That sounds like a fun job! Can you explain to me why I find inline skating really intuitive but I basically look like Mike when I put on roller skates?
@@Grey_Duck In-line skates are longer front-to back. This gives you a longer platform, and more stability. With quad roller skates, the front set of wheels is closer to the back set, and so you are much more likely to get out of balance, either to the front (and fall on your knees) or back (and fall on your butt, as Mike Rowe kept doing.) Also, when you tip an in-line skate sideways, it keeps tracking pretty straight forward. But if you tip your ankle in a quad roller skate, the wheel trucks pivot so that you are on a curve. This gives them a smooth, maneuverability that is great for dancing in a roller rink, but can surprise an in-line skater who is not used to it. On in-lines, if we want the skate to follow a curved path, we have to "smear" the wheels a little, by forcing them to turn with "body English". Anyway, your in-line skating skills will serve you very well on quads. You just have to adapt to them through practice. Try to keep your weight more centered front to back, and play with tipping your ankle and gliding a curve on the quads. You'll get the hang of it! :)
I love watching roller derby. I am part of the team as their medical team. They scare the crap outta me with the abuse their bodies take, but I have huge respect for what they do and how they do it. So much fun!!
Dang Mike. that's a good way to break a hip!! Those women are fierce. I wouldn't do that for anything because I enjoy my teeth...and what little ego I have. Another great episode!
I feel for Mike. I always wore a tailbone pad (& hip pads) and strongly believe tailbone pads should be required. Roller derby is more than a hobby or sport, it's a lifestyle ❤
Another epic episode Mike!! I have LOVED rollerskating my entire life, unfortunately I lost my entire left leg 6yrs ago, so sadly no more skating for me. But I LOVE watching Roller Derby, how women can be so tough and brutal yet be having a blast doing it. Thank you so much for such an entertaing ep. Peace and Love from Australia
I've been a modern banked track derby fan for over 13 years now and have been involved in flat-track derby for over a 11 years. But, I remember watching old school banked track derby (think LA T-Birds) as a kid. Mike is a man of a certain age like me and I find it hard to believe he never encountered roller derby before in his life.
Because it's incredibly violent and dangerous. Most people just don't like to see woman getting hurt. Also, the vast majority of the skaters are lesbians so not much attraction for the remaining red-blooded real men who like and sustain most sports. It just has to much going against it.
@@riverpirate1022violence and danger is a sell point if anything. look at tackling in football, literal fights in hockey, how about one of the biggest money makers boxing, literally a competition of people beating each other up. this just doesnt have the money behind it like those do.

I saw some roller derby years ago when I was young and thought it was brutal, nonsensical rubbish. But just hearing it explained by Ringer to Mike, I finally understand the fun of it. I’m 70, so I’m never gonna participate, but at least I understand the adventure and excitement of it now. Thank you so much, Mike, for all the sh… jobs you have done, are doing and will continue to do, until they finally kill you, or at least put you in a wheelchair for life! Out of all thing crazy things you have done at your age this is the most dangerous, stupid thing you have attempted. These Ladies are tough, and have much respect for them. So go nurse your bruises, body and self respect. Great job Wildman.
Big Fan. In my 60’s, remember 1st being introduced to Roller Derby as a kid in Detroit with the Thunderbirds on tv. Glad to see RD is still going strong across the country today. Many Blessings 🙏🇺🇸
My Daughter described it as, "Having your Coolest Aunt take you drinking, on your 21st Birthday". My Emily played in Collage in Va., and then in SD, and SF. 20+ lights out, concussions ended it for her. Should have told some Dad jokes Mike! lol!
I just hit 40 and it would be close to suicide for me to try it because of what I've put my body through. What do you do to pass the time? I crochet but I think I need something else.
I loved watching Mike learn how to Roller Derby. The pillow strapped to his butt was epic! He did very well for a newbie and I would pay good money to see him compete with the Derby Dolls.
I love everything Mike Rowe does. He is an amazing man & a very special human being. The roller derby girls kick a$$. You ladies are incredible! Keep up the great work. Be safe ya'll❤
Mommy Dearest #2, Resort City Roller Dolls, Rocktown Rollers, Mid Atlantic Roller Derby and CoVa were my teams. WFTDA. The awesome ladies from SanDiago flew to Virginia Beach to skate with us about ten years ago. In my twelve years in Derby, I never got over how empowering this sport is, how inclusive the players are, the respect all players seem to have for one another. This episode was accurate in depicting the sport, it’s hard work. Our teams spent the first couple months training how to fall to avoid injuries for each new skater. Four nights a week were spent doing endurance training, one on skills and bouts. It was hard work, but I wouldn’t have traded it for the world. Thank you for trying our sport.
I do flat track roller derby and have off an on since 2009. I don’t think I could do a jam on a banked track! Thank you for showing our underground community some love ❤
I have hated Roller Derby since the 70’s when my besties brother thought everyone needed to be slammed into the rails in daily life. So glad to see everyone having so much fun. 😊
My mom played roller derby until a fateful accident - broke most bones in her hand and her tail bone .... had to give it up after that. She was fearless in her life too. No one 'rolled over' Mom ....
I watched Roller Derby every Saturday night as a kid and wanted to be a Roller Derby Queen when I grew up. I'd skate round and round in our basement. 😎
Back in the day, there used to be a program on Saturdays that had different teams competing. It was a blast my late mother thought it was just incredibly fun to watch.
I've known a few roller derby gals from ohio, and I am glad they have a way to hit hard and not be judged. Awesome sport? Or past time or whatever, I hope it lasts for many generations to come.
The comradeship, the bravery and skill of these women. Seeing women take one for the team and perver-ing on them at the same time. As a man I think it's a great sport.
What's up from Tampa, Florida! I'm relearning to inline skate after 20 years, painfully because the company I bought my skates from sent skate boots that are a size too small and I didn't notice until after the return policy ran out, and this brought so much joy to me. Showing the non-skateboarding skating in such a great light! I plan to visit my local roller derby's privately ran skateshop eventually and buy at least one thing to show support. What's more, I might watch a game every now and then now! I plan to aggressive skate, not touching quad skates or anything close to derby. But I plan to support my local derby team even more than I planned to before!
Who did you buy your skates from? Too small is a no-go. Get yourself to Skater's Choice inside United Skates on Armenia Rd. (in Tampa). They will help you get setup with skates that actually fit and may even take your old skates on consignment.
Mr. Rowe, I could never get the knack of quad skates, even when I was a kid. But when the inline skates came along, I was a natural. You are doing GREAT! I loved watching roller derby when I was a kid. I liked watching the women more than the men. But it seemed to me that the women back then looked like linemen. These gals are cute, ... and brutal. Great show.
Yea most roller derby woman are not attractive, and also mostly lesbians. It's a big reason the sport never made it big time. That and not enough men like watching women get hurt, I know I don't just like they have no business in combat or law enforcement. Woman are to be protected, treasured, and honored for the life givers they are.
