I am usually easily distracted when using TH-cam and often jump from video to video. However, I've just sat and watched a 44min video on dye and didn't once feel the need to look for something else. I like the way you present your videos and I always feel like I'm learning something. Thank you, and keep up the good work

I did my first sheath about 20 years ago. So with a piece of leather and a whole ton of guess work I develoeped my own way of doing things, including making a whole load of scrap. I still do the occasional sheath etc. and use the lessons I've learnt thru my mistakes over the years. Only just found you on the NET. Nice to hear a Brit voice, I'm a Brit whose been in Canada for 47 years.
THANK YOU for your video's, I've learnt so very much from you. My sheaths etc these days are pretty good, so I've been told. But after watching you my leather work in its entirety will improve immensely.

So I was given a a Tandy leather set as a housewarming gift and I'm in way over my head...
I've been watching tons of instructionals and came across yours...
    Truly, thank you!
So relatable and easy to follow.
My first major project, outside of practicing, is a wallet for the "gifter". Haha
I went to the Tandy company (which is 4 mi or so from where I live) and purchased an alphabet stamp set.
I have practiced dying the letters and needs tons more practice, needless to say.
    Keep the videos coming!

Thank you Ian. I have been working leather in my retirement and have developed something of a passion for it. Dyeing, colouring, and finishing are the areas I struggle with. This video has answered some questions and given me things to try. My big struggle is getting the colour even. And correcting it when it is not.
    Again, thank you
    Joe

Love how you explain in your videos
If it's possible I want to know the chem mixed and in which quantity it's done to get the product(dye)
I know it's base plus pigment maybe additive that gives that .but the exact chem names eludes me
It will be so helpful if you could help me with that.

I have heard that an advantage of using water based dye is that you can just dilute them with water, where as a dye reducer is needed for spirit based or oil based leather dye

Hi, I have an old black leather motorcycle jacket from the 50's that was my granddads. The leather is in great shape but it has some weird white specks on a few spots. It looks like the finish has rubbed off. I tried using shoe polish on the jacket. It made it nice and shiny but the spots are still there. Do you think it would be a good idea to try Fiebings black dye on these areas to touch it up or would it require me to do the whole jacket, which I really don't want to do. Thanks, all the best.

I know that you did this a few years ago but *thank you* for your time and work on this very informative video. This was _really_ excellent and I think answered most of my question. I loved you sense of humor through out the video. The one question I don't believe was answered was after dyeing both sides do you lay it on the table? hang it? lean it against something? or just not worry about it. :)
    Thanks again.
    Greg.

    • @Leodis.Leather
      @Leodis.Leather  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Greg Moore If I dye both sides I will tend to hang it up or prop it up against something, I very very rarely dye the back of the leather though as I don't find it necessary and it tends to over stiffen it. A lot of people wouldn't agree with me however :)

Hi Ian, I have a white coach bag (vintage) that has been scribbled with colour permanent marker pen by my child, colours such as pink, blue and green... I've wiped it as much as I could with acetone and deglazer, it's faded but I can still see the scribbles. What colour dye would you recommend I can use to cover it, so the marker doesn't come through? I would like to avoid black if possible and was thinking more like reds or browns but not sure if the marker could still be visible from underneath if the colour is too light. I'm not a professional, only trying to save my beloved vintage bag. Thanks!!

Hi Ian great videos, I'm just starting and wondering what the difference was between Antique and Dye. I recently tried to do a key fob and when it came to the resist and dye part the resist I felt went on really well I left it overnight and then applied a Tannery dye professional water based stain (Mahogany) however when I went to wipe the excess off, the blocked areas weren't so blocked and the dye had stained everything, it sort of attempted to block out the dye but no where near as good as in any video I've seen. Do you have any ideas? thank you Sean

You mentioned not to mix water/spirit based dyes with oil based dyes. would it be a problem if you used the thicker oil based dyes to paint the background and the design you have tooled onto leather and then when it has dried use the cheaper water/spirit based dyes to do the rest. My thinking is to save money using the cheaper dyes to do the larger areas of leather?

Ian, I've an old leather briefcase I've challenged myself to restore. The leather is dried out/hard/brittle, so I know that I'd need to make it supple before I replace the dry-rotted stitching. However, the briefcase also needs to be re-dyed, so my question is, make it supple first or dye it first?
Also, to make it supple, should I use Bick 4 Conditioner or neatsfoot oil?

No I still use pro oil dye, I do sometimes use a dye with finish mixed in but usually I don't as I like to tailor the finish to the indented use of the product and the premixed ones can limit what you can add on later.

Hey I just want to thank you for this video, I've really had a problem with figuring what dyes to use for a more professional look . this video was of tremendous help. you've won a subscriber.
I want to get my leather looking like they came from the medieval era and antique. Am I right to think Fiebings oil dyes is what I'm looking for?

Hey Ian, a question I am not getting answers to from professionals yet: I want to make leather items that will be worn on naked skin (imagine armbands). I also want to work as ecological as possible. Naturally I was driven to work with EcoFlo water based or Fiebing's institutional dyes, but they rub off terribly, plus stiffen the leather, plus are inconsistent. Oil based dyes - particularly if I dilute them, or combine with neatsfoot/olive oil - tend to leak oils+color too (but maybe I used excess). However how are they working on the human skin? Any experience there?
Any other ecological + skin-safe alternatives you know of?
Also, secondary question: I have issues with residue smell by both Eco Flo water based (not so bad after a week but still perceptible), EcoFlo oil - strong smell. Not to mention neatsfoot oil that smells like marrow bone or beef soup. In any case I have lost the natural smell of leather - that I like and was looking for preserving. What's your experience there?

If you are having all these issues I would suggest you buy some pre-dyed leather for these projects

probably sounds silly but can you dye a dark leather colour to a light colour?

Hello Ian...is it okay to lightly moisten a dry piece of leather prior to dyeing? I mean it makes perfect sense by loosening the fibers with water the leather would absorb the dye faster and deeper. What's your take on it? Thanks.

You can do this yes, some people do it all the time. It can help to get a more even coat on lighter colours. You can also apply a coat of neatsfoot then dye straight onto that as an alternative I don’t usually do that myself though.

Nope, its scaly and pretty much non porous, it also has a strong base colour.

You can’t dye leather white yourself really so no, if you need it then buy it in but it’s likely to be chrome tan only

I don't see Fiebing's Oil dye on their website or on the Tandy website. Did they stop making it or something?

Same thing today. They are not showing it. Saw a note that after Jan 1, 2007 it was banned in California. Walmart shows the black variety, did not look deeper.

Hello Ian...really enjoy your vids...tell me...I have a tooled belt that I want to dye and antique. Should I antique first then dye? By the way I'm dying the tooled area (basketweave pattern) black and the rest I'm antiquing Briar Brown. Will the leather still except the black dye even though it's been antiqued?

    • @Leodis.Leather
      @Leodis.Leather  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The antique usually has an acrylic finish mixed in so any other dyeing steps should be done prior to the antiquing

Hi thanks for the videos, they're very useful!I'd like to ask you one thing:I would like to dye some veg tanned natural color leather.I want to use the eco-flo products, which is the difference between the Leather dyes and the Professional line? They're both water based right? What I would do is applying the dye then let it dry and apply another coat just on edges to accent them, then applying resolene as a final step.Is it correct?
Thanks a lot for your help!

You are amazing. I've watched your video's but I haven't seen anything on softening leather. I tried the dip dye like this video but my leather became so very dry and hard. What would you recommend?

For Dip Dyeing why not use a 1Qt 1 gal or 2 gal Zip-lock bag AKA "Shake and Bake Baby" when you are done cut the corner of the bag and recover your Dye back into your bottle......

+Willow TheWisp I dread to think of the sort of mess you'd make it you dropped or cut a plastic bag with a gallon of dye in it! Feel free to do it yourself but it's not something I'd recommend.
