Gil Scott Heron was pure and unadulterated. I think people that are receptive to this kind of expression can be moved in the deepest of ways when they recognize it.
With Gil Scott it really depends on the song A lot of times I'm brought to tears, a lot of times I'm about to laughter, a lot of times I'm brought to clenched fist. No matter the emotion this guy is my .use I wanna be a bluesologist like Gil Scott heron giving the people's word like a true profit.
If only the world’s population would listen to this wonderful man’s music…I truly believe the planet would be free of war , depredations and such like…God bless you Gil …My love to you always , your music squares my circle.
@@johnreeves6286 man if I got to meet more ppl like you life wouldn't be as disappointing as it is but I try to keep my kindness living in America they really try to strip it from you one way or another but like Gil said can't subscribe to this worlds madness knowing that I got to move on peace to you brother
I'm 32 and feel the same way. I guess this kinda music is just universal like a lot of the stuff the talks about in his songs is stuff just about everybody goes through and can relate to.. back in the 70s when he wrote the songs and still nowadays (and in some ways this is incredibly sad that things haven't changed since the 70s). Peace!
Same age here. Though he died in 2011, it always seemed his spirit lived on forever. Man speaks to us because he is alive. He's not a dead man to me; it feels like I bloody know the guy. "I'm New Here"/"NY Is Killing Me" really speak to me in a way I can empathise with him, feeling lost in NYC and feeling like a stranger. Society has asked us to repress so much of our individuality (just to partake in the commodities), but I know Gil and he's one arrogant son of a bitch who doesn't stand for that. "I've Been Me" was pretty much his last reflection on his life: th-cam.com/video/c1zVOhohQt4/w-d-xo.html His art and music was the one freedom he knew he could always depend on, and people's truest selves often show up in their artistic output, and knowing Gil, that was by design.
I came of age in Detroit celebrating the Motown sound & everything that it represented. In 1971, I came across a great FM station out of Windsor (CJOM) that, beginning at midnight, played only Jazz & Blues (e.g., Gil Scott-Heron, etc.). "Pieces of a Man" rings as true today as it did then. "I'm gonna take myself a piece of sunshine & paint it all over my sky...."
No words to describe this gem. I have to grant GSH genuine. This song brings me so much joy, hope, relief and happiness at the same time that tears come to my eyes. RIP Sir.
For all of the unflinching, harsh examination of human nature Gil was known for in his work it's nice to hear a song that that offers something more affirmative from the man - the will to persevere in the midst of it all.
Oh just listen. This man has pulled me out of the blues so many times. I will always feel some sadness for Gil but its aways replaced with a very warm feeling.
And me too in fact one new year's eve i was really depressed and didn't want to go out and the thought in my head was how can I get through the next year and I found a gig of his and he absolutely saved my life that night and I ended up having a good time on my own
This so beautiful I love Gil Scott and now in my older age I just heard this song for the 1st time I always loved his voice and B Jackson god I feel he singing from his heart bless u Gil u such a beautiful brother ❤
I am glad that I had a chance to see Gil Scott Heron live. It was years ago at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia. I will never forget that performance. The Bottle was a big hit and the album I was listening to was Winter In America. I am completely touched by his writing and his music.

This song takes me right back to my childhood in 1970. Not that I knew the song in those days, but it evokes the times, and the very best music of the times. Just beautiful.
Today is the above poet's 71st Birthday. Sorry Gil! I was thinking of Marvin Gaye who left us 36 years ago today. I still would have loved to hear what you think of the mess this world is today.
I come to this song it take all my sorrows float away and bring a smile because it bring me closer to my husband and I feel his present looking up at the brightest stars and early morning when this blue bird and a special red C rip Joseph & Gil

Just discovering Gil Scott-Heron and every track is pure gold.
Facts 💯💯💯
Enjoy! He was my contemporary and roommate of friend I grew up with at Lincoln U. outside Philly. Pained, but absolutely brilliant musician-poet!
I discovered him in High school. I'm 71 now still enjoying every song he had in his catalog ❤
Relax, you are in the hands of the master!
Musicians of this calibre come along but rarely!
This was released in 1971 Gil-Scot was born April 1949. This was written by a man of 20/21 years old. Let that sink in today.
Only bad thing about this song is that it ends
As we all do but memories live on.
This song makes me so happy, but I cry like a baby every time I hear it! Gil Scott RIP!!!
This song is so deep. Black Happiness while living in the struggle. Gil I miss you brother. We need your voice in 2023. 🙏🏿

I LISTEN TO THIS SONG EVERY MORNING ! ! !
and I think ill call it morning... from now on
Yes every morning
Feels good to be out of my depressive rut for a few minutes.
No better song for it, surely!
same here
He would not want you to be depressed. Stay strong and keep on truckin' as they use to say........
Yes Ginkgo listening to Gil will surely do that. The brother was wonderful.
true!
Why does this song nearly reduce me to tears everytime?
