    Ninh explains, the Rules of Roller Derby ... again.
    This was uploaded previously, but someone took exception to an image I found on Google.
    Taken down by TH-cam, uploaded minus said picture.

    I have played roller derby for years. This is a great video to show to new people. HOWEVER there are two ERRORS in the audio commentary.
    1. during a star pass the helmet cover is not "taken by the pivot from the jammer" that would be a penalty. It should state that the helmet cover is removed by the jammer from her own helmet and handed (legally) to the pivot.
    2. the correct description for re-entry to the track after a hit out is that a skater must enter behind the person who hit her out and anyone who was in front of her when she was hit out. The video states that they must re-enter behind the pivot, which is not correct.
    Thanks

      Hi Jenna.
      1) So we disagree with grammar - the gist is still the same.
      2) Yes, I admittedly got that wrong. Annotation on the screen should have corrected it.
      Thanks.

      I loved everything about this video except those two things! I was looking for a simple easy to understand video for my freshies but I fear this will confuse them because of that 😞

    • @BratFyre
      @BratFyre 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      #1 isn't a 'grammar' thing, it's actual wording that matters. What you said implies they can just come and whip it off the helmet. There's a big difference from being able to take it off the jammer's helmet and being passed it by the jammer. The gist is not the same, it creates a vastly different message.

      Thanks Jenna N. I'm thinking about getting back into derby after several years and the game has certainly changed. This video also states you cannot "hit" or "slam"? Can you please help me understand the difference? ty

    • @alinwonderland
      @alinwonderland 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@commodoreNZ That portion is also inaccurate. I think he meant you cannot hit or slam them into the ground.. I'm thinking he meant in the manner of pushing? But, you can still hit and slam your body into an opposing skater using legal blocking zones. I hope that helped and that you're back on skates!

    When I was a kid growing up in the late 60's, early 70's, Roller Derby was much different. First thing, teams were mixed with men & women players. You had both on the same team. Second, it was looked upon as something like Pro Wrestling. The whole point of the sport seemed to be an opportunity to watch girls fight with each other. Fights broke out all the time, but they were fake, like Pro Wrestling. They used to also have heel roller derby players and babyface roller derby players, like in wrestling. Each team would have a cute girl, and she'd be the babyface, and then they'd have some big moose heel girl who'd go after the babyface on the other team and beat her up, and big fights would break out, with kicking, punching and scratching. The tracks were always banked tracks. Never saw a flat track in roller derby before, so you'd have roller derby players getting thrown up and out of the track (this was the job of the men players), like wrestlers are thrown over the ropes and out of the ring. It was considered a completely bogus sport like pro wrestling, and fans were considered low brows and peckerwoods. It was very popular in the early days of TV when they had nothing else to show, but by the 70's was relegated to being shown on tape on early Saturday mornings. Here in NYC, they used to show it Saturday mornings on WOR Channel 9, which was kind of the low rate local independent station in the area. I don't know if nowadays they play it straight and for real, but back then it was pretty much pro wrestling on skates and a hoot to watch if you were 8 years old.

      Yes, I think you're referring to Roller Jam - that was an extreme (and sometimes staged) version of Roller Derby.
      Fun times.

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NinhLyUK
      Actually, I'm talking about before Roller Jam. It was just plain roller derby and that's what roller derby was at the time. There was no other more real or serious version of it. I'm not familiar with Roller Jam, but it sounds like something that came along later trying to revive the "sport", because by the mid 70s it was dead and you didn't see it anywhere on TV.

    • @brutaldomcom
      @brutaldomcom ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m fascinated with the history of this sport and how on earth it first got popular, so I’m glad to hear from someone who remembers seeing the original.
      Roller derby is unique among sports in that it basically began its life as “sports entertainment” but has since evolved into a legitimate competition.
      I’m sure some “staged” roller derby outfits still exist out there but most roller derbies you see today are legit competitions with rules, sanctioned by a governing body (the WFTDA is the largest.)
      RollerJam was an attempt to revive the (staged) Roller Derby-type show to a late-90s audience. It aired on the same network as WWE (TNN) during their late 90s boom, so it’s obviously very influenced by where late 90s wrestling was at the time (sometimes to the show’s detriment.)

    Great explanation.
    There only issue: a player blocked or pushed out of bounds must re-enter the track behind the player that hit them out, or three player that was forward of them. The pivot is not vital for a track cut to o occur.
    You can find this information in the WFTDA rules, under section 4.2.2 (gaining position).

    Loved this! However, if a skater leaves the track (by force or otherwise) they must re-enter behind any skater that had superior position at the time of their track exit. Not just the pivot. This means skaters with superior position (hips in front of) to the skater that exited the track can skate back on the track to draw the person further back, giving their team more time to get set up and tiring out that person just a little. Great video!!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  6 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      i remember in the 90's, I think it was a more equal sport.
      Then it died a horrible death and has now re-emerged as a female dominated sport.
      I'm sure there are men's leagues around, but they are few and far between compared to the women.

      I guess it depends on the region and sport traditions there. It happens to every sport actually. Take Soccer for example, in every country in the world is a men's dominated sport, except in the USA where women are the better players. Field Hockey is a women's dominated sport in most of Europe, but in India and Pakistan it is a men's dominated sport.

    When I first came across roller derby I was disappointed that there is no ball in the game. But then again, when I see football I think "what's the use of running after some stupid ball", hehe.
    But roller derby has one cool thing: to invent crazy player names. That should be the main feature. I could play a roller derby pen-and-paper rpg...

    • @NinhLyUK

      Legal. The jammer then has to come back onto the track behind the last opposing blocker.

    If the jam is the only part of the game where teams can score points, then what happens between jams, and what causes them?

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Whistle blows, clock stops and it's a chance for teams to change players and get back to the start lines.

    • @Emper0rH0rde
      @Emper0rH0rde 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So it's a sport with a lot of timeouts?

    • @mhaseldennewman
      @mhaseldennewman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's a game made up of 2min jams (unless called off early by a lead jammer). In between jams is a 30sec period to change players, it's an extremely fast paced game. teams get 2 timeouts to use to regroup/strategise/have a breather

    • @phil562
      @phil562 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Emper0rH0rde American Football has the same exact concept. In both sports there are periods of roughly 30 seconds between end of play and start of play. Those are not actual time outs even though play is temporarily stopped to allow teams to set up for the next play.

    • @martinsoucy1185
      @martinsoucy1185 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1
