I'm on my second DRZ (it's the same exact year and color scheme, 1st bike was a 2001 S model) and they are great bikes. It'll do just about anything you ask it, I've taken mine on 300+ mile day trips, I've beaten the shit out of it running 75+mph on a 13 hour trip in 113 degree heat, taken weekend trips across the state of Texas on it, I have gear to camp off of mine, I've stunted it a little, used it as a commuter and a grocery getter and there is practically nothing it won't do.
Would highly recommend you get a set of case savers on there, if you drop it without them and your shifter punches a hole in the case you're gonna have a bad time. Get yourself a pair valve block off plate for when you do the 3x3, jet kit and exhaust. As far as exhausts go, I have the fmf q4 on mine, had the yoshi rs3 on the old one, and if I had to do it all again I'd get the rs2. The q4 is nice, especially if you actually ride enough to get annoyed by a loud exhaust but the build quality is just not as good as yoshimura and it takes longer to get the q4.
If you don't know about the DRZ400 companion app, it's a super nice reference to have on your phone for maintenance and it's free. Scott from Link's Garage on youtube has better maintenance videos than anybody else around
Hope something in here is useful for you, cheers!

This was a super helpful read, thank you!! I was looking into the Barkers a bit because i had seen he (Links) had went that route but for an extra $100 it may be worth buying the Yosh! Is there any good reputable brands selling case savers for these things? I'm definitely learning as we go but I'm excited to dive into a new platform!

@@NoersOn2 the go-to for case savers used to be Thumper Talk, from what I understand they briefly stopped making them (I think?) but i'm pretty sure you can find them again now with a google search. Do yourself another favor and use *clear* RTV when you install them so if a little bit of it is visible it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. Also if you didn't know this, there will be a small, sharp ridge on your factory shift lever. Sand that guy down a little
I've seen MRD and Barker's exhausts in person and the quality seems fine on them, but honestly having a little bit quieter of an exhaust is slept on imo. You can get away with a lot more hooligan shit, have less angry interactions with folks, less time talking to cops and less annoyance on long rides with a little bit quieter of a pipe and I think the yoshi is the best of all worlds. It looks good, the quality is fantastic, it isn't super loud at idle or lower rpm but it sounds great when you get into it. It's the goldilocks pipe for the DRZ i think

@@StreetbeatDesigns67 i saw people saying they weren't being made anymore as well in some forum somewhere unfortunately, I'll see if maybe i can't track something down on eBay. But, noted! That definitely makes me just want to spend the extra money on the yoshi, quieter is definitely not a bad thing haha, it's nice!
