I just love Richard Harris, especially as King Arthur. But, I must confess, that yellow wig is not flattering on him. This Guinevere is a trained singer, and quite lovely, but Vanessa brings something both regal and earthy to the character. She had sex appeal that Julie Andrews and this actress simply did not, and let it be known I LOVE Julie Andrews!
Oh, the look on her face when they said, "Your Majesty" and she just turns and looks at him. I've always loved the way this version did that. So cute. 😍

There are bits and pieces here on YT, but yes, I agree. Gwenevere voices and has similar accent to Andrews; I wondered if that was a consideration in this casting.
There should be a rule that all musicals must film at least one performance with at least 4 stage cameras and another two cameras that follow and focus on the main singers.

The Lerner & Lowe treasure has been one of my most favorite musicals of all time. I grew up on this stuff. What a blessing to have You Tube in my life. This company came to OKC during this time. My wife and I and our five daughters attended it at the Civic Center. It was so good and Richard Harris was wonderful! So glad to see this was preserved.

What I have seen on this video, Camelot was meant to be a play performed on Broadway rather than on the silver screen. Richard Harris' performance as King Arthur was much more captivating and energetic on the stage than it was in the 1967 movie.
I saw a performance of CAMELOT by Harris in Chicago somewhere around this time (early 1980s, I don't know the exact year). He was wonderful. About the differences between the film and the later performances by Harris, remember two things: 1. The film was directed by Joshua Logan, whose success was as a stage director, and he never quite scaled down that directing style for film. Just watch the film versions of SOUTH PACIFIC, or PICNIC. Almost every one of his films is a little too theatrical and over the top, so I place some of the blame there. Maybe a great film of CAMELOT could have been made in the right hands, but Logan's hands were the wrong ones. 2. Richard Harris had around 13-14 additional years of acting experience since the film version, and was able to rethink the role. I remember, I just wanted to see CAMELOT live. I got the chance and took it. I wasn't really enthused about about seeing Richard Harris, as I didn't like the film version, PLUS a relative of Harris had just died (I think it was his brother), and an understudy had been playing his role. Well, the performance I saw was Harris' first night back, and he gave it his all. I was totally taken aback. His performance blew me away.

Remember, he was the only director to get something resembling an acting performance from Marilyn Monroe, even Olivier couldn't quite manage that. I love King Pellinore, especially his interactions with his dog Horrid. Great comedy relief. "Oooh, you wouldn't know -- all you can see is hair!" "Anywhere around the castle will do...the MOAT?" "Y'know, there's even a hint of summer in the air...or is that YOU?"
I was in the audience when this production appeared in Los Angeles. Harris was brought in the substitute for Richard Burton who was suffering from nerve injury. Delightful show.

Got to see Richard Harris when I was 12 in August 1984 on the day Richard Burton died. Very intense Stage production of Camelot. Still one of my most memorable trips to the Theater along with seeing If/Then w/ the Original Cast.
I had the chance to see this on tour with Richard Harris but did not. HUGE regret of mine. I taped this off of HBO when it first aired (on VHS) and have adored the movie. Finally found it on DVD a few years ago. Love the mixture of humor.
I saw Camelot with Richard Harris at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood for the 20th Anniversary Celebration In 1981. It was absolutely phenomenal!! A night to remember for sure!!

THIS is almost the representation of the current historical struggles that we are in at this phase of social growth, tolerance and dreams! LOVE, and the faith it represents plus the VISION of seeking something better!
I like the fact that this production (and other stage productions, from what I've heard) take the movie's tack of opening on the eve of the final battle and playing the rest of the story in flashback, so even the lighter moments are played in the shadow of the tragedy to come. That helps a bit to remedy one of the complaints leveled against the original production--that the first act was mostly comic, while the second got more and more tragic as it went on, and it was a bit of a mood whiplash.
I first noticed this when I watched this with my elementary aged son a few years ago. He got all the jokes in the first act... And then I noticed we weren't laughing too much as the play went on
Probably my favourite musical but no one can ever replace Vanessa Redgrave in the role of Guinevere. I saw her recently in London doing her one woman show, she’s remarkable. Even more romantic is she finally married Franco Nero, her Camelot lover Lancelot in 2006. A happy ending.
I watched a bit of act 3 before taking it from the top, and in places this Gwenevere seems a little maybe one-dimensional esp where Redgrave was emoting her little heart out. I know stage and screen are different, but even so...
This was so necesary, to be able to watch the whole show with richard harris. Though I feel he's most energetic in the movie, his singing hasn't diminished
Director of the Movie Version: So let’s shoot this romantic comedy like a gritty drama and drag every scene out while giving Harris no direction whatsoever. Seriously it’s amazing how much better this recording is. Also a Guinevere that can actually hit the high notes instead of Redgrave slowing and lowering the key of every number.
The special effect lighting for Nimue, that must've been practically brand new then. The ability to do that, I mean. Even today it's still interesting.
Thank you very much for uploading this presentation with Richard Harris...🎆 I saw the movie version I've Camelot and, frankly, was not at all moved by his performance in that film... This however, is extraordinary - helps me to see why the late Harris was considered a great actor, and also why he was chosen as a longtime close associate of the great Peter O'Toole.
I remember when this first aired on HBO. I miss those early days of cable where they'd try anything. HBO had short films between shows, documentaries & retrospectives, comedy shows, concerts, and plays.
I loved this show though I would have loved to see burton, Harris was splendid, I happen to see Camelot in the Westchester dinner theatre with the young women as Guinevire in this production she was good but a little old for the role at that time, I did not stay past the second act as it was hard to capture the splendor of this shows production, but I really did enjoy Richard Harris take on Author and he sold me at the end when he speaks to the boy to remember
When i was 14 I watched this at least a dozen times on HBO. That Winter Garden Theater logo...It's so funny that these people to me are the cast. Richard Muenz is Lance for me. This was some good shit.

I adore the movie Camelot, with Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero. I'm glad I found this stage production, but it's more of a comedy version. I'll have to ponder that a bit🤔
27:00 I always thought that it was so romantic and heartwarming how Wot/King Arthur offers to return Guinevere to her father as he thought she didn’t want to marry him, and Guinevere reacts by singing the last lines of the "Camelot" song that he had sung for her, to show that she had decided to stay and be his Queen. The movie version to me was the best, but on stage, you at least hear their nice exchange before they run off. Of course, it's difficult to match the radiant beauty and acting chops of Vanessa Redgrave, but in Meg Bussert, we at least have an attractive and charming Guinevere who can really sing beautifully.
In the first scene, Guenevere is doing quite an excellent imitation of Julie Andrews. She sings very well, especially the last lines where she concedes she'd rather stay in Camelot.
At "The Lusty Month of May". Just noticed that the queen and her ladies are more dressed than they are in the movie at this point. They seem to each be wearing several layers of clothing. Good. I approve. I can see the petticoats so that means they're wearing some. 😉

I like Meg Bussert in "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" and I've always really liked what this version did with that scene. Learned that song from listening to my audio recording of this version. I like Vanessa Redgrave best for some of the other scenes though.

It is unfair to compare Julie Andrews to this competent actress. She can sing her first song quite well, and this gives me satisfaction that I still remember all the lines from my musical childhood!
Why is it unfair? She's a Broadway performer...she SHOULD be good. She has an exquisite voice that's very similar to Julie Andrews's, however her acting is dreadful.
Easy to forget how upbeat this one is when the first several minutes are so dark & sad & serious. Then we start our narrative proper, with 20-something Arthur hiding up a tree trolling an old man while singing about his cold feet (understandable, Guinevere is bloodthirsty). And it only gets worse from there. "WELL THERE'S ACTUALLY NOT MUCH GOING ON TODAY" gets me everytime.
I was thinking Harris seems to be doing a lot by rote, saying the lines and doing the gestures as practiced without always "inhabiting the role." And Guinevere seems a little flat. Merlin and Nimue and the kid at the end were great. Still watching the middle!
This makes me very, very sad. I grew up listening to the Original Soundtrack with Richard Burton (who couldn't sing to save his soul, but his sheer presence carried it) Julie Andrews, who sang beautifully, and ditto Robert Goulet. But I never fell in love with "Camelot" until I saw Richard Harris in the movie. But this.... production. I get the feeling that, by the time he starred in this stage....thing, Richard Harris had played Arthur so many times he was sick of it. The rapport he had with the bewitching Vanessa Redgrave lit the screen, and it was sheer magic. Not like this: flat; songs hurried through. No chemistry with Guenevere. Going through it by rote. And, as another observed, two of the most fun songs missing entirely: Fie On Goodness and Take Me To The Fair. No...I'm going to dig out my DVD of the movie ....and go back to Camelot. The LIVING version...This one is ....sad.
This is not the complete show. It says ACT 1 and 2, but it is not the way it was done on the stage. I did this show. Fie on Goodness was not cut, nor was Take me to the Fair. I don't know if you can get the whole thing anymore, but this is cut to shreds. Also, Richard and Meg did not get along at ALL, so yes, you are right, the chemistry is all wrong.

There was either genuine chemistry between Richard and Vanessa Redgrave, or the fact they were consummate actors still made it fly. And it really made me cranky that two of the best humorous songs were cut. Fie on goodness and You may take me to the fair are just hilarious. To cut them, no doubt for time, is just sad. Another song,the Seven deadly virtues was missing, wasn't it? Or am I punch-drunk from forcing myself to watch this travesty again?
Like I said, they were not cut from the actual stage show. Nor were they cut for the HBO show, but for some reason, whoever uploaded this, did not load the whole HBO special, which was aired in 1982. I did the show with Richard in the 80s, and we did the whole show, with some differences. Richard, by that time, owned the rights, and he changed things up from time to time. Take Me to the Fair was not done in its entirety by the time I joined the show, which was in 1984, although, it WAS done (if onlly in part.) But Richard and Meg Bussert, who you see here, did not get along. There is a very long story attached to that, but let's let that go. Regarding chemistry between Richard and Vanessa Redgrave, no, they did not have a fling. She had one with Franco Nero, who played Lancelot, and they are still together. I like that story.

BTW I loved the movie, am a huge fan of Richard Harris, this actress is excellent. Camelot is my all time favorite. I only wish Franco Nero was in this. I loved the scene where Merlin's powers are taken, King Pelinore in this production was great! I heard the soundtrack of the first Broadway production and feel that Richard Burton did not sing as well as Richard Harris sings. I enjoyed seeing scenes left out in the film! NOOOOO. Richard Burton was not nearly as good! =) I love this production, I saw it live in the 80's. I taped it (on audio cassette from the speaker on my TV) from HBO and listened to it until the tape snapped. And the I used scotch tape to fix it. I can still say all the lines as it plays without having seen it in 20 years.

Mixed feelings about the hair. I do tend to like Arthur to have golden hair but overall I think I'd prefer Richard to have *his own* hair.
What makes this play work perfectly is that the story applies to every culture. It also applies to every life.

To be fair, it had to be difficult attempting to act opposite Vanessa Redgrave. (I love the film version, but she's just bad).
Did she do her own singing? I wasn't sure, as the part was written for Andrews with her 4 octave range and coloratura top.

I remember watching this play on HBO when it first aired. There was a special documentary on some of the special effects like the lasers and such.
I saw this in High School, and the Laser Nimue scene is burned on my brain
I was in high school as well when it came on HBO. I remember how bewitching I found her arm movements; flourished at the right moment on the right notes.

I like the fact that this production (and other stage productions, from what I've heard) take the movie's tack of opening on the eve of the final battle and playing the rest of the story in flashback, so even the lighter moments are played in the shadow of the tragedy to come. That helps a bit to remedy one of the complaints leveled against the original production--that the first act was mostly comic, while the second got more and more tragic as it went on, and it was a bit of a mood whiplash.
I first noticed this when I watched this with my elementary aged son a few years ago. He got all the jokes in the first act... And then I noticed we weren't laughing too much as the play went on

Probably my favourite musical but no one can ever replace Vanessa Redgrave in the role of Guinevere.
I saw her recently in London doing her one woman show, she’s remarkable. Even more romantic is she finally married Franco Nero, her Camelot lover Lancelot in 2006. A happy ending.
I watched a bit of act 3 before taking it from the top, and in places this Gwenevere seems a little maybe one-dimensional esp where Redgrave was emoting her little heart out. I know stage and screen are different, but even so...

Seriously it’s amazing how much better this recording is. Also a Guinevere that can actually hit the high notes instead of Redgrave slowing and lowering the key of every number.
The special effect lighting for Nimue, that must've been practically brand new then. The ability to do that, I mean. Even today it's still interesting.

is extraordinary - helps me to see why the late Harris was considered a great actor, and also

I remember when this first aired on HBO. I miss those early days of cable where they'd try anything. HBO had short films between shows, documentaries & retrospectives, comedy shows, concerts, and plays.

I loved this show though I would have loved to see burton, Harris was splendid, I happen to see Camelot in the Westchester dinner theatre with the young women as Guinevire in this production she was good but a little old for the role at that time, I did not stay past the second act as it was hard to capture the splendor of this shows production, but I really did enjoy Richard Harris take on Author and he sold me at the end when he speaks to the boy to remember
I saw that same production in Westchester. I only saw three things there... all good. ANNIE, the Clancy Brothers in concert, and CAMELOT.

Ugh seriously Fiona's rendition of "The Simple Joys of Maidenhood" in this production is SO GOOD, it's my favorite. I need someone to make a clip of just that song from this video so I can listen to it alone on my shower musical playlist lmao. I don't like the soundtrack version as much as this live one

I adore the movie Camelot, with Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero. I'm glad I found this stage production, but it's more of a comedy version. I'll have to ponder that a bit🤔
27:00 I always thought that it was so romantic and heartwarming how Wot/King Arthur offers to return Guinevere to her father as he thought she didn’t want to marry him, and Guinevere reacts by singing the last lines of the "Camelot" song that he had sung for her, to show that she had decided to stay and be his Queen. The movie version to me was the best, but on stage, you at least hear their nice exchange before they run off.
Of course, it's difficult to match the radiant beauty and acting chops of Vanessa Redgrave, but in Meg Bussert, we at least have an attractive and charming Guinevere who can really sing beautifully.
In the first scene, Guenevere is doing quite an excellent imitation of Julie Andrews. She sings very well, especially the last lines where she concedes she'd rather stay in Camelot.
My community theatre is doing this, and excited to be apart of it!

I like Meg Bussert in "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" and I've always really liked what this version did with that scene. Learned that song from listening to my audio recording of this version. I like Vanessa Redgrave best for some of the other scenes though.

With that self- indulgent prologue I would have made quick exit.
It is unfair to compare Julie Andrews to this competent actress. She can sing her first song quite well, and this gives me satisfaction that I still remember all the lines from my musical childhood!
Why is it unfair? She's a Broadway performer...she SHOULD be good. She has an exquisite voice that's very similar to Julie Andrews's, however her acting is dreadful.
Easy to forget how upbeat this one is when the first several minutes are so dark & sad & serious.
Then we start our narrative proper, with 20-something Arthur hiding up a tree trolling an old man while singing about his cold feet (understandable, Guinevere is bloodthirsty). And it only gets worse from there. "WELL THERE'S ACTUALLY NOT MUCH GOING ON TODAY" gets me everytime.
I can't make up my mind whether the acting is worse or the script....The attempts at comedy are awful...
I was thinking Harris seems to be doing a lot by rote, saying the lines and doing the gestures as practiced without always "inhabiting the role." And Guinevere seems a little flat. Merlin and Nimue and the kid at the end were great. Still watching the middle!

This makes me very, very sad. I grew up listening to the Original Soundtrack with Richard Burton (who couldn't sing to save his soul, but his sheer presence carried it) Julie Andrews, who sang beautifully, and ditto Robert Goulet. But I never fell in love with "Camelot" until I saw Richard Harris in the movie. But this.... production. I get the feeling that, by the time he starred in this stage....thing, Richard Harris had played Arthur so many times he was sick of it. The rapport he had with the bewitching Vanessa Redgrave lit the screen, and it was sheer magic. Not like this: flat; songs hurried through. No chemistry with Guenevere. Going through it by rote. And, as another observed, two of the most fun songs missing entirely: Fie On Goodness and Take Me To The Fair. No...I'm going to dig out my DVD of the movie ....and go back to Camelot. The LIVING version...This one is ....sad.
This is not the complete show. It says ACT 1 and 2, but it is not the way it was done on the stage. I did this show. Fie on Goodness was not cut, nor was Take me to the Fair. I don't know if you can get the whole thing anymore, but this is cut to shreds. Also, Richard and Meg did not get along at ALL, so yes, you are right, the chemistry is all wrong.
swarze oz Y'know...I'm glad to know someone else picked up on the chill those two sent out. There was either genuine chemistry between Richard and Vanessa Redgrave, or the fact they were consummate actors still made it fly. And it really made me cranky that two of the best humorous songs were cut. Fie on goodness and You may take me to the fair are just hilarious. To cut them, no doubt for time, is just sad. Another song,the Seven deadly virtues was missing, wasn't it? Or am I punch-drunk from forcing myself to watch this travesty again?
Like I said, they were not cut from the actual stage show. Nor were they cut for the HBO show, but for some reason, whoever uploaded this, did not load the whole HBO special, which was aired in 1982. I did the show with Richard in the 80s, and we did the whole show, with some differences. Richard, by that time, owned the rights, and he changed things up from time to time. Take Me to the Fair was not done in its entirety by the time I joined the show, which was in 1984, although, it WAS done (if onlly in part.) But Richard and Meg Bussert, who you see here, did not get along. There is a very long story attached to that, but let's let that go. Regarding chemistry between Richard and Vanessa Redgrave, no, they did not have a fling. She had one with Franco Nero, who played Lancelot, and they are still together. I like that story.
Harris and Burton were both grand as Arthur but I'd really love to see a performance of Burton reprising his Arthur in the 1980 revival. Anyone know if it's available?
BTW I loved the movie, am a huge fan of Richard Harris, this actress is excellent. Camelot is my all time favorite. I only wish Franco Nero was in this. I loved the scene where Merlin's powers are taken, King Pelinore in this production was great! I heard the soundtrack of the first Broadway production and feel that Richard Burton did not sing as well as Richard Harris sings. I enjoyed seeing scenes left out in the film! I love Richard Harris too. Then again, I saw Richard Burton in the production in Toronto. And he had a very pleasant, melodious baritone. And my God, what an actor he was...

Hours on, and I tried watching this again, when I was not so tired; in a better frame if mind, etc. My assessment of Richard Harris in the opening bit stands; but he does become more himself later. Please don't burn me at the stake, but I just can't warm to THIS Guenevere. I miss Vanessa Redgrave!

NOOOOO. Richard Burton was not nearly as good! =) I love this production, I saw it live in the 80's. I taped it (on audio cassette from the speaker on my TV) from HBO and listened to it until the tape snapped. And the I used scotch tape to fix it. I can still say all the lines as it plays without having seen it in 20 years.
