Thank you doctor jo, after second back surgery, diagnosis failed back surgery syndrome, my right hip,leg gives out, trouble sitting, standing, walking, weakness. Should I use a cane on my right side ? Thank you doctor jo any suggestions would be helpful. Wishing you an the family happy holidays. Thank you again.
I was ready to animate a character with a cane, but thought I should look up a few videos first and now I see I had the cane in the wrong hand. Glad I saw this before I had to redo all my work.
There is an episode of House where the physical therapist tells him that he needs to start using the cane on the proper side. I think they knew and just made that another facet of his characterization.
Still should've made it clear earlier. Social media has a big impact on people's perceptions, especially of disabled people. For example the visual cue of having blind characters wear shades has led to actual blind people being questioned or told they're faking because they don't wear glasses.
A recent and unexpected knee issue has me requiring assistance from a cane. Someone that had a hip replacement informed me I was using the cane incorrectly. Thankfully she caught it. This video confirmed it. At least I got the height right. I appreciate the clarity, and brevity of this segment. Thank you!
Wow! My knee went out this morning and I just bought a cane an hour ago. The pharmacist didn't how to use it and I just googled you and I'm amazed it's so simple now. Thank you so much Dr Jo!!!
I need a knee replacement. My knee almost gave out on me this afternoon at work. If I hadn't grabbed something, I would have fallen. I bought a cane and am glad that my RN sister told me to look up how to use it.
I’ve never needed a cane until this week .. was ready to throw down the stairs until I looked it up.. I felt silly but thx to you Im doing a little better
Wow, thank U Dr. Jo. Nobody ever told me how to measure or walk with my cane. I'm close to being 48 yrs old and have been walking with a quad cane for 10 yrs. I suffer from grand mal seizures, fibromylgia, arthritis, all the non-peachy perks that come with my ailments. I've had seizures since I've been 3yrs old, fibromyalgia in my early 20's, and arthritis about 3 or 4 yrs. God has blessed me I can't complain. There are some things I can't do? As drive anymore, work, but you know I'm still fighting the best I know how. Thank you and Goodnight.
I am glad you pay attention to detail!! It always makes me cringe a little when I see TV shows doing it wrong because people see it that way, and do it wrong as well! Good luck with your animation!!
Awesome video AskDoctorJo . I am a 31 y.o. male recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis. When I have flare ups in my ankles and feet I have difficulty maintaining my balance while walking. I just bought a quad cane and am practicing using tips from this video!
I appreciate this vid! Years ago, when I was at my heaviest weight, I developed psoriasis on my right ankle (right side), and began to experience pain. Didn't know why, until I was sitting on the couch one afternoon and saw a commercial discussing "psoriatic arthritis", and then realized what I was dealing with. Psoriasis hasn't ever come back to my ankle, but with cold weather, it's get debilitating sometimes walking on that ankle, or even that foot at times, so having a cane helps alleviate that pressure. Will have to get used to using the cane with my left hand, and trying to walk simultaneously, for those moments when I need that support. Thank you again!
I'm struggling with coming to the realization of needing a cane. I'm trying to work on myself, and learning how to use one felt like a good step to see how to use one right by actually using one and seeing if it helps at all. Thanks for making the video
Can't believe I found you just when my mother in law needs to use a cane to help her balance when walking! I am going to show her this video and practice with her tomorrow! Great instructions and demo! Thank you!
Thanks for this! I broke my ankle 4 weeks ago and I'm in a boot and my doc just told me to start putting weight on it and it's hard without having support especially since I've had my crutches for the past 4 weeks. This was so helpful!
It really depends on how much balance you have. If your balance is good, and you just need to take some pressure off your ankle, a cane would be fine. If you need a little more support, then you might want to use a crutch. Good luck!!
Some people are not going to have enough balance to move them together...especially with a quad cane. In those cases, you want to lead with the cane first, then follow with the opposite leg level to the cane instead of through like a normal step. We call it a "step-to" pattern instead of a "step-through" pattern. I hope that helps!! Good luck!!
The way shown is the correct way. If it does not work well, then that is usually an indication that you need an assistive device that helps you more (quad cane, walker). The problem with using it on the other side is that it changes your whole body mechanics and that can cause other problems in the long term. I have worked with several patients that have CMT. Have you ever tried aquatic therapy? This really helps because you can strengthen your muscles without gravity causing so much pain.
What a nice find! Thank you, Dr. Jo. I have considered buying a cane for my Arthritis issues. Since I don't have a leg injury, but sciatica-like pain in hips, sides, buttocks, legs, etc. I don't really know which hand I should be holding the cane in. Mostly of late the pain is in the above mentioned areas along my right side. I was trying a cane in the local drug store and I noticed that pretty quickly I was adding shoulder, hand and opposite leg and knee into the mix. (Wow, I'm a mess! LOL ) So, since I can't levitate, I thought a cane could help somewhat. I have been noticing a decrease in balance of late and on a walk through the woods I had improved that balance when using an old tree branch as a walking stick. Do you have any advice relative to my issues, or would you suggest experimenting with what works best for me? Thank you for the video!
I am 39 and I had a stroke 4 days ago. Thank you so much for this video. It showed me that I had my cane too low to begin with and it’s adjusted now so it even feels better on my arm. Thanks again!
Yes! I think it would help. When you get the numbness/tingly feeling, that usually means the nerve is compress or pinched somewhere. Many times that comes from the back. Make sure to get it checked out sooner than later! Good luck!!
If you can get the hang of it, you want each (Loftstrand) crutch to follow the opposite leg. So right arm goes, left leg follows, and left arm goes, right leg follows. I hope that helps!!
Thank you for researching it!! It is frustrating when I see actors doing it wrong because people see it and think that is how to do it! Good luck with your performance!!
I'm so glad you made this video. Just got my cane today because of knee issues. I am going to the grocery store and now I will be more confident after practicing a little. Since no one prescribed it for me I wasn't sure of height or which hand to use or which leg to stride with the cane. This video is a Godsend! Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this. Bless you.
What should you do if both legs hurt equally? I have arthritis in both knees and I'm unsure about how to handle that when it gets particularly bad. Thank you very much for this video, though! It certainly helped me for when it's one knee or the other!
I'm 27, going on 90. I bought a cane to help with a femoral hernia. I never thought I'd need to watch this, but I'm glad I did. I was doing it wrong. Thank you.
I had a labrium tear on my left hip and after 2 weeks was told to go from 2 to 1 crutch, using it on the opposite side the affected hip. I will move onto a cane eventually. Not having in on the affected side didn't make sense. I thought you'd want to use it to support you weak side. But once I used it per the doctors orders, it was more comfortable. Thankfully your video explains how to correctly used a cane as know I'll be doing my rehab correctly!!! Thanks so much!
Thanks! I am a Carolina boy and Gamecock transplanted to Santa Barbara for the last 25 years. I’m getting a total knee replacement on Thursday and really appreciated the refresher on the cane! Something about the South Carolina banner that gave me joy, thanks again.
Where is the fracture in your knee? Patella (kneecap), tibia, fibula? Unfortunately, with fractures without surgeries, many doctors keep you in a brace for up to 3 months. It just depends on how well it is healing, even when it feels good. Have they had you doing any exercises with the brace on?
Thank you. Just bought my cane yesterday. Will be having a full hip replacement but not til after my hernia surgery and release from that. I appreciate you doing this video!
This really helped. I have sciatic pain / bursitis in my left hip/leg, and I just had to start using a cane this past week. Your video was quick and instructive.
This was very helpful! Just graduated nursing school and for the life of me couldn't comprehend the 'ins and outs' of proper cane and crutch use. Seeing it was the key! Now I need to find a video on going up and down stairs. I understand it as "good" is up and "bad" is down; therefore going up lead with good leg, going down lead with bad leg. Hmmm.
After a broken hip the physiotherapist in rehab taught me the opposite. Then my sick fund physio taught me the opposite to that. Now, a year later, I just lead with whichever foot is easiest, depending on the stairs, if there's a handrail and which side the handrail is on.
Holy cow!! I bought a cane today because I injured my left foot and I just knew I was using the cane incorrectly. Your video set me right and now it's so much easier to get around. Thank you Doctor Jo!!!💖
I hope u dun feel gross of me. Lately I feel very lazy and uncomfortable to take a shower. I can go a day without showering. I am lazy to even wash my face. It's been months I dun touch my face with cleanser, toner and moisturizer. I even kinda scare of water :( My mum and sister already nagging of my steady uncleanliness.. Guess I am insensitive of my own BO. Serious I dun think I am smelly. Any tip to share doc?
Thank you. I'm just now using a cane to help me walk around work after surgery for cancer. Your advice about height of the cane and which hand to hold it and how to walk taught me what I needed to know. Now I'll practice.
My hip and knee of the right leg are constantly painful but nobody seems to know what is wrong. I've started using a cane occasionally when I'm in too much pain to tolerate walking without it. Your video was very helpful. Thank you for sharing with us
Oh no! Today is "Have a Bad Day" Day. If you're having a bad day, then check out my excellent dancing skills in the video below. Hopefully they will turn that frown upside down!
Unfortunately, I don't have a cane. Some people don't even use a cane. Many people use walking/hiking sticks, and decorative things these days. The technique is the most important part. I hope it is easy to understand, and I hope the video helped. Good luck!
@@drivinsouth651 Yeah to blanket claim that he simply does it wrong is very misleading and sometimes dangerous. House does it wrong... Unless you're unable to support enough weight on your injured leg to take a step (which he can't) and therefore he does it the only way that he can.
That is too bad; I love Hugh Laurie but, I don`t like his House character or that horrible American accent, lol! The show would have been watchable if he had used his real accent.
I am using a cane following foot surgery. I am pretty much doing what this young lady said, but before I tried you tube I was wondering if there might be a video for how to use a cane properly, I’m so pleased that you made this, you really help people, thank you.
my moms knee isn't doing well. her knee doctor told her that she needs surgery. they gave her a cane for now but she didnt know how to walk with a cane. I had her to watch this video with me. thank you doctor Jo Jo I love you!!!!
Thank you so much Dr. Jo. I was beginning to think that I had it all wrong, but after watching your video, I found out that I was doing it right all along. I am suffering from peroneal nerve palsy and was so afraid that I was going to fall flat on my face that I bought a cane, but lo and behold, I thought I was an idiot that I could not master something as "easy" as walking with a cane. Thank you, I now know that I had it right all along. Best of luck to you.
Wish I had seen this when I had my knee injury. I had been using my cane wrong this whole time! I was watching this video today because, though my knee is much better, I'm an actor and I'm in a performance where I need to realistically portray a man who has a leg injury. Great video for both people who are actually injured and people who need to understand the how's and why's of everything.
My 34 year-old girlfriend needed help using her first cane due to a foot injury, and I was mindblown that even I didn’t know how to use something as simple as a cane lmao your video was very informative, and helped a lot. She is having a blast with her cane now.
Good luck to you. I know being in a cast is pretty terrible!! Hopefully your shoulder is okay. If you are 6 months out of your surgery, then you probably just irritated it! I have some shoulder exercises too if you want to check them out.
just recovering from total knee replacement and trying first time with one crutch instead of two. had no idea how to use it . thank you so much for your help xx
That makes so much sense! I was trying out a cane and using it on the side of my injured leg. I don’t know why I wasn’t thinking of using it on the other side! Clearly I use my right arm to grab rails and furniture to support my left leg. Thanks so much for this!
hello dr.jo! im a nursing grad and im about to take my board exam this december. honestly speaking, im still confused about the uses of any assistive devices. so THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!
I just started using one. A quad cane & it really helps with pain. Need right hip replacement so Dr Jo's videos taught me how to use it. I find I'm tripping over my cane when turning left into a room . So am now paying closer attention to be sure I rotate the cane to the left so it's base is not where I will trip over it. Assume if using the cane in my right hand, I'd need to be careful turning to the right. Dr Jo's videos are the best!
First of all I like to say thank you for making this video. This is my first time discovering your site and I definitely appreciate you giving a lesson on how to properly walk with a cane. I just wanna say thank you
I´m about to get my cane in a few days and I was searching for walking advices for a while. Not one kept it simple and short as you, so your video wa really helpful. thanks a lot!
Thanks for this! I need a cane for my upcoming cruise due to me having a 5th metatarsal displaced fracture of my left foot at the end of February. I wanted to make sure I was doing it right, I told my mom and husband it was supposed to be on the opposite side of my injury. Stinkin' House confusing people!
This was so helpful! I rarely use a cane but my knee was killing me!! My husband uses one more often. Your video help me use it properly, but it also showed him that he's been using it wrong for a very long time!
Glad I found this! I have my L5 and s1 bulged and irritating my sciatica nerve, can barely walk. Just got a cane was so confused how to use it correctly :)
I just purchased a cane from Rote-Aid because my knee is bothering me, (lots of years of tennis, and putting on some weight doesn’t help, LoL!). I was looking at the directions and it said use on opposite side of pain, and I didn’t believe it. But your video proved it correctly! Thank you very much!!!
Go on the offense for sure!! You could probably easily do a one legged swing move without much difficulty defending your injury and kicking butt at the same time.
I have an upcoming practical examination tomorrow on how to use crutches and canes properly (Instructing your patient) and this video really did help me a lot. Thanks DR.JO! :)) Physical Therapy Student : Shanneil Togle Philippines
I am so glad I found your video. I severely injured my left leg and I need a cane but wanted to make sure I wasn't doing more harm then good. Thank you!!! Blessings!!
I was hit by a car while on my motorcycle and way quite mangled up. The Drs. gave me a cane and said once my casts were removed and I was healed up, Id require a cane for stability and balance the rest of my life. Im glad you took the time to explain how to use one properly because with my injuries, I wasn't able to be shown. That was in 2003. This feels natural and secure
Than you so much for this - I have trochanteric bursitis. I couldn't see my ortho doc - had to see his P.A. She told me to use the SAME side. She also said I have scoliosis. ALL of the back specialists I've been to see told me I do not have scoliosis - that's just something that chiropractors tell you in order to set up a "Program" that will heal you. I appreciate your info.
Thanks Doctor Jo, on how to walk with a cane properly. I'm getting around much better since I saw your video. Being afraid of losing my balance is a thing of the past. Thanks again!!
Looking into a cane to relieve some pressure on my foot, which gets sore easily due to an old injury. This video was helpful for sizing and ensuring I use the proper gait when my cane comes in. Thank you for the assistance.
Hello Dr Jo. Very helpful teaching videos thanks so much. I notice i am sometimes stumbling over my quad cane so paying closer attention to figure out my problem. Googled the topic & this seems common. Anyway, for me, I have cane on left & realize that turning left to go into a room or to walk left around chair to sit on it, etc was my issue. The cane was still planted and i realized as I turned my body left & stepped with left foot, the cane was still facing the direction I was walking & the front right foot of the quad was right there in front of my left toe. So now, I'm mindfully turning left by concentrating on turning the cane & planting it ready for right foot. Presume would trip going right if cane were in my right hand due to problems with left. Please do a video on turning corners using the cane. I haven't had surgery yet but am focusing on making the right habits while waiting. You are a terrific teacher.
I'm 21 with a suspected hypermobile connective tissue disorder. Recently realized I'm going to have to change how i live or else my condition will only worsen. I'm looking into trying out a cane and this is a great guide on how to use one. Thank you!
I use a cane and it never occurred to me that no one ever showed me how to use it. My doctor just gave it to me after I had my hip surgery. I never thought that I could be using it wrong :-( Thank you Dr. Jo for doing this video. I am now using my cane correctly.
Thank you so much for this video i was using is wrong..i am on a walker at the moment but am trying to convert to the walker slowly. I feel both legs are my bad legs but, the broken one has rods in it and also broke front and back of pelvis and hips in 5 areas. The surgeon said the leg that has the rods are my strongest leg so i needed a little incite and you really helped thank you Dr. Joe! I have now found a new website for how too's on medical questions! God bless!
Hmm. It could be several things. Have you gone to see a doctor yet for x-rays, etc.? It could be arthritis. Usually people feel a dull achy feeling with it, but it could also be an injury to your labrum. Do you ever feel any catching for clicking? How does it feel when you are stretching? I have some hip stretching and strengthening videos if you want to check those out!
That was very informative. Thank you so much. Just got home from hispital and could balace that arm. You said it. The cane was too high. In addition, was not walking cane at same time of injured knee. Now my balance is great and I have less pain and arm not shaking now. Thank you!!!

Fell off a horse last week broke my left upper arm and wrist. Also injured my left hip this video helps. Thank you
You're welcome.
Very Useful. Thank you!
Holy cow!! I bought a cane today because I injured my left foot and I just knew I was using the cane incorrectly. Your video set me right and now it's so much easier to get around. Thank you Doctor Jo!!!💖
+gfa527 You're welcome! Good luck on your recovery!
***** You're welcome! Good luck!
Let's say we can't tell which one is our injure leg, is the same rule applied? Which is just go with whichever leg that wanna go 1st?
Azah M.S Yes. If you don't really have a weaker side, I would hold the cane in my non-dominant hand so you have your dominant hand free to use.
Ooo.. tat is so helpful of u. Thanks :)
Azah M.S You're welcome!
I hope u dun feel gross of me. Lately I feel very lazy and uncomfortable to take a shower. I can go a day without showering. I am lazy to even wash my face. It's been months I dun touch my face with cleanser, toner and moisturizer. I even kinda scare of water :(
My mum and sister already nagging of my steady uncleanliness..
You're welcome. Good luck with your recovery.
Happy Dance Marathon Day! Check out my smooth moves in the "How to Walk with a Cane Correctly" video.
Great video...thank you!
Jack Hayes You're welcome! Thank you for continuing to share my videos :-)
***** I teach my patients that all the time :-)
Denise Williams I get that for sure.
Denise Williams Agreed, or for me its a matter of relieving some load from the injured hip.
My hip and knee of the right leg are constantly painful but nobody seems to know what is wrong. I've started using a cane occasionally when I'm in too much pain to tolerate walking without it. Your video was very helpful. Thank you for sharing with us
You're welcome.
Good luck!
House does it wrong
+April Jones He does. So sad.
House and I can`t put that much weight on that side without the cane on the same side... :'(
@@drivinsouth651 Yeah to blanket claim that he simply does it wrong is very misleading and sometimes dangerous.
@@healingvisioner1 My right hip is so bad, I almost need a walker.
I am using a cane following foot surgery. I am pretty much doing what this young lady said, but before I tried you tube I was wondering if there might be a video for how to use a cane properly, I’m so pleased that you made this, you really help people, thank you.
You're welcome. Good luck with your recovery.
ಠ_ಠ
That was the best and fastest way to teach how to use the cane safely! You made it look so easy!
Exactly!! I’m only in my 30s but sciatic pain has forced me to use a cane 😭
my moms knee isn't doing well. her knee doctor told her that she needs surgery. they gave her a cane for now but she didnt know how to walk with a cane. I had her to watch this video with me. thank you doctor Jo Jo I love you!!!!
You're welcome! :-)
Best of luck to you.
viki stevenson You're welcome, and thank you! I am glad this helped ease your mind that you were doing it right all along! Good luck to you too!
You're welcome!! I'm glad it helped. Good luck!!
My 34 year-old girlfriend needed help using her first cane due to a foot injury, and I was mindblown that even I didn’t know how to use something as simple as a cane lmao your video was very informative, and helped a lot. She is having a blast with her cane now.
Glad it helped.
Good luck to you. I know being in a cast is pretty terrible!! Hopefully your shoulder is okay. If you are 6 months out of your surgery, then you probably just irritated it! I have some shoulder exercises too if you want to check them out.
I just tore my meniscus in my left knee and my doctor recommended a cane in the interim and thanks for the video. Thanks, Dr. Joe and Go Gamecocks!!!
You're welcome. GO Gamecocks!!
just recovering from total knee replacement and trying first time with one crutch instead of two. had no idea how to use it . thank you so much for your help xx
You're welcome! Good luck with the rest of your recovery!
That makes so much sense! I was trying out a cane and using it on the side of my injured leg. I don’t know why I wasn’t thinking of using it on the other side! Clearly I use my right arm to grab rails and furniture to support my left leg. Thanks so much for this!
You're welcome!
hello dr.jo! im a nursing grad and im about to take my board exam this december. honestly speaking, im still confused about the uses of any assistive devices. so THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!
Hi! I’m just about to start on the adventure of using a cane. Thank you for this upbeat tutorial! Stay well!
You're welcome!
I just wanna say thank you
You are amazing. Thank you made it simple. I'm a 100% disabled Veteran and my nurse and dr had no idea how to teach me this.
Thanks, and you're welcome.
Thanks doc Jo! You presented the information in a clear and enjoyable way.
You're welcome, and thanks!
I´m about to get my cane in a few days and I was searching for walking advices for a while. Not one kept it simple and short as you, so your video wa really helpful. thanks a lot!
You're welcome! Good luck.
Molly Krause You're welcome! Good luck!
Thanks Dr. Jo. I just received my cane and wasn't sure how to use it. Now I do. Thank you Doc. Armando from Miami FL
You're welcome.
Glad I found this video. I had a cerebral aneurysm rupture and stroke too. Now, I know how to properly use my cane! Thank you.
You’re welcome!
This was so helpful! I rarely use a cane but my knee was killing me!! My husband uses one more often. Your video help me use it properly, but it also showed him that he's been using it wrong for a very long time!
I'm glad it helped!
You're welcome! I hope it helps.

I've purchased a cane for my mom and she doesn't know how she use it but by your explanation here she can do it in the right way . Thanks a lot
You're welcome.
I am so glad I found your video. I severely injured my left leg and I need a cane but wanted to make sure I wasn't doing more harm then good. Thank you!!! Blessings!!
+LadybugJenn805 You're welcome! Good luck!
Thank you! I had the cane on the correct side but wasn't following my injured leg, so I was a little unsteady. So grateful that you posted this video.
You're welcome! Good luck!
I'm glad it helped.
You're welcome. I hate that a healthcare professional is telling the wrong way to do things :-(
You're welcome! Good luck with your practical!
Thanks Doctor Jo, on how to walk with a cane properly. I'm getting around much better since I saw your video. Being afraid of losing my balance is a thing of the past. Thanks again!!
Betty Crawford You're welcome! I'm so glad it has helped!
Looking into a cane to relieve some pressure on my foot, which gets sore easily due to an old injury. This video was helpful for sizing and ensuring I use the proper gait when my cane comes in. Thank you for the assistance.
You're welcome.
My Mom bought me a cane and I did not know how to use it or which hand to hold the cane in. Your videos have been really helpful to me! 💕
Glad it helped!
i currently have spinal stenosis with left leg weakness n have a cane n u saved my life bc i had no clue how to even begin ty much!!
You're welcome!
You're welcome, and thanks.
Thank you for making it so simple. Hernia surgery coming up was told it may be helpful
You're welcome.
I'm 21 with a suspected hypermobile connective tissue disorder. Recently realized I'm going to have to change how i live or else my condition will only worsen. I'm looking into trying out a cane and this is a great guide on how to use one. Thank you!
You're welcome!
I use a cane and it never occurred to me that no one ever showed me how to use it. My doctor just gave it to me after I had my hip surgery. I never thought that I could be using it wrong :-(
Thank you Dr. Jo for doing this video. I am now using my cane correctly.
+Cudjoe Wms You're welcome! I am glad it helped.
God bless!
You're welcome! I'm glad they are helping. Good luck.
You always learn something new...I had a totally wrong guess as to which side the cane should be on.
Ok now I get why using a cane was making it harder.
Thank You for instructions like this .... it makes life a easier... Much Love
I am glad it helped! Good luck!! I hope you get out of the boot soon!!
Hmm. It could be several things. Have you gone to see a doctor yet for x-rays, etc.? It could be arthritis. Usually people feel a dull achy feeling with it, but it could also be an injury to your labrum. Do you ever feel any catching for clicking? How does it feel when you are stretching? I have some hip stretching and strengthening videos if you want to check those out!
thank you so much your video corrected my poor technique and the simple stability exercises are making my back and hips feel brand new thanks again
Thank you very much for your input. I will do what you suggested. I've already started to practice with my cane.
Randal Santiago You're welcome! Good luck!
That was very informative. Thank you so much. Just got home from hispital and could balace that arm. You said it. The cane was too high. In addition, was not walking cane at same time of injured knee. Now my balance is great and I have less pain and arm not shaking now. Thank you!!!
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped!
