thank you for sharing this amazing recipe and your story... food always bring people together. I am going to try this for my Zimbabwean husband... loved it.
Watching your video I realized how much I miss home, can’t wait to pay back to my culture for raising a women out of a lost girl. Loved your recipe and how you kept considering other people. My grandmother did that. It breaks my heart that sometimes she wouldn’t eat much to make sure everyone else ate. As the little one out of all my cousins and sister leaving in our house I didn’t have a big voice to stop it but the little one I had my grandma always heard it. I don’t know you by i fell in love with you🙂😇
So great to see fellow Zimbabweans cooking on TH-cam. Just one hint, if I may, washing meat actually increases the bad bacteria and therefore increases chances of food poisoning. Just thought I would share ;)
Please, what kind of oil was used traditionally, instead of the sunflower oil, Maryann? I am convinced it is not as healthy as coconut oil, natural palm oil, and olive oil, that is why I am asking. Thanks for the recipe! Do you ever put hot chilis and garlic in it also?
There is no traditional oil used, it is just the oil available. When i cook this, i use olive oil rather than sunflower oil. Cooking the meat does work better with sunflower oil, but you can substitute this for a healthier option
+Julie S We typically use sunflower or vegetable oil. As the other poster mentioned, olive oil could be used as a substitute. We don't cook with palm oil in Zimbabwe, although I'm sure this could also be used, but like coconut oil, would likely alter the taste to something not traditional to us. I'm also not convinced palm oil is healthier as it is very high in saturated fat. Chilli and garlic would be a lovely addition, I add garlic occasionally for a kick I'd add fresh or powdered chilli.
+MizzAshii2; Julie S In the low income area where I grew up the majority of people would use lard which they referred to as Holsom or simply "dripping" for cooking as it was cheaper than vegetable oil and without refrigerators, it had a better shelf life.
steve robinson Really? Thanks for letting me know. But doesn't lard/dripping clog one's arteries? When I was young my mom sometimes used Holsom but I havent used it as an adult because I thought that it would increase my cholesterol levels compared to say canola or olive oil. Do you know how lard/dripping might be considered a healthier option? Doesnt it "solidify" inside our bodies?
of course in Zimbabwe you would use mazola (corn) oil and rape for the vegetable. Not so much water, so when you mix with the sadza its firmer and delicious.

all the women in my family spoil you silly I miss them all my aunties and grandmothers will be fighting to feed me and my brothers the best feeling ever
canola oil or any seed or vegetable oil is the worst thing you can use as it is high in Omega 6 which causes inflammation in the body, which leads to diabetes and cancer, arthritis and you name it! Use oils such as Coconut or Palm oil that is totally UNREFINED, cold pressed and organic! That will be so good for the whole body, heart and blood! iIt lowers inflammation and gives the body protection against disease. Olive oil is good but shouldn't be heated or cooked, only use it raw. Take care and research your oils, but if Lard is from clean pork it is still far superior for the health to any processed oil! Thanks!

+Sue Ridder Funny thing is that scientists are now saying lard or dripping is the healthier option.
