I cant afford that guitar but I am going on a 3 month guitar building course with Crimson next year and a double cut LP was going to be my second guitar after a set neck Tele but this is just ripe for copying!
I bought one of these in college in 1988. $100 (the headstock had been broken off but well repaired). Owned it for about 25 years (rarely played it) before giving it away. Gibson Dirty Fingers sounded pretty cool, but the odd backward angle of the neck relative to the body was weird - seemed more extreme than a LP or SG.
Disappointed that it's not a prototype? Well Trogly, I can fix that for you! I have a particular set of skills. Take that back plate off and leave me and my Sharpie alone with it and when you come back, voila, it will now say "ES 335 Prototype". Of course, I charge quite a bit for my services...

Yeah, fresh stiff speakers. IMHO, I think the only way to get a Marshall to sound like a Marshall is to crank it up to about 3/4 volume. Most people are unable to crank up a 20W amp to full power in a home type setting, especially if you have children and a wife.

When I bought my first very serious expensive professional guitar. The lowest priced Gibson was the Paul. they wanted like 1200 for an SG in 1979. So I took a different path and bought a Hamer Sunburst in 1980 brand new from the back street music store. I think I won. In my older age I have considered buying a les paul just because. It left my bucket list when I bought my first Hamer.I traded that guitar in for a Hamer Standard the following year when he had one in. Still have it and it's worth 5 digits to the right person. It's the most collectible model Hamer hand crafted. I have been considering buying a Les Paul lately. Certainly not on my bucket list. I have never owned a Gibson. I played quite a few. that guitar looks like a Hamer which was obviously part of their target but head stock has no comparison. The Hamer Special and Standards sported Shaler mini tuners and likened a les paul jr but the Sunburst had a carved maple top. They were and still are Les Paul killers but rare as USA hand made production went out a few decades ago and license was sold.
You’re way off on the headstock inlay. It goes way back to the 1930s. It’s was used on some archtops, like one variation of the L-10. Norm’s actually has a good 1937 example with it right now.
Thanks for sharing - though this particular headstock veneer was most likely initially intended for a Heritage unless there was another model in the acoustic world that used it in the late 70s
2:30 With walnut going at 12$-14$ per board feet these days, and that today's crappy walnut, not the old growth that Gibson probably used, Right off the bat, just in lumber cost is enough to make those unique guitars sell at huge primium.
Okay, this is probably a model that I would want if I wanted a vintage class guitar again. That's saying a lot, considering I would be loyal to the traditional thinline rendition.
About 10 years ago I made one of these guitars out of black walnut with a book-matched black walnut veneer which gave it some visual character. It is possibly one of my worst built guitars but she plays and sounds like a demon. What I really wanted was a "The SG" in walnut and now I have one of those which I bought off you! The walnut is so different on the SG, do you have any idea what type of walnut Gibson used on those guitars?
The last 4 digits on the number are the last four from an old phone number we had in the 70's and 80's. a push-button wall phone with a 20 ft coiled cord..so my sister can take it into the bathroom for an hour.
I still think its supper cool to have a 335-S with that headstock and the Block inlays Austin. Its a one of a kind. You Should keep it for the museum for sure. Guitar playing is still progressing. That mute strum thing your doing is not as easy to learn as some might think. Thanks again, enjoyed the video
Literally just had my new guitar delivered. It's an ES 175 copy with 2 vintage style humbuckers, gold hardware, full binding and a Florentine cutaway in Arctic White. Absolutely stunning guitar. This is my dream guitar. Always wanted one since I started playing 25 years ago. Blown away.

I never knew Gibson made some solidly body 335s!? Whoa! Austin I would not consider this guitar or a loss but a cool and rare find. If it is indeed a parts guitar at least it was put together at the factory and done with care buy a skilled worker. And those cool inlays on the headstock as well. I would say you definitely have a very unique piece there and one that is practically a one of one guitar!
I own one of these, a 1981, in Silverburst and mint condition. Paid $500 for it new back then at a small retail shop going out of business and it's worth over $3,600 now. :)
When other channels say they took a "gamble" it usually means they spent about $200 on a Chinese job.. but you're like the Elon Musk of guitar risk-taking.

Fairly certain it’s not an acoustic neck, the neck blanks are drastically different, I suppose you could Frankenstein one but what’s the point, more likely they just used the inlays
Never liked those position markers. They turn me off to any to any guitar that has them. I make an exception for Les Paul Customs, but not too crazy about them either.
