@@stephenfike5835 I don't think that would add a noticeable amount of "useful" energy to the system. If hot water is more compressible than cold water then yes, it would allow having more energy at the same pressure but idk if that's the case and it might be the opposite just as well (or not a significant difference either way).
In many other circumstances pushing the water's temperature to boiling point would create pressure, possibly a lot of it, which could cause mayhem, but here you don't need that, you already have a massive press to generate that pressure and it already is more capable than what the piston seals can take.

@@McSpicyYTThis I do not know. I imagine any fluid at high enough pressure would produce results. Water jets are commonly used as it has no vapor/Fumes, non explosion hazard, and easy to clean up as well as not hazardous to people working around it, as far as breathing in vapors etc., not to mention extremely cheap (at least for the water....the machines can be quite expensive) the water jets can cut through flesh very easily if one was careless. (They cut steel) The cutting is laser precise. There are many videos on YT that show these incredible machines. 🙂 They have machines used in metal fabrication shops to make parts for custom motorcycles, metal signs, reproducing damaged parts, metal artwork, etc., etc. Plain water is used for many softer materials. "Abrasive jets", where and abrasive material is injected into the stream of the jet, is used to cut harder materials such as glass, stone, steel etc.

A suggestion for fittings to experiment with: female-female reducer and coupler fittings! Take the size you have now and adapt it to the next size up, and the next size down.
So you have the piston -> male hydraulic adaptor -> f/f coupler (to one size down, or to same size, or to next size up) -> plug
You could use hydraulic female-female couplers as well, if they exist (or just steel), and cut a groove on the lathe, so they will fail at the groove!

One thing you could do to make something fly, if you wanted to spend the machine time, is make a mini version of the big piston, but instead of the rings being on the head, they're on the back end of the shaft, and you could put a pin through the tube and shaft meant to break at a certain pressure. You could even probably calculate the exact diameter of pin you'd need to get the absolute highest pressure the main chamber can handle.

Nice video, I wonder if you could turn that piston/cylinder into a water jet cutter?

Use a short brass pipe and cap it with steel, and score it around the smooth part to create a stress line.

If you want reliable failures, turn down some caps so the end wall of the cap is thinner. With some testing you can choose the pressure the cap wall fails. The whole wall, a metal coin basically, will fly.
