Time is money, money buys time. I flew Jetstar to Hokkaido to experience a "no frills" "à la carte" carrier. I didn't have any luggage but I checked the policy online when I bought my ticket. There's just a kiosk to buy snacks, NO brewed coffee. 90% of the passengers are under 30 years old. If you want to eat something do it before you go through security. If you add all the time up it probably comes to 5 hours (see Rion's video about the train to Narita). The Peach departure area looks much nicer than Jetstar. @ 17:31 "I like it!" We used Peach to travel from Narita to Osaka in 2018. Leaving from Narita was convenient for us because we started fro my in laws house in Chiba. Personally, I would be reluctant to do that again. At Narita they had a completely separate terminal for the low cost carriers which could only reasonably be reached by shuttle bus. There was still a lot of walking involved and time wasting. I recently found your channel, Rion! Your videos are a lot of fun! I love going through your old ones. It's been 18 years since the last time I was in Japan... Thank you for your videos!
I used LCC a lot for quick short business trips where I’d only need an overnight bag and some devices. Once you’ve used it a few times, you’d know their rules and not get caught out by their extra charges. Most continents have many LCCs, Southwest, Frontier and Spirit in the US, Easy and Ryan in Europe, Airasia and CePac in SEasia and Tiger in Australia. They’re an affordable and quick option in most places where there may not be good ground transport links so if planning on seeing the world, best get used to them
Hi Rion, love this content, its very good to make the best and cheapest capsul hotel in tokyo, osaka or others place. And, i think for future you can have tour or guide for foreigner in japan. thank you, good luck!
Regarding your bag to take in airplane, just like to point out that most airlines does have a restrictions on the amount you can take in to the airplane. Be it LCC or FSC, and usually such restrictions are mentioned in the contract. As an example, like both ANA and JAL has a restriction of 1 bag + 1 personal items, must be within 10kgs.
Gentlemen's Agreements and such. The LCC airliners are not allowed to compete with JR Central's Tokaido Shinkansen. They are just given a niche, and were told to stay there. They were given handicaps… * Narita instead of Haneda * No Free Baggage * Limited Cabin Carry-on * Limited Physical Interaction
Hi Rion, Thank you for showing us the Low Cost Carrier airplane experience and for showing us Kansai Airport. It helps to know other transportation options besides using the train. Also, I had no idea that Kansai airport had a "Gourmet Avenue" food court. That's cool. I am always interested in dining options are in airports. Your travel video definitely helped me plan for my own travels to Japan.
Hello Rion! Loved the vid. It was so cool seeing the airport. Would love 💕 to see you cooking again. Hope you are feeling well. Looking forward to seeing you in the live stream. Arigato! 😄😄
I used to think about taking the plane to Osaka from Tokyo but it seemed taking more time than Shinkansen. I stayed close to Tokyo station which was take less than 10 minutes to get there and the took Shinkansen to Osaka for 2 hours and 30 minutes. When I considered to fly to Osaka, it would take 1 hour from Tokyo to Narita and I had to get there at least 1 hour before boarding time and the flight took 1 hour and 30 minute to Kansai Airport and then I would take the train to Osaka station for another 1 hour. Totally, I would take at least 4 hours and 30 minutes. So, Shinkansen is always my first option.
Agreed. The ONLY situation that where I've found LCC worth it is when you're transferring to an international flight. KIX (Kansai International) is more convenient if you're in south Osaka, but the ONLY airlines that fly KIX-NRT are LCCs. Japan Airlines and ANA will usually fly to Itami in Osaka, or Haneda in Tokyo.
That’s a good experience you shared to us. The insignificant difference of the cost is funny but at least we learned something! 😂 The ending though... 😂😂😂 I really miss going to the airport no matter how stressful it could be, but Narita Airport is just one of a kind!
Reminds me of another low cost airline my younger sister and I have used when we went to Japan - Air Asia. Low cost Flights will always have sneaky additional charges, like baggage, tax, and optional baggage insurance. Glad eventho there was extra charges for you, you still managed to save a bit of money. And you arrived in a shorter amount of time! Every penny , or shall i say yen , counts. My sister and I also had a difficult time repacking when we were leaving Japan to Malaysia because of the baggage weight. I don't think we bought alot of souvenirs, but finally we passed the weight for carry ons! but oh boy after you check in, there are so many souvenir shops around the boarding gates. Very tempting!!! A lot of passengers bought chocolates and other stuff , and when it was time to board, the staff was very strict and told them to stuff it in their bags as much as possible. I was also looking forward for the Mochi , but they gave you oranges instead ;_; I was sad too .
haha next time take japan airline / ana - they allow 2 x 23kg checked in and not so strict on airport souvenir carried by hand :) Japan have way too many souvenir to carry back :D
17:25 I remember Hong Kong's Kai-Tak… Not much space there for boarding bridges / 'jetways'. But… It was an old airport, that couldn't be updated fast enough. Of course in the next visit, I landed at Chek Lap Kok. SFO is more or less as old as Kai-Tak, the same goes for its long taxiway traffic. Narita is quite unique with its maze-like taxiway.
When you arrived at KIX, got off the shuttle bus and up the escalators, I immediately remembered the lockers on both sides of the doors, and imagined myself heading straight to the ticket machine to get my tix for JR Namba Sta.!😆 I've used KIX as my base for Peach flights to travel in Japan domestically so I still remember quite a lot even though it's been 4yrs! Although I've traveled extensively via the shinkansen, but I've used LCC a lot in Japan due to time/schedule/distance constraints - with Jetstar from Narita to Sapporo and Okinawa, and with Peach to travel from Osaka (KIX) from/to Kagoshima and KIX from Okinawa, and even internationally from Busan(Korea) to KIX. Despite the additional shuttle ride to smaller terminals, and walk from plane to terminals, it was still definitely worth it for me as I've always traveled light and hardly ever have any electronic/fragile gear to worry about. I've also booked them early enough that I only paid no more than 6,000 yen for one-way flights (1 checked baggage included). My preferred mode is still the shinkansen, but if there's time/cost/access constraints, LCC are great alternatives (atleast in Japan). 👍
Thank you. When you were at the airport I could have a brief feeling of flying to Japan... 😊 Oh, I hope it will be soon when I can fly there for real! By the way, I found your channel a week ago and the content is really great, please keep making such amazing videos. It's very inforrmative and fun! Thanks again! 👍
From Tokyo station, you will consider shinkansen. Tokyo to Narita airport is like 40 mins and you will wait inside airport for at least 1hr. I will arrive first since it takes 2:10mins for shinkansen compared to 1.5hrs by plane plus the airport waiting time plus travel to Narita. You may have a fighting chance if you go via Haneda you can cut like 30mins compared to Narita. Convenience is the extra cost if you take the shinkansen.
I flew from Tokyo to Osaka with Peach in 2018 so this really makes me feel nostalgic! I also had issues with the luggage, the weight limit is even lower than in European LCC Airlines! Once I was in Kansai International airport I took some trains to Kyoto. I was a bit stupid because I decided to take a lot of local trains instead of a direct fast train. I had to switch many times and it took extremely long. Next time I think I will take the Shinkansen!
I always saved extra money at the end of a trip so I can spend on airport shopping 😂 such fond memories. Thank you for the video and enjoy your weekend😊
Thanks for making this video, seeing how time efficient and environmentaly better it is to take the Shinkansen it's a no brainer for me. Especially with the JR PASS! Appreciare your hard work and looking forwards to the next video :D GAOOOOOOOOO
If you have lots of fragile items to bring, it is really better to take the bullet train rather than take a flight. The most ideal seat is really along the aisle
I used peach air to fly Hongkong - Fukuoka in 2019. Bought extra check-in baggage and inflight meal (really delicious gyudon I couldn't believe was plane food). I still saved a few hundred bucks compared to flying with a major airline. It was straightforward and got me from A to B. I can't to travel back to Japan again. Thank you for the videos Rion
Thank you Rion for sharing this jaunt from NRT to KIX. I'm sorry to see the International terminal so quiet too. It appears that the average traveler would break even by taking Shinkansen considering the time and cost it takes to get from downtown Tokyo to Narita, then Kansai into Osaka. The LCC carriers in many countries do grab the attention of travelers who are budget conscious for the low price of the air ticket but ultimately have add-on expenses like you experienced. I think the outstanding network of train service within Japan really makes a strong competitor to the LCC offerings within Japan. I enjoyed your video, thank you for documenting your experience. This will help future visitors to Japan to decide what domestic travel experience will work best for them. 😉
Yes - just don't arrive into KIX after the last train has gone or you'll be screwed for transport into the city (apparently taxi fares are huge as there is a big toll charge involved).
We have those small airlines here in the U.S. too. It seems cheap at first but they have fees for everything, like carry-on bag and seat assignment. By the time you add it up, it’s almost the same price; plus you have added stress and inconveniences in my opinion. This video is “a good to know” info for future travel to Japan. I wouldn’t want to take that airline for domestic travel. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your family time.
Hi Rion, great video. I believe foreign tourist can buy shinkansen tickets or multiple days pass cheaper than Japanese citizen, so shinkansen is a very good option for them.
One time when traveling by train I left my piece of luggage in the waiting booth (I was helping a family member get theirs in from the small outdoor waiting area we weren't familiar with and they would not let me get off to get mine as well) and embarked on a 20+ hour train trip with nothing but my purse and some tears. On the way home from my trip I used a shopping bag to carry the few clothing items etc I had been forced to buy and everyone kept complimenting me on how light I "packed". The whole thing was kind of stressful, but at some point I did realize what little I needed on a trip to have good time and have packed way lighter ever since. Tho I don't travel with camera equipment.
Totally agree if you want convenience, quick travel from Tokyo to Osaka but pay extra use the shinkansen but if you are not in a hurry, save some yen then choose LCC. I normally use regular airlines (PAL, JAL and ANA) from Philippines to Japan since I love Haneda than Narita due to the close proximity to Tokyo. For LCC’s I have tried the seasonal Jetstar Japan flights. Thanks for the video Rion!
While it gave you extra content,if you add the hotel fee, it was a lot more expensive than taking the train from Tokyo station! It was a new experience for you though so👍 Thanks for taking us along!
LCC airlines are mostly for light travelers. In my country I used them a lot for work travel because they're cheap and I don't carry much things. The reason they're very strict with weight is because the less weight they carry, the less fuel they will use to fly the plane, means the more savings and profit for the airlines. Fuel cost is one of the biggest chunk of the flight operational cost. Also, they want to maximize carrying passenger more than cargo coz cargo doen't yield much profit for them.
I always use cheap airlines to go to Osaka the plane always arrives at terminal 2 and by bus to terminal 1. Hope we can all travel again! Oh man I miss that Nintendo corner I know a friend there
That Kansai International Airport brings so much memories back in January 2020 and it was my first time to be in Osaka. Such a shame that it is “empty” at the moment but I hope I can visit there again soon. Thank you for the virtual tour, Rion. Love your videos!! 🇯🇵
15:22 The song is so old, most airliners now are jetplanes. Aircrafts with turbofan jet engines. No rocketplanes though. The song was already pretty old by the time of the 1998 Armageddon movie.
Thank you after watching all you went through think I would rather take the train, plus too much walking, having to find luggage not worth it to me. You help so much to decide what is best for us, much appreciated.
I've traveled with Japan for my business trips and I think LCC saving money is a joke and marketing fluff. Every airport in Japan has sort of "surcharge" for access airport with pubic transportation. Airport-bound trains are always more expensive. With Shinkansen, you literally arrive into one of the key train stations, which you need to access anyways even if you fly. Also, with luggage fees and fees for everything, LCC is not much cheaper than ANA and JAL if you factor those thin. ANA and JAL also have better flight schedules and allow you to maximize time at the destination. LCC has god-awful super early or super late departures that you end up being tied for your trips.
I used to fly internationally and domestically from NYC often ( not anymore now in pandemic ) as a photographer and me and my assistant would weigh all our bags / equipment at the studio before heading to the airport. I could see from your experience it was stressful at Narita for you. But that ticket price is so small definitely good for budget travelers. Your positive outlook and happy spirit make your travel a better experience.
travelling by shinkansen is much more convenient and comfortable(at least for me) but it's also more expensive and takes much longer even during pre-covid periods...
If the carry bag is overweight, try to wear some of the heavy clothing or take out some bigger items to be hand-held. When done measure you can put it back to the carry bag. 😁
I am also excited to ride a plane. Praying that this pandemic will end and dreaming to see Japan soon. Thank you Mr. Rion. It's somehow refreshing for me to have at least a Japan virtual tour with you after my 4 hr online class.😊🛫

They’re an affordable and quick option in most places where there may not be good ground transport links so if planning on seeing the world, best get used to them
OMG! I remember that restaurant at Kansai Airport! Their karaage teishouku is the best! I miss Japan so much I wish I could go back soon🌸
I miss flying, my last was Dec 2019 in Osaka before the Pandemic. Hope to travel back to Japan next year.
I miss flying. It is so good to see your vlog, rion. Keep on gaooo 🦁
I’m so excited for your new videos about Universal Studios Japan. Would really love to see the new rides that are now open in USJ.
Gentlemen's Agreements and such. The LCC airliners are not allowed to compete with JR Central's Tokaido Shinkansen. They are just given a niche, and were told to stay there.
They were given handicaps…
* Narita instead of Haneda
* No Free Baggage
* Limited Cabin Carry-on
* Limited Physical Interaction
I love your singing “Im leaving on a jet plane”. I also sing that when in an airport, lol.
Arigato! 😄😄
Thank you for sharing the way to travel and nice ochasuke I Food leveling
Another great experience video, Rion can you please make video using the night bus from Osaka to tokyo. 😊😊 Thank you.
Aloha Rion! Hope you have a wonderful time! Thank you!
Really like the way how you share your journey. Great content. Refreshing and educational. 👏🏼🖤
Oh yes!! same here! whenever I'm at the airport, makes me happy whenever there is Starbucks haha
Shinkansen>
That’s a good experience you shared to us. The insignificant difference of the cost is funny but at least we learned something! 😂
The ending though... 😂😂😂
I really miss going to the airport no matter how stressful it could be, but Narita Airport is just one of a kind!
Love the Mario jump! Hahaha
Hello thank you I have so many learn about your information.
i love the new music used on this vid! nice vid Rion!
You make me missing Kansai Airport. Anyway, its never boring to see Kansai Airport.
Love your hairstyle here..
Thank you. When you were at the airport I could have a brief feeling of flying to Japan... 😊 Oh, I hope it will be soon when I can fly there for real! By the way, I found your channel a week ago and the content is really great, please keep making such amazing videos. It's very inforrmative and fun! Thanks again! 👍
Rion Ishida, nice travel from Tokyo to Osaka.
Hotels used to have bathroom scales and such. Quite practical when you are setting up your baggages for tomorrow's check-in.
I love the NG footage and when ya sang "Leaving on a Jet Plane" hehe :)
9:41 I really love this place 😍
I have been waiting until the end of the video, with my fingers crossed, hoping you found some place to eat!!! it's crazy! 🤣🤣🤣
Have a fabulous day Rion. Cheers from the UK. 👍👍
I always saved extra money at the end of a trip so I can spend on airport shopping 😂 such fond memories.
Thank you for the video and enjoy your weekend😊
Terminal 1 was very nostalgic to me as I went through there 3 years ago when I flew into Osaka. I took the Haruka train into Osaka from there.
Hi Rion, Eli from Sydney Australia…I am enjoying your vids. It’s always the case with cheap airlines & that is hidden cost. Safe flight mate.
Thanks for making this video, seeing how time efficient and environmentaly better it is to take the Shinkansen it's a no brainer for me. Especially with the JR PASS!
Appreciare your hard work and looking forwards to the next video :D GAOOOOOOOOO
Peach Airlines rock, flew them a few times. Always satisfied.
If you have lots of fragile items to bring, it is really better to take the bullet train rather than take a flight.
The most ideal seat is really along the aisle
Awesome video Ishida-san!😀
Thank you for this wonderful experience you shared to us rion 🥰🦁🦁🦁
I used peach air to fly Hongkong - Fukuoka in 2019. Bought extra check-in baggage and inflight meal (really delicious gyudon I couldn't believe was plane food). I still saved a few hundred bucks compared to flying with a major airline. It was straightforward and got me from A to B. I can't to travel back to Japan again. Thank you for the videos Rion
Thank you Sir Rion! Be flying to Osaka next month.
This was very informative!
I love your enthusiasm
Another awesome video! I feel like I’m right there with you. So much great information. Thank you 🙏🏻
How do you do this so effortlessly…really appreciate the same. I don’t even like to talk while travelling, great video as always…keep it up.💐💐
So it's official your energy is contagious everytime you laughed I ended up laughing to.
Loved every minute of it thank you
I always use cheap airlines to go to Osaka the plane always arrives at terminal 2 and by bus to terminal 1.
The song was already pretty old by the time of the 1998 Armageddon movie.
cool, they have a mario section in the mall? My kids wold love that.
Thank you after watching all you went through think I would rather take the train, plus too much walking, having to find luggage not worth it to me. You help so much to decide what is best for us, much appreciated.
Thanks for sharing 🌻
So many restrictions
Is it worth it 🌈
I've traveled with Japan for my business trips and I think LCC saving money is a joke and marketing fluff.
As always, your infectious personality comes to the fore in your videos Rion. Informative and entertaining as usual 🤘
Wow not much leg space thank god your flight wasn’t very long great video again thanks .
Always watching from Phillipines. I hope we can meet your parents and brother soon in Rion's TV. And oh a house tour would be great too :)
