Edgecam and a Spinner U1520 is my daily life but due to company licences I miss out on these 5 axis challenges, so jealous.
Thanks my man! It means a lot. I'm going to start on a few more videos but I'm going to try and give them a more cinematic feel, from reverse engineering (CAD), to programming and machining. Definitely going to need to step up my editing skills to achieve that. That spinner looks like a beast though! If you ever get the chance to take on 5 axis I highly recommend it. It adds so much more depth to the challenge of programming and also opens a lot of possibilities for optimization and just freedom to do what you want.
how do you like your spinner u1520? my firm is about to order one
I love it, it has a quick toolchange. The downside is the "rustlike" adhesive that accumulates on my HSK holders.
I'm clean and so is my toolbox but somehow I keep on cleaning the holders. All my oil specs are respected and lived by.
A highspeed milling machine and heavy duty milling will cause the sheetmetal plates to comes of.
We're switching from Edgecam 2013R2 to Edgecam 2017R1 next week and also means I'm losing my Part Modeler License which is a bloody shame.
All my parametric models useless.
Can anyone tell me if SpaceClaim is a good substitute, because that's what I have to work with.

Wow, I don't know how I missed this comment! Your website (zdspb) was a huge inspiration to me becoming a machinist. I still remember back in 2004 going on your website for tech tips on my shocker. Haha then in 2005 when I was 13 dremmeling out ion mods in my garage. What an honor to have an absolute legend comment on my video!

I’ve been using Gibbs for 13 years never have the chance to use 5th axis though! Looks exciting!
Gibbs 5 axis is the moduleworks suite, it's pretty solid! If you do get into it I would read the manual through cover to cover a few times to familiarize yourself with the functionality, it's a very detailed manual. Not the most exhilarating reading but you will learn fast. Feel free to ask me any questions if you do get into it.

Very cool parts & impressive programming. We use gibbs and just ordered our first UMC750 in december. Have been doing 4ax stuff on VMC's forever but excited about the added dimension.
Awesome! Yeah getting that extra axis really opens up a lot of possibilities for both more complex workpieces and added efficiency for existing ones. Gibbscam is an excellent software and I really do love the interface, but be very careful with the post processor. I finally have ours to a place where I'm happy with it, but it has taken about two years and a lot of patience. Gibbs has a quick turnaround on post edits, but the stock post was mildly terrifying to run. I would suggest not using TCP (Tool Center Point) on multiaxis simultaneous toolpath (the moduleworks suite). Use G93 inverse time feedrate for these things. G234 mode (TCP) on the UMC is a joke, and you will crash your machine from no error of your own. If you are running 3+2 you should be fine with G254 (Dynamic Offset). Also be very careful of the Master Clearance plane 1. (The clearance plane you enter in the dialogue box where the stock size is). Since this number is not checked in any rendering or simulation there can be collisions that are uncheckable until you post. Take your time learning all the quirks and you should be fine. Don't rush anything for the first few months. Good Luck!

wow im speechless...just started gibbscam basic mill training!!! what you are doing is above and beyond my comprehension...hopefully one day I can get to your level..btw do you know of any tutorial that i can use to practice drawing with gibbscam on?
Thank you! It took a few years to get here but well worth the time. As far as drawing, if you have access to the gibbscam online training videos (available for free to anyone with current maintenance) the video on drawing is pretty good. If you don't there is a manual available on geometry creation from lulu.com (www.lulu.com/shop/3d-systems-gibbscam/geometry-creation-color/paperback/product-22586835.html). Make sure you buy the color one! Why they even make black and white is beyond me. And if you want to read the manual without buying it they are available within the software under the file path Help_Contents_Geometry Creation

David Myers, Val--Matic. I get my 6 axis SHW in 2 months. Cannot wait. This video is exceptional. Your work is even better. Threw out Creo NC (warning to anyone who is considering Creo: started in ProMan in 1994 doing 5 axis simultaneous with a Nikken table when PTC said it could not do it. Creo NC is absolute garbage) Decided to go with Mastercam. Are we having fun...damn straight.
I'm running Gibbs so we're both running the moduleworks 5 axis suite. Pretty good software for live 5!

ocramer205 Yeah, it gets pretty intense when you need 7" in holder and 3" in stickout from a .25" ball endmill. Those tapered ball endmills are crazy rigid though, I rarely get chatter with them even running at 10,000 rpm on those setups. Harvey 2 flute alu geometry, .375" shank .25" ball
as somebody who has ocd I had a really shitty day today mainly because of my ocd, and this video helped me a ton. BTW I love the soundtrack. was it the soundtrack from Mad Max?

insane part and video. One Question: What did you do at 2:20? design the Part or was is necessary for programming
Thank you! It was for programming. I extended the vertical radii outward (to the sides) to get some overlap in the toolpath. This is for smooth cleanup on the transitions of the radii which were machined with vertical toolpath strokes, and the sides of the walls which were machined with a SWARF style toolpath. The swarf toolpath used a much larger cutter than what those small radii would allow so to get full cleanup on the finished surface while having a fast cycle time it was necessary to create these new surfaces. You can't tell in the software but this part is massive, an architectural mold made by a robotic arm.

Since Edgecam uses the same 5 axis suite that Gibbscam does it's probably almost exactly the same isn't it? I wish our reseller had multiaxis skills to teach me when I was getting started! You must be in high demand.
The five axis module is the same, bought by Moduleworks - such as Gibbs and Mastercam, and a couple more.
We need to have multiaxis skills at our company, the customers get more and more complex machines and parts. So we need to be sharp.
Regarding high demand, let's say that im not scared of being without a job :)
Wow, on point with the Moduleworks response! I love when CAM companies try to brand themselves as having better 5 axis simultaneous capabilities when most of them are running the exact same algorithms. Excluding NX, Hypermill and Powermill the 5 axis suite of all the major players is largely identical. Your customers are lucky to have someone as knowledgeable as yourself.
There's not too many good live 5 guys in my area so yeah, finding a job for us is hardly a chore haha.
No need to try to be special, if you already have something that works good - let it be :)
I don't know much about Gibbs, but i know that when it comes to the Five axis, i can do it just as good as i can Edgecam ;)
The biggest issue today is the Postprocessors.. Everyone is different, even if the machines are the same :)
Which always drives me crazy because the APT output of the software is more or less identical. That's why post processing simulation suites such as icam and camplete can postprocess between software interchangeably. We were actually just looking into camplete as a possible G-code and simulation solution for the UMC750 since they just released support for that machine. You're right though, it's all about the post at this point in time.
Can you be my instructor? Please. I do positional 5 axis, I wish I could nail at least 1 true 5 axis program like these.

Hi Jordan. How did you set up your Gibbs/Post so that it doesn't wind up the B-Axis so high?... do you ever use G92?.... our Gibbs support/post maintainer insisted on using G92 to do a 'soft' unwind but I keep reading on forums that there are better ways to do this.(if this makes sense).

exact same set up for us where I work, Machines and software. only problem is that our Gibbs support guys suck. they usually figure it out during our goto meetings when I could've done the same. We recently added the 5 axis module and I desperately want training on it already lol
I highly recommend reading the Karlo Apro book "secrets of 5 axis machining." Also, read the manual over a few times, but make sure to get the color version (if you get a hard copy). It's easily the highest quality manual offered by gibbs! If you want help from me you can hit me up on linkedin by following the link in the description.
Jordan Hart I will definitely check that out. I have been pushing my boss to accept more work that would need 5-axis programming. I love the challenge. Right now we mostly use the 4+1 or 3+2 method... I wrote a custom macro that will allow us to use the vf6-tr similar to the UMC DWO feature with G254. It has saved use so much time and we don't have to re-post proven programs to run it again with possibly a different chuck that would place the part closer or further from the machines zero point rotation . The macro takes care of all the offsets for each A and B rotation for us... Parts are more accurate too
Jordan Hart Would it be too much to ask for your Gibbs Mdd for both machines? Haas sent me stl files for them but it's such dirty geometry
That sounds like a beastly macro! To be honest I don't even use G254 anymore. Mostly because I use lots of live 5 (simultaneous) and don't like using G234 (which is a nightmare). Since G93 for live 5 only works off the zero point rotation I just run everything based on that (rtcp).
Jordan Hart Makes sense. I haven't used G234 yet myself except for a demo when they did a software update. The macro is actually very simple... once I figured out the math behind it. I think it's less than 50 lines long
All the axis and programming become academic... the clever stuff is gettting the tool geometry right for seamless blending and correct fillets with no polishing and producing the firms required on the planning!

Is there no coolant because you're just trying to show what it's doing? None of these cnc videos have coolant on? Am I just using old flow coolant machines? Is there a mist or air blast I'm not seeing? Cause you can't cut aluminum fast without getting chips stuck to tool.
Yeah, I just turn the coolant off briefly to capture the shots I need. Otherwise I've got flood and through spindle coolant on constantly
Curious as to how long it took to program that batwing looking part. I run Mastercam and I like to get ideas on how long other software takes to program.
Spencer Fox Hard to get an exact time but 20 hrs ballpark. Lots of live 5 on that one

Not me. My dad was a millwright and i went to ghetto school no place to get educated. I used to make babbitts and chase by ha d when i was 12. Built a few engines and made some stuff but. There is. Most of it is handled behind the scenes by the software and post processor, but it also takes a lot of time to set all the tool axis vector parameters up for an optimized toolpath. Part man part machine I suppose
I´m a CAD engineer myself, so I know about this. When completely broken down, most lot of the stuff with CAD and CAM is Vector calculation (vectors, planes interfering, tangential functions) as well as an absurd set of differential and integration equotations. This "behind the scenes complexity" always blows my mind. Still, this is just the tools - the machinists experience is the next building block to succesfull operate these machines and get good parts out of it. Whenever i model a complex part and it comes back from the workshop I realize "We are living in the future!"
Absolutely! It's really incredible to think how many people have put in work to make manufacturing of this complexity possible. You have the software engineers who wrote the software, all of the mechanical engineers who designed the machines, the tooling experts who are making these incredible carbide tools. The whole industry is mind blowing, and I'm always excited to be learning new strategies and pushing the limits on what all of these individuals as a collective have worked to accomplish, which is making better parts faster!

looking at both of these machines for our shop... how is the Z height with the VF6 and 310 combo?
Z height clearance with the VF6 and 310 is not good. I would go with a UMC750 over this combo, but it will not be as rigid as the VF6/310. You can cut hard metals on a UMC750 with lighter cuts. I would avoid the VF6/310, haha but if you like to live dangerously it will do a pretty good job.

@@layinrockers10 I'm not sure exactly what the biggest part I've put on a 750 is in inches, but I've worked up to the edges of the travel. It's got a really nice work envelope. One thing I would note on the 750 is that the X travel is not centered on the table, so if you're going to go bigger than the table you might not be able to machine around X+. If you're going to be machining big parts maybe the UMC1000 would be better? I've never ran it but it should be very similar to the 750, just bigger.
