I'm an experienced driver, and find your videos very helpful. My instructor told me about this braking technique when I was learning. Thanks a million.
Thank you so much! I need to learn proper braking technique, and with the way the information is presented in this video, I feel I have a mental grip on how to execute gentle braking. I am so excited to get back in the car and practice.
I learnt from road craft book which is for professional drivers that releasing the accelerator pedal and using engine braking is better than using your brakes to start with then nearer to the junction or hazard apply a bit of brake to get the speed needed and then a gear suitable for the speed doing. Allowing the engine to slow itself down(engine braking) reduces wear and tear on the vehicle and uses less fuel than braking
We’d love to make a video about hilly driving, but where we live it’s very flat! The recommended technique is to use one gear lower than normal for your current speed, as this will give more power uphill, and more control downhill. 👍🏼
Thing is say if you’re braking for a roundabout and there is a bend just before it, you would do all your braking before you steer into the bend but then you would have to brake again to stop for traffic emerging from the right, so really you have double braked to stop. My old man who was a class 1 Advanced driver said double braking is amateur and poor.
In that situation we would probably brake continuously around the bend and up to the junction, but adjust our braking force as needed. As long as the car is safely in full control then that’s fine.
Use the brake for slowing down, and use the clutch for changing gear and stopping. Normally we brake before using the clutch, but at low speed we might push both together sometimes.
Best videos... please upload these things like "changing oil engine tutorial also because your method of teaching is just brilliant.... 5 stars....thumpsUp
+ahsan rasheed Thanks for the 👍🏼! We never actually change our engine oil ourselves, as we take our car to a garage for servicing, but thanks for the suggestion though.
Advance Driving School .but it is necessary question in license test as we can say that it is compulsory.... So plz work on license test questions... because how many time you will go to others to check your oil, brake oil and small things like that....????
+ahsan rasheed Oh, we CHECK our oil (and other fluids) regularly, but never CHANGE them ourselves, as our car has a 20,000 mile service interval. We have covered all the checks in our 'Show Me, Tell Me' videos 👍🏼
+mahabubul hoque bhuiyan No, there is no need to lift off the brake pedal before changing gear. Sometimes we keep braking whilst changing gear (if driving downhill) but at other times we won't need to - so just do whatever seems best for the situation.
We might need to brake first when driving down a hill or when junctions are close together, but otherwise we try to follow the MSM routing - so should indicate before braking.
Hey i have question is it a good idea that you put your car in neutral and ghost to the stop light and gentle brake ?? because they always told me to stay in a gear in case an emergency happens ??
+Dr4g0nW00d The car should always have a gear selected when rolling, as this gives more control of our speed when slowing + the option of speeding up again if needed. (You were taught correctly!)
Because we push the clutch pedal down to disconnect the engine from the gearbox. This video might help explain: Giving Way at junctions: th-cam.com/video/8NeJZFiMwzQ/w-d-xo.html 👍🏼
Thanks again for the informative video, always helpful!! I would like to know if is it good to apply a full clutch as Iam breaking slighty when driving 85km/H? as I have heard most drivers saying applying full clutch when breaking ...makes the car run faster and its not safe
It can be dangerous to push the clutch pedal down unnecessarily, as it reduces our control over our car. This video explains more: How To Avoid Coasting | Learn to drive: Car control skills th-cam.com/video/UT9c4QwZd7c/w-d-xo.html
The video needs to be edited to be accurate. At 0:28, it shows g-Force meter at 0.4G yet foot is completely off the brake pedal. This inaccuracy shows at many instances, for example, foot off brake at 0.1 and 0.0 G. Also, the captions doesn't match the readings explained. Would've been great vid otherwise
The readings on the G-force meter are provided by the camera, and are clearly a little inconsistent at times. We don’t really think it matters enough to re-edit the video though!
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thank you so much.. Instead of having to record and see later, I want one to monitor my brakes live and also if you know anything to for clutch monitoring, like how harsh I moved off (left my clutch)?
We should only push the clutch pedal if we need to change gear or stop the car. Disengaging (pushing) the clutch unnecessarily will reduce our control over the car, so should be avoided. This video might help: How To Avoid Coasting th-cam.com/video/UT9c4QwZd7c/w-d-xo.html
Advance Driving School Yh maybe 'feather' wasn't the best term but now you've explained it makes sense.... good video as usual though... keep it up (I passed a year ago and still watch your videos)
Feather comes from the practice of feathering the propellers on an aircraft with that option, where the blades of the propeller can be turned in such a way that their surface is not causing drag when that engine no longer is functioning, the edge of the prop. is presented as to the airflow and so the result is a smoother flow of air and hence less resistence.
You videos are really helpful ! I just wanted to know when the cluch should go down , how many MPH do you have to be driving at . In this video when slowing down and stopping the clutch was used around 40 MPH is that not too soon my understanding is 30MPH and under?
Thanks. When stopping, the speed to put the clutch down will vary depending on the gear currently selected. We should push the pedal down when the engine revs are low, so look at the rev-counter and wait until about 1000-1500rpm 👍🏼
Hello, is it a good idea to downshift while braking? Usually, when I need to slow down before entering a city, I downshift and let the motor slow down while lightly braking, is it a good way to slow down or will it damage the clutch? Thanks in advance for response.
+stepanex As long as the braking is gentle there shouldn't be a problem. However it should be avoided when braking hard, as the car is unbalanced by the weight transfer towards the front wheels - which could then lose traction when changing gear.
+stepanex Yes, exactly. Racing drivers get around this problem by using a technique called 'heel & toe' to rev-match whilst braking, but we don't feel comfortable recommending this to less experienced drivers on the road. Watch our video about 'Rev-Matching' for more information 👍🏼
I already saw it. I was trying to understand the rev matching for like a day now and I finally understood the pros of rev matching and how to properly perform it from your video. Thanks for all your videos, short and easy to understand.

the term "to feather" is used for car pedals, in daily talking or in motorsports. So it is the best term.

Feathering the brakes means to ease off the brakes a little, so we are braking more gently. The car should still stop, but really smoothly.
