I am a poet, wanting to get my poetry into print. I’ve written 300 since I began in 2015, one is 66 verses long. My style is what I would describe as “classical romance”. Most are scripture/Bible-based. Your video was very helpful. I had been thinking about a chapbook for my longest poem, and with your information, I’m convinced more than ever that that’s the avenue I’ll take to begin. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos-chapbook is next. And, for the record, I’m 84 years old. (I also text in full sentences, using proper punctuation.)😊 Blessings!

Thank you so much for this video. Publishing was and still is a dream of mine. I even have almost 90 poems on standby. But it has taken a back seat to my novel. Apparently they at least have a chance at making money. Uhhh! So I designed my novel to include poetry. It accrued to me to pour the pain and reticule of being a poet into my main character’s character ark. Praise to poets everywhere.

I've recently begun to write again. I've always had a profound interest in poetry and writing song lyrics but have never put myself out there. I honestly have no idea where to begin as far as exposing my work to the world. I wrote nearly six pages yesterday. Thanks for the advice and best of luck to anyone out there who's trying to get their thoughts into paper and their paper full of thoughts out into the world and into many people's hearts and minds.

This is honestly very helpful. My goal is to become a poet, Initially I started writing poetry as a way to express myself. In time it became my passion. I've been writing poetry for about two years now, and I've been working on bettering my poems. I didn't get to finish high school, and a lot of what I know about poetry has been self taught. I deal with pretty bad depression, which makes writing daily a problem for me. The other issue I've found is that all of my poetry is free-form, and a lot of my work can be dark. I've found that trying to publish poems that are a bit suicidal or even dark can be a lot harder than I thought. Trying to find an audience to read my work hasn't been easy either. My goal for the future, is to hopefully get my name out there within the next 5 years. My pin name is Dazai Nevermore, and I chose that name because I was named after the "Raven" By Edgar Allen Poe and I also really like Osamu Dazai.

I self-published a book of poetry in 1997. In 2013, I re-published the book through print on demand. My last poem was completed in 2000, which was added to the revised edition of the book. I haven't written another poem since. There are 6 other poems, written in 2000, that were to be the beginnings of a second poetry book. Also, the 2013 edition was attributed to a Sociology professor, by the same name, of Edinburgh University.

@@Reedsy Question : I've compiled around 150+ pages of my poetry and am looking to get it published. I've looked around at small presses and will submit sometime in September. Will they simply *not* read it when they see the length of the book? Is cutting down on length something I should be thinking about when I begin editing and choosing for the cut?

I'm completely new to poetry, and was introduced to it through a creative writing course, that I'm taking right now. Originally, I took the course to begin writing a novel. However, once I reached the poetry half of the course, I saw just how much potential poetry had to summarize my thoughts beautifully. Rather than writing an academic essay on this or that, I can easily write a Sestina on it, and largely communicate my thought effectively to most people.
I have a 100+ page word doc containing my philosophical thoughts on life, and finally, I have a medium to begin communicating them to others.
While I might finish my novel some day, I'm now largely obsessed with poetry hahaha

    I have a question.
If the publisher asks for your whole manuscript should you send them that without copywriting the work 1st? Please clarify.

When you submit a collection to a publisher what exactly are they expecting? A disc,a word processed manuscript? Something already polished ready for printing? My friend sent a manuscript in on a disc, which someone else had typed for her with double spacing. The book was published straight off the disc, double spacing, spelling errors and all! As this is a first attempt I want to avoid these types of mistakes. The only time I was published in a magazine it was in a hand written letter.

Typically, when you submit a collection, the work should be as polished as you can possibly make it!

    No Fault
    Travis of Bickley
There is no fault in our stars...
The fault is the infinite chasm
    between their silent twinkling!
But even that silence is only in
    that infinite stretching distance.
    For once proximity is breached,
    angelic choruses sing the souls
of all of us who speed pass at
the velocity of thought. So that,
in those arias sounding, the voice of God can be discerned for what
it truly is...The hot, roaring, breath
of love cleansing away all that has no sound, but that holy awareness
    of that one true thing.
I am an old man. I have written poems, prose, essays, thoughts, epiphanies, and ideas for most of my life.
I find it so easy to write now using my MEMO APP on my phone, because I seldom lose my train of thought or essence of the piece.

To publish a poetry book, let's start the quest,
With verses that flow, let's put them to the test.
It's more than just words, it's a dream to fulfill,
So here are the steps, and I'll share the skill.
Step One: Write with Heart and Soul
Before you can publish, you must write with zeal,
Pour emotions on paper, let your thoughts reveal.
Craft verses that sing, and stories that entwine,
For the heart of your book is the content you'll define.
Step Two: Edit with Care and Precision
With the ink now dry and the poems complete,
It's time to edit, make each stanza neat.
Check for errors, polish the lines that gleam,
    For a well-edited book is a poet's dream.
Step Three: Find a Publisher or Self-Publish
Now you face choices, it's a crucial stage,
To find a publisher or self-publish with rage.
Traditional houses or indie route you choose,
Each path has its merits; don't be quick to lose.
Step Four: Prepare a Manuscript and Cover
For traditional publishing, a manuscript's key,
Format it well, let your words be set free.
Design a cover, captivating and bright,
For it's the book's face that will catch their sight.
Step Five: Seek Reviews and Endorsements
To build anticipation, gather some praise,
Send copies for reviews, let the critics appraise.
Authors and poets who admire your style,
Their endorsements will make readers smile.
Step Six: Plan a Launch, Promote Your Book
It's time to unveil your book to the world,
Plan a launch party, let your flag be unfurled.
Promote on social media, create a buzz,
For marketing is vital; it's not just a plus.
Step Seven: Distribute and Share Your Work
With the book in print and the world at your door,
Distribute to bookstores, online, and much more.
Share readings and signings, connect with your crowd,
For your poetry's voice should be heard, clear and loud.
Step Eight: Keep Writing, Keep Dreaming
    Publishing's a journey, not just a start,
Continue to write from the depths of your heart.
With each new poem penned and each page that's turned,
Your poetry legacy will forever be earned.
So, to publish a poetry book, my dear friend,
Follow these steps from beginning to end.
With passion and purpose, your words will take flight,
In the world of poetry, you'll shine ever so bright.

Hi. I don't know if you answer comments on 3 year old videos. But I really would like to know if you publish one of your poems in a magazine, can you publish it in a book later? None of my poetry is published because I am afraid of individual publishers stealing or taking the "rights" to a poem I give them. It's the same concern with social media. Thanks.

Thanks for this video! I find it so helpful, especially your information about small presses. I'm never sure how to gauge how legitimate small presses/ online journals are; it seems like there's so many. Do you know of any way to tell a quality online journal/ small press from say a vanity press?
You mentioned you don't write/read much poetry. If you're ever interested in reading/performing poetry I did a video on it on my channel a while back,; I used to run an open mic/poetry event. :) Thanks again for the content!

Here's some information on how to evaluate a publisher and look for scams! blog.reedsy.com/scams-and-publishing-companies-to-avoid/
It also helps to look up the books the press has published to get an idea of how legitimate they are.
