Wow, Ari Hoenig really incorporates the melody into his playing in such a unique way. It’s awesome to watch these gifted musicians having fun while playing such complicated stuff! Great video.
The way hekselman and ladin hold back/play just simply enough when the groove breaks out into the loose funk feel... Textbook example of not overplaying, and the awesomeness that can come of it.

Hard work and dedication, those two and those two alone will set you on the path of greatness - Parker, who wrote this number, was notorious for practicing up to 10 hours a day during his rise to prominence and throughout his prime. Of course, very few have enough stamina to last 10 hours a day, but just practice practice practice as much as you can, listen to as much jazz as you can, play in as many jam sessions as you can and simply aspire to breathe music. It won't all be fun and games, I can guarantee you that (in fact most of the time you'll feel like complete shit and want to give up), but the result when you play in jams and for fun with other musicians is the most rewarding thing on earth :) Just keep a persistent mindset, and maybe you'll find yourself one day in Smalls like Hoenig here.
Thank you so much guys. I am a burklee student for guitar principal. Since I got here I've been practicing 8 hours a day. My former teacher saids I should have a blind faith. That is kind of a mind set I got right now. But really I started to play guitar at 19..many people including my parent said I'm too late. But who knows. Anyway Your words meant so much to me and yeah no one gets these kind of skills for free.
Total epic Jazz club experience. Great playing and swinging by all. Wish I could have been at this gig. These guys gel and get along so musically, reading each other's thoughts at the blink of an eye. Hope Canopus Drums gives Ari those drums, he makes them sing! Nice ride cymbal on Ari's right. This is great stuff.
Super killing.... but most importantly... they look like they're having fun... Can't count how many killin major jazz acts I've seen that look like they're sitting in a 9-5 job when they're playing
Yea, which is the main reason why I don't care about going to Jazz events or performances much. I've rather see a Funk band any day of the week. That's a damn party!
Awesome interpretation of this great tune! This alternating improvisation was really incredible and Hoenig is very melodic in his playing. 7:35 Quote of Four (Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson) and unexpected quote of In The Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg) by Hoenig at 0:15.
How in the world do you count that section between 4:33 and 4:58? Sure, I can just count "1-2-3-4" and stay in time, but I can't imagine building rhythmically like that while staying perfectly in time.
nope i liked it much better how he did it. if he had a second locked off camera and someone to cut it live for him then it would be perfect. shame I'm not in town ;-)
Most creative drummer on the scene today.
Shout out to that bass player holdin' all that shit down.
This cameraman KNOWS
where the hell has this video been hiding? this is without a doubt some of the best jazz I've heard in ages.
No drummer makes me smile like Ari Hoenig.
He's, really Erskine can kill him, to busy dude, don't make me smile at all
Really listen to Jeff tain watts cmon man 🤬

this seriously blows my mind every time I come back to watch it

beautiful, reminds me of the jazz bars we have here down in Melbourne. Just a bunch of pros ripping on a chilled night.
Ari Hoenig was born to express himself via percussion. and what Beautiful Music it is. His 'Santa Claus is Coming Town' on skins is Unreal.
All that's right about the younger generation. Bird, Trane, Miles, Bill Evans, Max Roach
would be blown away!
I hope this is a joke
enter brainwashed jazz purist...

@@sotender48 Gsus4 man chill
@@MrBaraka123 Miles would for sure be in awe. He'd love it.
Amazing music right here. I love Ari's intensity and musical communication.
some advanced conversations going on here! I love how the drummer comes up from underneath throwing each soloist into patterns.
feel like crying man...
damn.. will i ever be...
***** real words of wisdom right here ^

김재영 transcribe, practice and play with the best players you can find. You've got this!

how has it been going over the last year?
Incredible and beautiful. It's great to hear these soloists trading so quickly...really starts to sound like a 'shared' solo...my fav kind of jazz.
Love the vocals in this
what an outstanding performance.
This makes me believe in mankind. So much wibe, love and dedication.
1:51, when the drummer plays the actual notes of the head on the kit, you got yourself a good drummer. Ari really is amazing

Simplemente maravilloso... no se puede dejar de escuchar!!!
04:33 - sick comping lesson from Ari ;). Thank you!
The waitress' face when the sax player quotes R Kelly (16:12)

EPIC, i want more of these guys
Excellent melodic use of the drumset, I loved it! Got me inspired!
This sounds soooo fresh !!!
She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes. toot toot
Ari Hoenig played so beautiful as if i can hear a song in his solo.
This is just awesome!!!
Pretty creative loose and fresh..dig it BT..
She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes.
4min30....and climax at 4min55 !! thank's Ari, so good trip !

7:35 Quote of Four (Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson) and unexpected quote of In The Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg) by Hoenig at 0:15.
+Lucas Machado dos Santos There also a quote-trade between the sax player and Ari on Salt Peanuts at 8:55 :)
Great musicians
That groove at 11:10. Love it!

Fresh!
I love the look from the bartender at 16:10
thit is WILD
i love you
Wicked comping Ari;)
OMG!Perfect!
I always think there are vibes in this recording at 1:39 ... but they're just bar glass clinks
How in the world do you count that section between 4:33 and 4:58? Sure, I can just count "1-2-3-4" and stay in time, but I can't imagine building rhythmically like that while staying perfectly in time.
Dakota Hoeppner feel it in two. that'll help negotiate the rhythmic weirdness
feel it in 1
listen to the phrasing from the band and you don't need to count it. Also be cognizant of the fact that most of the big hits are happening on "ands"
also, if it helps you orient yourself, Gilad is playing whole notes at the top of the form around 4:52 (the first one anticipated slightly)
The ending. So good, and Tevon just about to go into Rkelly ahaha
Haha how about that Edvard Grieg quote at 0.15. Insane!
halflaifjee name?
***** In The Hall of the Mountain King
hahaha dang dude sweet. killed all the planets then ended with much luv and yep, cut dat cut dat hahaha i almost quited. amazing.
Ari is one of the most bad ass drummers around.
Max + Tony + Elvin.... This is tradition on steroids
I love that part from 4:52 - 4:57
I like how you can see the bass player from the mirror.
Interpretação diferente de tudo que eu já tinha ouvido desta música até hoje...
You think the cameraman could simply zoom out and leave the camera static! Thanks for the great music all the same.
nope i liked it much better how he did it. if he had a second locked off camera and someone to cut it live for him then it would be perfect. shame I'm not in town ;-)
0:14 inspector gadget
Anyone know the funk jam around the end so killin
Or the chords
G - A9 - Cm6 - G

16:07 what is that?
16:08... I recognize that... what is it? Tip of my tongue.

8:11 whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

4.40 the roof says: bye bye, i'm coming down now.
11:30, tho...
Ari is the man, no doubt, but goddamn I wish he would relax and play time for a minute without a bombastic interjection.
that's how he plays time, brother
4:30 to 5:30 u can put it on repeat ;p
wowowowowowowowowowow
It’s funny. Until the sax quoted the head during one of his solos, I’d forgotten I was listening to Billie’s Bounce 😂
Anyone know what hats Ari is using here?
its looks like vintage zildjian avedis thin new beats
Chris Peters Bosphorous lyric 14" those are his signature model. And really good ones
Name of the song he plays in 1'10'' - 1'52''??
Coming round the mountain!
Anyone know what pedal Gilad is using during the outro?
morley mini volume/wah
lmao at the face of the sax player at 16:14!!
There are two people who have absolutly no idea what happening here. That's sad but kinda funny too. :D
Luke Dylan It's up to seven people now!
Must be Justin bieber followers!!!
Todos son unos chingones, pero Ari Hoenig es una reverga...
