- A pilgrimage trek completing the outer kora circuit around Mount Kailash, also visiting several sites around Lake Manasarovar. From Kathmandu we flew in a small plane over the western Nepal Himalayas to the mountain village of Simikot. From here we aclimatising to the altitude as we trekked over Nara Bhanjyang La reaching the Chinese border at Hilsa in 6 days walking. After a night camping on the shore of Manasarovar we spent 5 days on our Kailash kora. Finally after two more nights by the sacred lake we returned across the Tibetan plateau, with views of Shishapangma from Lalung La, making a road crossing back into Nepal at Zang Mu. The trip was from 21st September - 11th October 2013.

Thank you Stephen. I feel nostalgic! I have been to Kailas- Manas Sarovar Yatra three times, 1995, 1997 & 1998 from Calcutta. But my route was different from you. It was Kathmandu > Zhangmu > Saga> Zhongba > Paryang > Mayum-La> Hor> Manas Sarovar (Tso Mavang ) > Darchen and back in the same route. 'Kora' was not permitted to us because of the high risk of developing deadly High Altitude Pulmonary & Cerebral Edema, as we did not get enough time and trekking opportunity to acclimatize our bodies. You did not face the problem because of the Simikot> Purang trek when your bodies got chance to adjust. So many things have changed since then! We had to cross the Yarlung Sangpo (Downstream in India, it is one of the largest river in the world, Brahmaputra!) near Saga on a floating barge, along with our cars. Hor, Darchen and the whole of that Parkha Valley were desolate places with only a few Chinese permission offices....wild... beautiful...and dangerous... truly, Kailas- Manas Sarovar was the Shang-ri-la of The Lost Horizon !

I was also very very fortunate and blessed to have been to Mt.Kailas and lake Manoserover in 2012 via Kathmandu Nepal on road and not via helicopter.
Also blessed by Lord Shiva and did the outer parikrama ,kora with great difficulty with severe mountain sickness with fatigue, dizzyness, nausea ,loss of appetite and unable to walk even a few feet without falling😭😭😭😭.I did it on a horse with
The help of my dear Badu and Shri our Nepali guides who had literally carried me down on the third day of Kora walking down the holy mountain.I did it with mere prayers chanting OM NAMA SHIVAYYA through out my parikramma.🕉🕉🕉
Because of my demanding work schedule , lack of time I couldn't prepare myself for the trip.Also I was the oldest, fattest, not a very well fit person although I was medically fit to travel with no diabetics or heart conditions
I thank the almighty for this once a life time trip.Not all can go here. During my trip many other tour pilgrims were unable to go because of their health conditions at high altitudes.severe diarrhea and vomiting, unavailability of horses or severe weather conditions like blowing sand and snow storms , heavy wind and falling rocks 🥱🥱🥱
So many had stayed back in Dharsan guest houses and returned after only going round the holy lake Manoserover . Mt.Kailas can be seen all around the lake wherever you stood.

Thank You for the most comprehensive video on Mt.Kailash! It is incredibly sad to see how badly the place has been littered by humans who'd worship the sacred mountain, but litter the land all around.
Sadder still , is the invasion of another country into this sacred land, and no one raised a finger in protest :( No oil here, only spirituality, hence the deafening silence :'(

(Sad to see though, that even in this most Holy of places people just leave their garbage and plastic bottles by the side of the road. Shiva is not happy with this!)
Ive traveled India and Nepal and visited many sacred places everywhere you will find an ecological disaster, there are few bathrooms so you do it where you can, its called opened defecation so there’re is poo and pee and garbage everywhere you go, it’s perhaps like the contradictions in all of us that come from the root of the lotus submerging in the mud but the other side but in the other side a beautiful lotos floating peacefully a over the water. In the route the Mount Everest there are even bodies, many bodies of people who died trying to climb it and their remains are lying frozen right where they died. But the Kailas area in Tibet is one of the most pristine places on earth today there are lots of tourists that are in fact polluting the area. Such is life, unfortunately. It is still wonderful
