Why People HATE Tim Tebow's Faith, but Not Steph Curry's

  • Tim Tebow and Steph Curry are two of the most well-known outspoken Christian athletes, but for some reason it seems like Tim Tebow is more controversial and divisive than Steph Curry. Why is this? Ray Comfort explores this interesting question from the Scriptures, and then asks people their thoughts on Christian athletes as a springboard into the gospel.

“The world” seems to also be very prevalent inside of the church with regards to this issue. At least this has been my experience in the small number of churches I have interacted with. Pretense can be a powerful thing but it is not what God commanded us of.

The Bible says in John 3:16-36 that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall not perish but have everlasting life, the Bible also says in Romans 10:9 that those who declare with their mouth that Jesus Christ is their God, Lord, and Savior they shall be saved. Revelation 1:8 says that Jesus is the alpha and the omega. Luke and revelation is the ending times, and Jesus is returning back. So are you going to submit your life to him or no? Narrow is the path that leads to the gates of heaven, but only few people find it. The gates that is the path to destruction is where many people find it! Jesus loves you SO MUCH! That he died on the cross, and was resurrected from the dead 3 days later to give us eternal life.

Great video, it is true that Tebow talks about more about the "meat" of Christianity than Curry.
As we approach Christmas, let's remember what it's really about and look at the words from Pastor Clayton King:
"Remember that the same baby Jesus born in a manger became a man who died in the cross to save us from our sins, from hell, and from ourselves. Life doesn’t end when you die. We all live forever…somewhere. Because of the love of Jesus, you can be forgiven of every sin and set free from guilt and shame and fear. Just take a small step of faith and ask Jesus to forgive you. Invite him into your life. He loves you. He’ll change you from the inside-out. You can know the perfect love of God -it starts by just asking Jesus to help you and save you."

Christmas is really about Santa presents and lawlessness.. unfortunately the whole Christina part was added to it later by the Catholic Church. In my book it’s an un holy corrupted man made tradition. They picked the worst time to celebrate his bday, during the winter solstice.
God calls us to be set apart, different from the rest of the world. I’m going to celebrate His birthday during sukkot in sept. That’s when the Bible actually points to His birth being.
So don’t fight the whole Jesus thing vs Santa this year, it’s a losing a battle. I used to do the same thing when I first got saved, I was zealous to save Christmas and promote Jesus. Until I actually researched it and found out where it all came from and originated from.

As a Christian for many years, I believe my greatest personal pain is when I sin, because I just either don't care enough not to or don't love God fully enough to stop, but knowing it's sin and still sinning nonetheless, it has damaged my life. My advice to all believers, is do not ever compromise your faith by a little temptation. Live out your faith in complete devotion, regardless of what loss you perceive it may deprive you of.

Good advice about not compromising. It's better not to in the first place. We all have feet of clay though. Don't beat yourself up, keep trying. He understands our struggles.
If you really want to become more devoted and live for Him, immerse yourself in his book, do what it says, and rub elbows with others who are trying to live by his instructions. It does make a difference. "Blade sharpens blade, so sharpens a man the countenance of his friend." The Berean Call fellowship is one good place to to do that.
I left God majorly a couple of times; once by getting involved & marrying a man who was not a real christian, and another time getting involved in apostate churches. It was a hard time of getting right with the Lord again. A real battle that I won't minimize. But I did eventually and I am much stronger now.
Don't give up, you can be strong with his help. You must cut off your sins every time they try to come back and even avoid those (people & situations) that make you fall back into them. Enlist other godly men & women to pray for you. Just trying to help. We will pray for you too.

I am a Denver Broncos fan and for those who don't know Tim Tebow had one of the most miraculous seasons in 2011. He capped it all off by beating the Pittsburgh Steelers who had the #1 defense in the playoffs after all the professional pundits said he was a lousy QB who'd never accomplish a thing. That game became known as the 3:16 game.
That night vs the Steelers Tebow threw for 316 yards, he averaged 31.6 yards per pass (NFL record), the Broncos average rushing attempt was 3.16 yards, the Steelers time of possession was 31:06, the TV ratings for that game was a 31.6 and during the game 90 million people Googled John 3:16.
This is more than a mere coincidence. The chances of that happening naturally is astronomical. On top of those odds Tebow has a strong and fearless faith. In the college national championship game 2 years earlier on the same exact day Tebow wrote John 3:16 in his eye paint. Glory to God!

I think people equate Steph Curry's faith with his success on the basketball court. They see his faith more beneficial to their beliefs because of the success he has and how happy he seems
With Tim Tebow's faith, he was given a chance but never had a successful career in pro football. Minus the 2011 season of course. He has had to endure more let downs which some people don't want.
This is where the Gospel gets confusing to people. Where some believe having God in their life will bring out all the success and happiness in the world. But as mentioned in all of the Bible, especially in Job, just because you love and pursue God, doesn't mean you are exempt from failure, heartache, and disappointment.
To me, Tim Tebow's faith is a better example of someone who has Jesus in their heart because he has complete joy in their life. Even with a failed NFL career, mediocre minor league career, and a failed return to the NFL

The belief that you are a great Christian, and God loves you so much that you will always have riches, success, etc., is called, "The Prosperity Doctrine." Originally established by TV evangelists in the 1980s, and now a popular, well-known doctrine. Another aspect of it is that you have troubles, loss, etc., it's because you are guilty of sins against God, it's a judgment, and you have to "get right w/the Lord."

While I agree with Ray that there’s a lukewarm Christianity that the world entreats, reading the comments, many are making this much more about Tebow/Curry, their holiness, their faith, and their standing before God, than your own selves. Let’s not draw conclusions about Tim and Steph’s eternity. I want to encourage many to tread lightly and consider Paul’s words…
“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else…” - Galatians‬ ‭6:1-4‬
“Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.” - 1 Corinthians‬ ‭4:5
Jesus is the standard, not Curry or Tebow.
Thank you for sharing Ray, and may God continued use you mightily in these last days!

We have to remember that these are selected clips of Steph and Tim. We shouldn’t judge someone’s relationship with Christ over a few selected clips. We all have various relationship levels (for lack of a better word) when it comes to Christ. However I believe God is more concerned with where our hearts are instead of what someone does or doesn’t do when the cameras are on. Sure it would be great to see more people publicly processing Christ, conversations about the saving grace that people can have, etc. However we live in a fallen world that does not want to advance the Kingdom of God. This world supports the things of this world and not the things of God. It’s up to us to promote the things of God in how we live.

The challenge in this analysis is that we are largely looking at PERFORMANCE elements of Christianity, on two different men in two different areas of life, with limited information to work with here. Tim Tebow was raised by missionaries, and because of the trajectory of his athletic career not going as well, he is best remembered for behaving more like a missionary. Steph Curry was raised by an athlete, and at this point is one of the most successful athletes in the world ... so he is known for his athleticism and success and less for his more average "performance" of Christianity. Tim Tebow has a background that fits better with performative American evangelicalism ... but REMEMBER: the vast majority of Christians in the world don't. African Americans come from a background of being forbidden to even READ the Scripture or confront anyone but our peers with the Gospel, so, our "performance elements" developed quite differently. We are more likely to witness privately among our friends and loved ones because of our community focus ... meaning Steph Curry's work may not be seen by the world at large as easily.
Tim Tebow's career is just about finished. Steph Curry right now is supporting his family by doing all the work it takes to keep up his career -- they are not in the same place in life, in the way that the life of the apostles and the life of the average believer would have been different. Tim Tebow was raised by missionaries. We expect him to behave that way. Steph Curry is closer to the average.

What do you do with Romans 2:4 that says "it's the goodness of God that draws people to repentance". There is a sincerity to Steph Curry. He said "my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ". Not generic "God" like so many others use. Steph confessed Jesus before men as did Brett Farve at his HOF induction. “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, Luke 12:8.

Ravi might have fallen horribly; however, Christians need to stop being so naive and immature, so as to think that real Christians aren't capable of sinning and falling tragically (or else we erroneously think that such persons must not really have been saved to begin with, or they otherwise erroneously assume that salvation must not be eternal, after all); when we are born again our spirit is immediately saved (made alive and reconciled to God eternally by God's Grace) , our soul is in process of being (present tense) saved, and lastly the body is saved at the return of Christ when believers bodies are either resurrected incorruptible or changed (if they happen to still be alive at this point)... But the problem is, that until Christ's return (at which Christ will not only judge the nations but the Church which includes the possibly of both/either rewards or EVEN punishment for things believers have done in their lifetime "things done in the body; whether good or bad") we still are ALL very capable of sin as we still have "the flesh" (not always synonymous with our physical body, but our fallen nature resident within the "members" of our body "the law of sin in our members": see Romans 7) which is still as evil as it always has been... Christians need to mature, and to start discerning the differences and the nuances... Otherwise, we learn nothing and seem to help no one.
My point is that just because Ravi fell so tragically, does not mean that he wasn't saved (even eternally, but he will account for the deeds in his body before the judgment seat of Christ, as will every other Christian)... (again, for Christians unable to distinguish the differences; this lack of discernment doesn't help you or anyone else to perceive things correctly, truthfully, and Biblically; but it can certainly hinder).

But in some of his talks, not sermons, I also believe, if anyone has listened... it's almost as if you can hear him warning you .... because he knows that he is number one, committing Adultery and idolatry against Jesus Christ. - In Christ, Christina

@@excaliburofthelevant5750 Sounds like you are commenting on why these individuals catch flack, not on Ray's question, "Why people HATE Tim Tebow's Faith, Not Steph Curry's?"
Not being a sports fan, neither of these people are of significance to me. But the clips presented absolutely distinguished the two athletes as far as the way they present their faith, which is sort of Ray's point.
As Ray said, one person demonstrates, "I am a recipient of God's Grace." The other demonstrates, "If you continue in sin you will not be a recipient of God's Grace." This is the important take away from this observation.
And also you cannot be definitive and say the only two reasons Tebow gets flack are Trump and athletic ability.

Ray, I thought I MUSTACHE you a question, but I just wanted to say that. Thank you for this video, it is convicting and encouraging. I pray and hope that my heart and the others who watch your efforts will not be hard and that I will not be indifferent and that for those of us who watch and do not then do, that we will do. It is shocking how deaf many of us are to God's Word who 'grew up in the church' although He told us it would be. I realize many of them are not saved, perhaps myself as well. The entire process so far with me losing assurance (I don't know if I should ever have had any) has been remarkable, and I can't say it is not God's doing. Through Todd Friel and you, I have seen and heard the Gospel and have been convicted of such a hard heart and indifference. I read that quote from Spurgeon a while back around when all 'this' started in my life, having thought I had been a believer since a young age (not sure), and it was as profound then as it is now. I have listened to your sermon 'Hell's Best Kept Secret' multiple times and similar things from others such as Paul Washer, John MacArthur, Martyn Lloyd-Jones and reading some from Spurgeon. I have started to read some puritans such as Bunyan and his testimony. I am following the wisdom you display in 'No read, no feed, no Bible, no breakfast', realizing how foolish it is to feed that which is perishable, and neglect and treat the eternal, holy God as an afterthought.... He truly is everything.
Bottom line, I want to thank you and write this in order to leave a bit of encouragement of sorts for you even though I know you don't need it as I know you trust and rely on God Jesus Christ, not on people. I do hope that others who see this may be convicted and encouraged as well.

While I definitely agree that as believers we are commanded to be soul-winners and preachers of the gospel to all, I think that Ray didn't address this issue rightly. The clear implication in this message is that Tim Tebow is authentically saved because he's open about the cross of Christ being the foundation of our faith and hated because of it, but Stephen Curry isn't because he only thanks and praises God and doesn't mention sin and the necessity of salvation and is loved by all. That is wrong for two reasons. First of all, they are both professional athletes and the number one reason they are scrutinized is because of their success or lack thereof in their respective sport. Tim Tebow is a former Heisman Trophy winner who unfortunately had a below average professional football career that by all standards did not live up to the hype around him when he left college. Steph Curry is a 2-time NBA league MVP and a first ballot Hall of famer who has revolutionized the game because of his shooting expertise. That is the main reason Tim Tebow is disliked and Steph Curry is loved, not their faith.
For Ray to omit that fact and to belittle Steph Curry's faith instead is unrighteous judgment. Just because he doesn't openly share about sin and the cross doesn't mean he's not truly saved. Or that his faith is somehow "invalid". Joseph of Arimathea was said to be a true disciple of Jesus in John 19, but was so secretly. He didn't openly share that he was a follower of Jesus, but Scripture said he was and God used him to preserve the body of Christ before His resurrection.
Ray could have done a video about Tim Tebow ALONE and promoted the fact that he is disliked because of the openness of his faith but that he stands for the gospel openly and that would have been edifying. But to then make Steph Curry appear to be Judas in regards to his faith is legalistic and wrongly-spirited. Again, I agree that Scripture teaches that believers in Christ SHOULD preach about sin and its deadly consequences and be open about our commitment to Christ and His cross and if I had a chance to talk to Steph Curry I would lovingly tell him such. But what is unbiblical is making a judgment that his faith as invalid based on a standard of righteousness that the Bible doesn't use as the measurement of salvation. (Romans 10:9-10)

Something good to know. There's a verse which more or less I say this as a reminder for you...there was a verse that said be anxious for nothing, now I know it's much easier said than done, like trying not to act on reflex, but I pray God will help you out. Now I say this through experience, God may help in ways you might not hope, but remember, God's ways are higher than our ways. God knows what will help most. I noticed when I had prayed for the ability to preach better and to get over my fears of preaching to others, I had gotten a lot of urges to just go preach to people. Not what I had hoped for, but in hindsight it makes sense to just do it. Getting better alot of the time isn't something we suddenly get but it's through experience a lot of the time, not to say it's impossible just to suddenly gain the ability. Look at Solomon, he literally woke up as the second wisest man in history. More or less, you will have to fight your nature and go on regardless. One good thing to remember is just because you might fail on one person, doesn't mean you will fail on the next. Of course, try to plant the seed. Just because someone doesn't accept the gospel straight away does not mean you failed. You may have planted seeds like in your brother for example. The seed will take time to grow, but it could grow as slow as a saguaro or quickly like bamboo. The goal is to atleast plant the seed. Also what you can do, ask the Lord for things in general. You can ask for things you may think are small, or even bigger things. You have to be willing to recieve what God gives though, because again, it might not be the way you hoped it would be given, but God knows what will help most. Also, you can think and prepare before you speak, but DO NOT overthink. Overthinking can and will hinder, but doesn't mean you shouldn't think. Hope this helped :) any other questions, feel free to ask

Also, I don't say this to discourage, but to help you. Speaking through experience, be prepared to read and hear things that might harm your faith, simply put, don't be faint hearted. Be unmoving and unwavering. One great thing about Christianity is that we have historical proof. You can search about historical events. The site of Sodom and Gomorrah was found, Noah's ark was possibly found, Noah's ark is actually capable of doing what it was made for, the Ipuwer papyrus describes the plagues of Egypt, and also ancient historians describing Christ and Christians like Pliny the younger, and even a person that talked about the three hour long darkness and earthquakes that happened when Christ was crucified, and the red sea crossing, and possibly more. Multiple prophecies we're also fulfilled like the destruction of Tyre. I say these things to help your faith be strong and for others that may see this comment. Be strong in faith, and keep the faith. God bless you Amen :)

Also, don't try to push people into listening, because maybe that might discourage people. Some people will be unwilling to listen, but don't just quit on evangelism just because of the possibility. It's better for the person to be unwilling to believe but listen instead of trying to force someone into listening. Of course, still try to speak to people, and defend your faith though. More historical things: The tops of the mountains of Sinai are scorched black by fire, which is biblical, there is also evidences of the Exodus like the rock which Moses struck, and ancient writings along the trail, and Jericho. I hope this stuff helps you. Again, if you have questions, feel free to ask

It would be really cool to do a “years later” interview with someone you introduced the gospel to! Have you ever gotten a message or comment from a convert who was a stranger that they are thanking you for pulling them aside for a conversation? Maybe you could set up a video with them :)

Ray as you upload these videos And I watch them I am just completely shocked that in this country there's a church basically on every street corner or thereabouts and people just do not know the basics of Christianity. I am just so surprised by this. It just shows that our work in the Lord is ongoing.

I disagree. CURRY is more beloved because he is the best shooter in the history of the NBA and he is one of the best players ever. Tim Tebow was a mediocre professional that never had any sort of consistency let alone professional stardom. In my humble opinion I believe that is the difference between the two.

    • @alecepting1371
      @alecepting1371 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think you hit the nail on the head. This video implies Curry is nominal in his faith, if a believer at all. Curry attended Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, NC, an nondenominational evangelical school. He is by no means nominal. He is liked because he is very successful in the sport while Tebow has had a mediocre professional career. So many hate Tebow because he gets so much press and is really not that good as a professional athlete. As a believer, though, he is very much to be admired. Besides building a hospital, he also sponsors a prom night for the physically and mentally challenged. Great guy all around. I think that the badmouthing by his critics has very little to do with him calling out sin.

    • @thecensoredmuscle563
      @thecensoredmuscle563 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Tebow was disliked by the media because he was influential when it comes to Christianity. Curry is not influential at all, and he simply supports whatever the media, and the industry tell him to support.
