This completely changed my impression about Lang Lang. I have to say this is the first time I've listened to him without watching him. Previously I used to think there was less music in his playing than his exaggerated gestures suggest, but this speaks otherwise. What an artist.

Listen to Dinu Lipatti and then come back to this interpretation. You'll surely hear the differences!
Dinu Lipatti is such an outstanding J. S. Bach player! Nobody will ever reach him! :D
This doesn't change my view of Lang Lang. It's a little better than his usual play. But the ornaments are played rather strange, IMHO. (It gets much simpler if you compare it to the great Dinu Lipatti!)

    • @dthomases1

Lipatt was a truly great artist but he was "reached" and perhaps even surpassed by Glenn Gould as an interpreter of Bach.

He takes the Gigue at a speed that ordinary mortals like me can handle, proving that he's not trying to display his virtuosity. So many pianists race through it! The entire Partita is beautifully played.

I've been waiting for this - Bach by Lang Lang. I guess it's at least as interesting as anything else he does, more interesting to be honest. I bet he had to work very hard to achieve this level. I like it a lot. Bach stays Bach (solemn, strict pulse, serious, good-natured), and Lang Lang stays Lang Lang (playful, concentrated, happy, childlike). Wonderfully done, Lang Lang, this is much much harder than Liebestraume - which was also really cool but on another level ;-)

I am pianist. How can he know so many pieces ? I love what Lang Lang does because it is so free, full of imagination, souple et juste. This is alive, maybe sometimes "over-energetic". Music is like water, freezing or ebullition, always moving. Like love, between full and empty. Like God, between darkness and lightness. So Bravo !

One day I was driving, the classical FM radio was playing this piece, by him. I couldn't believe this was Lang Lang, because I was used to hear him playing piano concertos. I came home and found this video, spiritual, and moving starting 6:20. With eyes closed and felt the tenderness, a very intimate feeling that only we know is in us. These are the moments when it feels good to be alive.

I'm a pianist, I'm studying this piece and I really like Lang Lang's interpretation (I also like Schiff's, Anderszewski's, and Perahia's), when it comes to him many people are predisposed to listen to a "narcissistic" or a poorly meditated interpretation.
He takes many liberties. At least for this particular work, I think they're very artistic, they don't destroy the essence of the pieces, he finds very valuable musical relationships which would be very hard to do so if he hadn't taken the time to meditate about each one of the pieces in all their whole.
Of course, I would play very differently many of the parts, but that doesn't mean I don't like this, none of the interpretations I mentioned above offer the "ideal" interpretation for me for every part of the piece.
"Purist" and more free interpretations have their reasons to be, both are important and they delight in a different way, as a musician you need to be informed and have taste to find your own interpretation between both ways.
*Sorry if I made any grammar mistake, I'm learning English as a foreign language.

+moonsoul18 I really don't like this - for me it's not J. S. Bach! Listen to Dinu Lipatti (best IMHO) or Krystian Zimerman (even if unauthorized)! As our conductor once said: [J. S.] "Bach is dance music!" (Of course old dances like menuet, etc.)

    • @EnviroNews

Of the ones you mentioned only Anderszewski plays a stylistic Bach that is also full of imagination. His recording is pretty good. Zimmerman, though great for Beethoven and Romantic music misses the spirit entirely with his interpretation of this great Partita. Full of uncalled-for rubato and pedaling. Very muddy and un-stylistic playing.

  • @TheBrblebrble
    @TheBrblebrble 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

He plays each movement in a dance-like style in a way few other pianists do. Instead of re-interpreting Bach's work in an abstract technical way, he clearly delineates each phrase, marks the rhythm well without exaggerating and maintains melody without it getting lost in counter-point. He also refrains from bashing the keyboard during intense moments nor does he suddenly go from ppp to fff in one bar. It's just a style some people like.

So many negative comments. Without the name Lang Lang, and under a more 'revered' name this wonderful recording surely would have been received in a different way }:D
We are miles away from the shredding of the past years, both in terms of tone quality and musical wise.
The Allemande, yes, is a little too fast, but it was a customary habit in the past to take this piece much faster than the average Allemande tempo. The Corrente's choice is perfect (not all Corrente should be played at breakneck speed like, for example, the one in Partita 5) and so is the Minuet. Thr Gigue is flamboyant but well controlled... I've seen a lot worse!
In a whole, an interesting interpretation that shows us that Lang Lang is greatly improving on a musical level

I think it lacks quality in many ways but I also believe that this is an interesting version because it has "Spielfreude" You can say a lot of things about Lang Lang but he enjoyes what he is doing. But you can not expect that some one from an anti-culture can understand Bach to the fullest.

This is so good it's hard to believe it's Lang Lang. There are still hints of his signature accents but not nearly as bad as on romantic pieces and aside of that, he really just articulates masterfully. Period purists, of course are going to hate this performance, but that is a matter of taste. All in all, he should play Bach more.

For each of us music has its own meaning. Whether this is a "purist" interpretation (whatever that is - have any of our learned critics directly consulted JSB?) or whether it's "narcissistic" etc. to me is purely a personal issue. However, to me (I am a pianist) it is hard to argue against Lang Lang bringing the piano to a broader audience, whether it's through his "showmanship", his phenomenal capability, personality etc. That is wonderful at a time when pursuits that take years of effort and bring art and beauty into this world are under pressure (I think JSB would approve of that!). For the record, I thoroughly enjoy LL though sometimes IMHO he can be a little "over-indulgent", but if I had a tenth of his ability no doubt I would be too. :-) Perhaps it's just better to enjoy and be grateful - thanks for sharing. Cheers from Oz - Dave

If you take head of the differences between harpsichord and a pianoforte, then Bach sounds better on a piano. I would say you need a piano which does not have too "fat" a sound, so eg. the sonority of A minor in the F-clef area (A-c-e-a) has a cool and clear sound. Pedal is to me improving passages somewhere around in Bach's movements (eg.Partita 4 last movement) - but NOT in the Giga (Gigue) in the above video, the last movement. Lovely without pedal!

The distinction between contrapuntal lines in the Prelude, referred to by Mr. Cucchiara, is extraordinary. This is an incredibly good rendition. Pity people can't see beyond their negative prejudices about this great pianist - probably rooted in resentment at his success or his obvious joy in playing as expressed in his exuberance on stage.

Lovely playing. Hard to say if Bach intended his technical pieces to be expressive or more like exercise pieces playing at a fast tempo with little regard for dynamic changes or even subtle slowdown in tempo changes near the end of his pieces.
Minuet I & 2 are 2 separate pieces supposedly. Some pianists would play the Minuet 2 like it's the Trio (sub-movement) of Minuet 1 like LL did here by playing Minuet 1 first, then put 2 in the middle and go back to 1 to finish off.
Minuet I is used for Suzuki teaching audition.

The prelude, gorgeous. The allemande, typical Lang's overenthusiasm. From the courante to the bourres(apparently Lang couldn't manage to bring himself back to earth again): good tempo, interesting textures, but too loud. The gigue was fine.

Lang Lang is right to use the possibilities of a piano to play Bach.To play Bach classically,it needs then to be played on a harpsicord, using inequal notes to give the feeling. On a piano,it would be ridiculous. So,OK to play Bach on a piano, but playing piano and not harpsicord or,worse, typing on a typewriter. So,bravissimo Lang Lang!!!

Certainly not, for so many reasons. First of all, it’s the wrong instrument as it was written for harpsichord, but ok that’s not that much of a drama. But more importantly, neither the Ouverture nor the Sarabande are love songs but dances. And so is the Allemande, which is a gracious dance - and not an uptempo techno beat. It’s just horrible, this is a violation for everyone who is into baroque music.

Comparing with other pianists, I like Lang Lang's interpretation the best! What a perfect sound!

I can't imagine people who heard Glenn Gould's version can appreciate this. With all respect for Mr. Lang who is no doubt a good interpreter of more romantic or classic styles. AND WHY ISNT THERE A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE FIGHTING AGAINST REVERB AND EXCESS SENTIMENTALITY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC.
