Been there, seen this very concert, travelled all the way from Poland. Flight to NY $xxxx, hotel $xxx, entry fee $xx, experiencing night gigs at Smalls - priceless. Makes life worth living.
Love the development of those thematic ideas from the melody but also that sense of total freedom and space. Hard to combine the two. Will have to find that Jim Hall version.
I have most of this video but out of respect to Ari...I have only posted what he wanted. Hopefully I'll go to smalls again and get some more video soon.
The intro is the same note intervals as the original intro, they're just messing with the time. Jazzster123, I wholeheartedly disagree. I don't wanna hear the original version of this song where everything is exactly the same aside from the solos. They're making their own version here. I think that's the beauty of playing old standards in the modern jazz setting.
Ask someone why they like jazz and they will often tell you it's all about the improvisation and freedom to create. BUT! Make sure you don't create or improvise in any way different than.......fill in the blank.
Straight up, straight ahead, etc. This is a standard jazz song (it's new to me however, big jazz fan but more of a "Fusion" guy than traditional, so i'm no history buff) But I guess this could be considered "Traditional" Jazz
Yes! Tempo is about 1/4 note = 350b.p.m (pretty fast!) If you go to the beginning of the vid, the first bass drum hit is on the 1st beat, followed by snare on the 2nd and 3rd. They build that little motif over the first few minutes of the vid. When the guitar first comes in, he joins on the 2nd and 3rd beats of each measure. It's easy to hear this displaced (as if those hits were on the 4th and 1st beats), which is one of the things that makes this recording challenging. Good luck!:)
Love the Jazz Standard....remember Sonny Rollins version....too much lolly gagging at the beginning playing with the time. Do this for a little and then burst into Swing. Working Musicians however
Fine guitarist and band, but this tune should not be entitled The Way You Look Tonight. Gilad uses his pedal board to transform his sound which is fine and exotic for many listeners, but departs from any real reference to a jazz standard. He barely states the melody around six minutes in.

Ari easily ranks among the best drummers ever to me..
i love his face during his solo
Anyone else hear a lot of Dave King?
Very easily, his approach his essay worthy
They don't stick to any of old fashionned ways of approaching jazz . Free musicians in a free world of music . That's great !
It's so hard to follow the form of this, but I love it.
AH grooves so fresh! So fresh his initials are onomatopoeia.
Gilad and Ari are a perfect match.
this is so incredible, what a treat to listen to. thanks for posting!
Why is Orlando LeFleming so amazing?

Awesome! wonderful!

Wonderfully musical drummer...almost lyrical

3 years old comment but that's exactly right!
ground breaking rhythms though !

nice
What style of jazz would this be called?
Straight up, straight ahead, etc. This is a standard jazz song (it's new to me however, big jazz fan but more of a "Fusion" guy than traditional, so i'm no history buff) But I guess this could be considered "Traditional" Jazz
Wait, is this the Smalls in NY? I love that club! It's in the basement through this inconspicuous red door.
anovy88 Yes
The look the guitarist have when he looks on Ari is terrifying!:D. Nicely played though!
My dog has no nose
they sound incredible, but it's frustrating to watch this as a guitarist because gilad's hands always seem to be slightly out of frame.
if it's 'always' and in a consistent manner, then it is not.
Is this just in 4/4 time? I have a bit of a struggle figuring it out!

The guys sound great as always! Jonah -- what kind of camera/mic did you use to record this??
my kids asked ,is the drummer eating chili sweets
steve beckett what are chilly sweets? Like hot candy? It looks like the whole band is on hot candy.
Tight huh?
Why the faces?
@5:26
how does he see?...wait....that's not right!!!
Love the Jazz Standard....remember Sonny Rollins version....too much lolly gagging at the beginning playing with the time. Do this for a little and then burst into Swing. Working Musicians however
The jazz police have spoken.....
right, and your videos i just perused are awesome... embarrassing
where's the music????
listen to the connection between the guitar, drums, and upright bass!
Or lack there of.
St Forgione The song makes a couple of brief appearances at 6:10 and about 9:20.
nice trio
Quite frustrating from a guitarist point of view not to see his hands.
Beautiful music though
Doesn't sound like the intro to me. And if you are going to play the song, play the song.
you have doo doo in your soul
They need more focus...
They can't get more focus than that!
אסף חריס
You're whack
what a thread
You need more focus
