize that I can do anything❤

I can totally relate to the "blank white paper" experience ! I remember when I was 4, I went to florida with my family, and my parents tried to find something for me to draw with, so they gave me a block of printer paper and colored pencils, and I remember being so happy about it ! It was the best surprise they could have done, even better than a trip to Florida haha !

I'm so happy to have come across this video. I didn't paint or really create for about the first 5 months of motherhood. Around that time is when I "came up for air" and started painting again. It's true, I'm a much better mother because I paint and make time for myself. I feel like a came back to myself and it's so lovely. Thank you to all for sharing your experiences. ❤

Thank you for this video. This is what I needed as an artist. Being a good mother does not mean you have to be 100% mentally and physically present all the time with your kids. Being a good mother nowadays means that you are a good provider, nurturer, and teacher too. Kids grow so what will happen to their mom if their mom does not have their own career when they grow old. They can't just depend on their children to support them or their husbands especially if their husbands can't provide well enough either.

Thank you so much for this discussion. I am an aspiring artist and I have a toddler, and I can definitely identify with art bringing me back to myself. I loved to hear you all talk about working as a mom in such a positive way. I think there are probably a lot of messages out there that shame women for working while also having children. Or at the very least minimize the need for doing anything other than mothering. I once expressed discontent with only mothering, and family tried to make me feel better by saying things like “but you are doing important work!” I liked when Dimitra said they are equally as important. Thanks again.

I’m commenting a lot here. I give my kids paint and they paint while I paint , I keep my things up high and paint on a counter so they can’t touch

As a new mom, the best thing I did for my family was hire someone to clean the house every week or every other week. I couldn't afford daycare in the beginning, and having a housekeeper helped deflate any resentment between my husband and kids.

My daughter is turning 1.5 in November, and I still haven't found a balance... I want to do art so bad, I miss it dearly and I used to draw every day, but I was so sick when pregnant and it's like my art ended. She's veeery clingy and needy, like barely lets me leave when she's sleeping sometimes she'll wake up as soon as I'm gone and immediately cry (STILL!) and I can't afford a nanny and my husband works full time to pay for us. I have kinda had to cut art out just to keep the house clean and not listen to screm-crying constantly.

Dimitra: You should try Chill Lofi Beats. There are lots of playlists. Just calm melodic music. Sometimes a vague voice in the distance. After I found that, I can not listen to anything else. :-) This one is a good example of the music: Voyage to Nowhere ☁ Chill Lofi Beats(here on youtube).

How can parents who rely on having a full weekend to paint find that time when they have full time jobs during the week?
i would really appreciate even more explanation about how to have real time to paint with a 1-3 year old around. I hear too many horror stories about moms who can’t even have 10 minutes a day to themselves- even long after age 3! And especially if they have a second baby within those 3 years. No mom can even be sane with just less than hour a day to do Anything outside parenthood. And waiting until kids are like 4 and in school to get your identity back can’t be healthy. Unless regular sitters and daycare is the answer, but that also depends if you work from home or have a regular office job with just the weekend to paint where you can have half a day or more to paint

I don’t have a sitter and I don’t do daycare . I have two girls aged four and two and I’ve nursed four years day and night straight. I have no family here I have a husband but he works a lot. I cook three meals sometimes more a day, from scratch I garden and homestead. I’ve got chickens and dogs I spin a lot of plates - I also do cloth diapers and I haven’t slept in four years. I am fine. It’s not easy but I paint everyday (or a couple hours at night before bed) you just make it work . I will say, I don’t need to work so I am home full time so that may make a difference. I do homeschool in the mornings idk it just always works out it’s not a horror story for me

I have 2 toddlers. I trained them to sleep at the same time which wasn't easy. So I have 1-3 hours to do my art when they sleep during the day. But I mostly use this time to sleep myself 😆 Right now I have a table in their room and paint when they play. It 5-15min until something happens, they need me, I need to cook etc. Then 5-15min again. I get some stuff done like that. But I can't hide my media too far, so they find it often and decorate the walls with my Copics, throw watercolor pans into the water jar or something similar. It's frustrating but if I need something done I have the ability.
