    Hi loves! This video is a combination of a full talk through as well as little things I learned while fumbling through the self publishing process last year. My book was a poetry book and I went through Ingramspark, although quite a bit of the advice here is general and I think it might be especially helpful to first time authors or fellow antsy perfectionists who would like to hear of a genuine experience self publishing.
    We are going to go over pretty much everything, from perspective to have going to the process, expectations & examples, to gathering your poems (if poetry,) & organizing them, formatting your interior, creating a cover, using illustrations, my Ingramspark issue / experience, marketing yourself, presale information, pricing your book, and even self distribution info.
    Something I didn’t go over for whatever reason was editing! Please make sure your book gets edited as well!
    Buckle up! Time stamps are below for your convenience :)
    TIME STAMPS
    1:14 Finish your book!
    2:00 My writing background at the time of publishing & to be careful when you look at other authors for comparison. ( be fair to yourself)
    4:21 the gathering process & your books length
    5:51 expectations and variety in examples (poetry books)
    9:41 organizing your pieces & formatting
    12:16 interior detail / theme / design
    13:11 Illustrations (if applicable)
    16:25 Ingramspark doesn’t take T3 fonts... flatten your cover
    18:13 picking your publisher
    19:38 my issue / experience with ingramspark
    23:00 marketing your book
    24:07 presale info
    25:09 pricing your book
    28:15 self distribution info & experience

    My first book was over 300 poems. But the thing was it was poetry I wrote through high school. I wanted all those poems in one place. But moving forward my books will only contain 35-45 poems each.

      Why is will you only publish 35 to 45 poems for each book?

    Love this video, thank you for sharing! Do you still have the 50 poem books that were misprinted? If so, as an artist, you can paint the covers/backs of them. You can market them as limited edition, hand painted, signed copies and sell them for more. I got this idea from when I ordered samples of shirts to sell, and they were misprinted. I added hand painted embellishments to the shirts, then sold them!

    Thank you for this great video ! I use scrivener to write and organize my poems, I was fed up of having to copy paste and I love how this software allows me to click and drag to reorganize everything :) in my country, if you find an editor, you would get only about 8% of the price before taxes, which I think is a real roberry, hence why I think authors should more consider the self-publishing path, not even mentioning the very low sells that are being recorded for poetry. As if everyone was thinking that poets had to share publicly everything on the internet, as if it wasn't a real book compared to fiction (this idea drives me nuts sometimes) ... I'm not looking to sell though, only to leave something behind the speed of time

    • @katrisharose
      @katrisharose  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi! So I don't have any experience using pages yet, but what I did was scan in my hand-drawn images on my printer/scanner (I just have a cannon printer/scanner combo,) and then I used the insert> insert image> upload image options on google docs. From there I moved and sized the images as needed, also went into the image options to mess with text wrapping. I hope that's helpful!
      Best of luck to you :)

    • @katrisharose
      @katrisharose  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lexis! So you don't have to self publish through amazon to be sold on their site, if that makes sense. IngramSpark (the self publishing service I used,) makes your book available through a variety of distributers- amazon included, who can pick your book up to sell from their store. So I am on Amazon the same way I am on Target, or Indie Books.
      I hope that helps! And thanks for watching :)

    how long did it take you to get your book ready like the writing + editing stage?

    • @katrisharose
      @katrisharose  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey there! The writing stage is hard to say because I was "writing" this book before I knew I was writing this book- it's a collection of writing over many years, I just cherry-picked some of my favorite pieces. It was a combination of combing through old writing and gathering what I wanted to include, as well as adding new pieces. It took about 9 months of work once I set my intention that I was going to create and publish a book. But everyone's process is different! Be patient with yourself and take as long as you need :)

  • @CC-br7ds
    @CC-br7ds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    how do you actually get the illustrations on your actual poem? How do you transfer it over it you're having an illustrator do it.

    • @katrisharose
      @katrisharose  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      whether the pics are your own or from an illustrator, you'd want them to be saved as separate/individual images and then I just added them to the books interior document. I have some images on the same page as words and some are on their own pages- upload and place the images where you want them and then change the image formatting to accommodate text on top, on bottom, tightly around the image., etc.

    i am auto-editing my poetry book at this point, it has more than 300 hundred poems (pages) and they are hand-picked..i am just so scared it won't sell because in my country being an author is rarer than rareness itself

      Good luck to you! I would advise getting yourself out there online as much as possible to reach a wider audience. And regardless of the sales turnout, I hope you are proud of your book and the accomplishment of self publishing! :)

      Copyright is not something I had to manually do anything about, Ingramspark automatically includes a copyright page within the book! I don't think you have to do anything additional there unless you have special circumstances/legal concerns. Sorry, I don't have more info than that!

    Hello
    I just wrote my first book and I plan on self publishing. Please I have a few questions, do I need to buy a copyright online and get an ISBN before self publishing ?
    And can I print it out without it being sent to me by Amazon ?

    • @katrisharose
      @katrisharose  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! The answers to your questions depend on who your publisher will be-
      If Amazon- I don’t think you need to get an ISBN in advance, I hear they actually have a built in option for them to purchase and connect an ISBN to your book
      If Ingram spark- yes, first, separately purchase an ISBN and bring that to their website.
      For your second question, I only know from my experience you would purchase a copy of your own book at the end of the process in order to see it physically. It would be at discounted, wholesale rate. (It cost me around ~$5 to buy one of my own books.
      As for Amazon, not sure because I did not use them. Sorry! Hope what I could answer was helpful! Good luck to you!

      And for the second question, I’m answering for what you’d do on IngramSpark

    I'm actually really surprised to hear that you make 5$ per book. I've seen a lot of author's only making like 2.50$. It's really sad, honestly.
