The TMNT were originally created to parody Daredevil and gritty comics in general. The Hand in Daredevil, the Foot in TMNT, Daredevil's master is named Stick, the turtles' master is Splinter. They're origins are even connected in the original TMNT, the same radioactive ooze that mutates the turtles hits a boy similar to Daredevils origins. There's probably more but I can't think of them.

Actually the shield makes perfect sense offensively DD can toss and catch with Bullseye and is nearly as accurate, and with his senses and sonar can use it even more effectively than Cap or US Agent can to block gunfire or whatever.
