- James Kalm has been following the work of Neo Rauch since a happenstance visit to his one person show at the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2001. Since then, your correspondent has reviewed and video recorded Rauch whenever possible. As a former citizen of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik and a leading figure of the Leipzig School of painters, the artists has acquired a unique position as social prognosticator of Post-Socialist Europe. Melding influences as disparate as Communist propaganda, comic books, obscure German art history and Surrealism, Rauch builds out ambitious pictures that never quite coalesce into coherent narratives, but require the viewer's imagination to supply their plot-lines. This has positioned Rauch as one of today's most enigmatic, prolific and recognized German artists.

Like yourself, I been following Neo since he came on the scene. I did not know, however, about his parents or the military officer experience. My understanding was that he was quite successful under the communism art system despite the limitations. I am amazed at how large his works have gotten and it is amazing that people have the wall space to display such works. Neo always seems to me to be so unique and fringe that it is hard to believe that he is now firmly planted in the super strata of artists. Thanks Loran and Kate. Chris

Thanks for this. One of my favorite German figurative painters along with Jonas Burgert and Daniel Richter. Artists whom we will never see here in NZ except in reproductions. Your videos bring them a bit closer (despite the camera movements doing my head in a bit ;)
His work is far more loose up close than one would suspect. Great painter.

very impressive, his figure painting is great..as is his sense of light, natural and artificial. i love his yellows, especially one work which has a female figure with what looks like yellow tights bleeding into a yellow skirt, with green and red highlights

His wife dummy. James is really named Loren Junk, he a highly skilled artist and knows everybody in the art world. Check out his work I guarantee you will be surprised at what he is producing.

I said some unkind words about Rauch's painting earlier and wondered if I was mistaken therefore watched another of your videos. Something still profoundly bugs me about his work. A kind of disconnect between the forms. Nothing comes from his body. All in the head. Absolutely no regard for the important element of energy.. I can understand how some would find the juxtapositions clever. Just gutless, all around.
Hey @juliamargaretcameron one of the main goals of this project from its beginnings is to encourage critical thinking. If this is your assessment fine.
I would be curious to know what contemporary painters might fit your category of not "gutless" (and please don't mention Basquiat or Guston, as they've been dead 25-30 years now.)
Hopefully this trend of being ironic will burn out eventually. I've nothing against addressing dark themes . Francis Bacon achieved this superbly. @@jameskalm
@@@juliamargaretcameron fair enough, but again Bacon is thirty years in the past (not that one can't receive good inspiration from history but, there's also a lot of coloring, or distortion that happens through the course of time that changes the way something looks today from what it looked like when it was "new").
At the moment I can't think of a contemporary figurative painter that fits the bill. Off the top of my head: Ray Parker is an example of being a gutsy painter tho uncertain if he's still around. Gutsy meaning a sense of coming from living in a physical body and expressing that experience viscerally.
Come to think of it-Francis Bacon was not an accurate example. Bacon was addressing more profound issues of human existence. Neo Rauch is addressing a sort of all around disconnect prevalent in much contemporary society . At least he communicates that, has his hand on the pulse.

Boring, uuww ya sure he's a skilled painter, next. Realism is so done. Realism requires the highest skill level, true. But I would rather look at a jean Michel Basquiat.
