If you have a brown paper bag or brown package paper you can get good seams. Put the brown paper over the fabric where you want a crease and dampen it with a spray bottle (water) and iron/press over it. I was in the Navy and that is how I got sharp creases in my uniforms. The brown paper trick also works in reverse to remove a crease if you need to.
I really enjoy your tutorials! Your voice and manners are so relaxing and refreshing. Your cameraman does a great job with those closeups. A picture is with a thousand words…right? Keep the tutorials coming! Even though I have made quilts and have sewed for many years, you are reinforcing some some skills I sometimes forget! I have not made a quilt out of men’s dress shirts, but I am getting closer. Thanks for brightening my day!
Thank you, Sherry! 🥰❤️ The cameraman is also the lighting director and the producer and the editor...and also my husband! 😂🤩😍 I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos! Thank you for your kind words...it means a lot to me! 🥰
May I just say say the OCD side of me absolutely loves your colors of pencils separated by color. 😍😍. So enjoying this video series! You and the editor make a great team to bring smiles and teach.
How did I not find you earlier! My first quilt was using my husband dress shirts after he lost a lot of weight. He loves his quilt and I remember trying to find out if I was crazy to try that. However I didn’t want to spend huge dollars to try to make a quilt the first time. I figured I would donate them so nothing to lose. I will be busy watching all your videos because memory quilts from people’s clothes is what inspires me the most. Love the quilting with men’s dress clothes and thank you for sharing you knowledge on this. Love how much you enjoy this process. Thanks
Thank you, Jeanene! And how cool is it that you made a quilt from your husbands shirts!😍 I'm so glad you found me, btw! Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
Once again, Cathy.... Thank you. You are right up there with MSQC's videos (Missouri Star Quilt Company) which I've watched for years. I love to iron/press!
I just found your videos and I am so very happy I did. My father passed the day after thanksgiving and my sister and I want to make. Quilt out of his shirts and had no idea how. Finding you and these videos has given us both so much happiness just knowing we are going to be able to use his special shirts and hopefully one with his neck ties next. I love and enjoy you so much and your video guy! Thank you
I have watched you from day 1, and absolutely love and look forward to each and every single video! I'm a transplanted southerner to Michigan, and feel so much at home listening to you. I am also an experienced quilter, but am always open to learning more/better techniques (which I have with your videos). Your "OCD" is pleasantly familiar, as well. I'm constantly picking threads. 😁 Looking forward to ALL future videos!
Oh wow, thank you, Denese!! ❤️ I feel so humbled and honored that my experienced quilter viewers are watching the first quilt series! I feel the love and support! So thank you!! And yes, Lord, we compulsive pickers! 🤦🏻♀️😂🤷🏻♀️😱

Thank you, Robin! ❤️ all of you experienced quilters who are with me here, and watching the first quilt stuff anyway--all the love in my heart for your support! 🥰
Oh my goodness I wish I'd had these videos when I started - would have prevented so many mistakes! As for the ironing being a 50+ thing totally agree, I iron everything (I'm in that category too!) and my kids think I'm mad - they don't even own irons!!
Thank you, Sue!! ❤️🥰😊 That's part of what motivated this series--I wanted to include the info that I wish I had when I started, so that new quilters would start off with the knowledge we all need to do it well!
I'm not quite 50 yet but since I started working from home, I quit ironing everything except fabric. I have a couple extra irons and ironing boards so that I don't have to clean mine (and de-thread) before doing clothes.
I am so much enjoying these videos. I have quilted for decades along with my mom and sister, and have used men's shirts for a long time. But your smile and instructional methods are a joy to watch. Thanks for your efforts.
Love listening to your videos. You have a lovely calming voice. I have been quilting for 40 years, and listen to your whole show. I never thought to use mens shirts til I heard you discuss. I am still cutting and sorting 8 shirts. One quilt will be rail fence, another will be half square triangles. Thanks for the nudge to try this. I' m a fan of this now.
Thank you, Laura-what a wonderful compliment! ❤️🥰 And how fantastic! I love that you have found a new source of fabric and a “nudge” to try something new! I bet your quilts are gonna be amazing! 🤩🤓😊 Thank you so much for watching and commenting and supporting my channel! ❤️❤️❤️
For a quilt like the one in your example I like to sew it together with (I believe it was referred as) the webbing method. So you chain piece all your rows together without clipping the treads. So first take piece 1 and 2 of row A, then chain piece no. 1 and 2 if row B and proceed so till you are at the last row A. Then clip the thread and begin at first row A with adding piece 3... You finally have all your rows sewn together with attaching threads between them (no possibility to mix up rows :D). The ironing part is a bit fiddly then but for me fingerpressing is enough if it's all squares. I guess there is a maximum where this will not work pleasantly any more, but the 9x9 grid seems manageble. Although I quilt over 10 years already I also like watching your videos. They are relaxing and entertaining at the same time 😃
Thank you, Julia, for the excellent description of webbing! I will have to try it and see what I think about it!❤️ And thank you so much for watching and commenting and being here with me! I’m so glad you are enjoying my channel! 🥰😊❤️
I am old and used to iron (okay, you're right, I also "arn" despite having almost no tell-tale accent for most words), but kids these days are onto something. I have completely converted to running the dryer for a couple minutes or, better yet, racing to take things out while they're still warm and hanging or folding. And I think it's delightful how you're such a Renaissance woman! Throwing in music terms so casually like that--you know all the things! Great video. You keep hitting it out of the park.
Thank you so much, Steff! ❤️🥰 I don't know about Renaissance woman, but I am insatiably curious, love learning--and words--which means I have picked up quite the range of information over the years! (and I took classical piano for 13 years so there's that.) 😉
Great next steps. If it's over 4 inches and I'm matching seams I probably pin. With disabilities, the floor is not an option for a quilt sandwich. My plan is to use 2 x 6 foot market tables pushed together. I am going to need plenty more curved pins. I have made 2 x queen sized quilt tops and then got stuck. Plenty of time being used to practice all the other steps on small projects and perfecting the binding making process. Happy quilting 🇦🇺💜🇺🇲💚😊👍🖐
Anita thank you for these suggestions and also the reminder that not everyone can use the floor (for a variety of reasons!) ❤️ “Plenty of time” is something I need to hear, myself….no need to push ourselves beyond what we.can do! Thanks, as always, for your great comment and for your support! ❤️
You are such a great teacher, you take everything at a nice pace and show every small detail so that we dont miss anything important, so thank you very much for all of your dedication to the task, which, for a beginner must be quite daunting. I have done only a minimum of actual quilting in my lifetime, but you inspired me to make a lovely quilt out of dress shirts, which is currently at the quilting ladys' house. I had her put old sailing ships on my quilt, which is red, white and blue in colour. thanks again.....

First let me state that I have watched from the 1st episode and have enjoyed every bit. At 16:40 you stated to press row A to your left and row b to your right. I have a suggestion: why not turn row B 180 degrees and iron to the left, then turn back 180 degrees to place it on your stack? This would allow you to keep ironing to the left which is your default. You are so easy to listen to and watch. Keep up the great work!

But I wasn’t sure I could explain it well without it being more confusing than helpful! 😵💫and honestly I have done rows exactly that way, and then gotten all turned around and forgotten to rotate them when it was time to sew rows together! 🤦🏻♀️ But I do very much appreciate your comment, and I think it is a testament to how much we all care about quilting and each other…we want it to be as easy and simple and intuitive as possible and I LOVE that!! Thanks again for being a faithful viewer and thanks for your comment and I hope to hear more from you! 🥰🤓❤️
One note on painters tape: brand matters! I use it not only for layering but for marking grid lines to quilt. Recently I found it not sticking. Like at all! What I found is that you need Scotch blue original tape. It’s the one that feels slightly rough to the touch. It will stick to your fabric without leaving a residue. When used to mark grid lines you can even reuse it 3-4 times.
Good morning! I got antsy and finished my top yesterday. Need to press and I'm thinking of backing it with flannel. Was at a second hand store yesterday. No fun men's shirts. Lots of plaid but I have plaid here. Hubby made me a number of clippers from old stair railings when we remodeled the house. Use them lots.
Great job on explaining pressing versus ironing or "arning" as it's said around here. That's one thing I didn't know when I started. I'll start pinning my rows in the middle from now on too. Also when you showed the clapper I immediately thought of that commercial (clap on, clap off...) lol.
