  • I know that I went out of focus in the middle of the video... Sorry.
    The "LUNCHBOX" is a dual-band VHF/UHF radio repeater pushing out up to 8W of power. It works with your Baofeng UV-5R and similar handheld analog radios! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this overview of the "LUNCHBOX" repeater. Let me know in the comments below what you want to see in our next video!

    $275 wow. Great job on the build. Definitely a great line for those who don’t understand repeater builds. There are better solutions but you make it easy for those who aren’t techy and don’t want to research cheaper alternatives. Great job

      Yeah man I’m not intentionally targeting folks who don’t understand repeaters/builds. Ask anyone - I willingly and gladly give anyone who asks advice on their own projects. $275 is well worth the price for a professional and well built product plus the support I put behind it - especially for those who would prefer not to spend hours building one themselves

      275 would be a good price point with a solar panel. They're cheap to add to your product, and look cool.
      You could even list testing lengths of time.
      Great Vid.

    I use a setup like your lunchbox for testing coverage for HT users, and for potential repeater sites. Mine is built in a .30 cal ammo can, and has an NMO connector. I also use a NMO to SO-239 adapter for external antenna use. I have a small 12v battery and "battery eliminator" for powering the radio.

      Another option would be to find a small block of FIRM Closed Cell Foam, place a small section of velcro on one side with the other attaching portion on the inside of the case, then wedge the block in place to keep the pinned plug from wiggling free. Leave the Ranger Band on as well as added insurance and the wedged foam should keep it in place, too.
      My last question has to do with extending the range of the Baofeng radios by "Daisy Chaining" multiple repeaters along a desired path.
      By this I mean can you place two (2) or more say 8-10 km apart from each Mohave device and end up with them literally repeating your transmitted signal?
      And would you hear multiple responses back with the senders voice and have to literally COUNT the "echo's" so you'd know when the furthest repeater would have triggered to make sure the message arrived X km away?
      Obviously, a LARGER repeater with significantly more power would be the answer but it would be anywhere NEAR as portable in the field.
      TIA for any answers you can provide me, assuming you even get to read this since the OP has been up over a year.
      Take care and I've now subscribed.

      If you notice that band is holding the connection into the speaker/mic port on the side which on these uv-5r's is flawed and has to be held in with "something", likely the reason for the band.

    last question I promise LOL. Do you get anything to take home with you from your classes? Like a completed antenna you make or booklet or anything? Ive seen others offer RTO courses for much less money and you get stuff to take home that you make during the class or is this just knowledge you take home with you?

    • @MojaveRepeater
      @MojaveRepeater  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually bring some goodies to hand out at the classes, but the primary value is in the knowledge that you bring home from the course. No item that I give you could replace the value I share with my students. I’m sure there are courses for much less, but I’m confident that the course we teach is worth every penny spent! I teach practical information, coming from a military background and experience in communications, that can help you apply radio concepts to what you do in a meaningful way. This is not a hobbyist course!

  • @davidhawkins847
    @davidhawkins847 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Looks like a nice unit but i see a couple design flaws you should consider addressing. Especially considering the emergency and preparedness aspect of radio comms.
    I can't tell if there is an internal battery to power everything or just the batteries on the individual components. If individual, you might add in a battery for longer life. You could easily set it up just like the external connection where both devices are fed by USB from the pack.
    Those external connections should NOT be type-A connections for convenience as that requires a somewhat non-conventional cord. Yes they are easy to get, but for simplicity it should be a typical connection port like USB-micro or the newer type-c.
    It looks like you charge the devices in the box separately. By adding the internal battery pack you could make this a single or double charge connection, all with off the shelf stuff. This would also stabilize charging from a small portable solar panel (10-40w size).
    Don't know how much available space is left over in the case but if it's built how I think, adding in a USB battery bank to the case could accommodate the power requirements and connections from the external ports if you have one that supports dual-charging.
    It looks like you're using the aftermarket 5R battery that allows USB charging. If you need a radio with the same abilities but smaller footprint look at the S9+. Alternatively maybe one of the water resistant units that uses the non-kenwood connection and secures to the radio via screw. That I don't currently have experience with so don't have a model recommendation though Baofeng does have them.

      Orientation only matters for the antenna. For the included antenna you would want it as vertical as possible. You could change the antenna to something else though, but it's not the Orientation of the case that would matter just the antenna.

    A bit naff considering the price of baofengs, as you can easily make a repeater using two, eliminating the need to hear your voice twice.

    But if you look up MURS on the FCC database it says No MURS transmitter shall, under any condition of modulation, transmit more than 2 watts transmitter power output.

    • @MojaveRepeater
      @MojaveRepeater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's correct. I should have made a clear recommendation to abide by the FCC rules. But of course, this can also be used on channels where that low power output is not a condition.

    Why do you use off set? Its a tedious obsolete function.
    You can just use, transmit and received on different frequencies in Channel mode.
    1. Set radio to frequency mode.
    2. Select the frequency to received on. (444.444)
    3. Menu - Option 28 - Delete Channel 0
    4. Menu = Option 27 - Select Channel 0 - Receiving memory
    5. Exit menu - Select frequency to transmit on. (444.888)
    6. Menu - Option 27 - Select Channel 0 - Transmitting memory.
    7. Set radio to Channel mode
    8. select Channel 0
    9. Notice + - at the top while on Channel 0
    10. Receive on 444.444 and Transmit on 444.888.

    You mentioned its a 8 watt radio , really ? Maybe you should put a meter with a 50 ohm load on it and check because all the 8 and 10 so called watt radios only put out 5 watts and at 5 watts that radio can still over heat fast so its best to go one level down on them to prevent it from burning up . Now that parrot radio setup is great if someone who wants to hear what they sound like .I have used the units on base stations so the station owners can drive around and check there coverage .

    • @bigfranksworld
      @bigfranksworld 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct. Bought a Baofeng "8 watt" radio just to test it. It barely made 4.5 watts, and that was the best it could do, and only of some frequencies. They are a cheap way to get into ham radio though.

    So you basically selling end-user radio, but in the box. Which does not really simplify anything (having no extra interface), but instead makes things worse by having an ignition sequence more complicated than small-sized helicopter. Not a great deal.
    Radio is not limited by line of sight, btw.
