  • Theraphosa blondi, second pairing
As promised our second pairing of the amazing Theraphosa blondi these guys are so large and yet very gentle when pairing often displaying their huge fangs but showing no real aggression towards each other, within second successful insemination this will be the last pairing for this female so fingers crossed for a healthy egg sac in the coming months.

It's fascinating how different species have completely different sizes when it comes to Males/Females. Blondi Males clearly look like they are designed to live another day when you look at the size of them. Yes, she is a beast...but so is he! Certainly would not be an easy feat to take him out for her at all.

The one I found most fascinating, was the one male that smacked his fangs on the glass. Literally was knocking on the female’s door. 🥰

What a Pair! Both Times went so well.
She looks like a Coconut now.
So round and huge. She's absolutly massive. Promising.
Also the Male is an absolute pro.
He got her very well without upsetting her to much. Gentle Giants.

I have to say your photography is spectacular. I've had a chance to visit other spider channels and the female instantly killed her suitor. The photography isn't that great, it's too dark. Things happen too fast and you don't see anything. Your channel is by far leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else. Your beasties are so well-behaved and calm, there is enough light to see with exceptional close-up phtography. I don't see anyone using paintbrushes as you do they use metal tongs. Maybe their spiders respond in kind to their owners, which says a lot about your "way with beasties". It doesn't seem to matter to you, spiders, centipedes, scorpions they are all well-behaved and calm. It is truly astounding to watch. Thank-you for sharing!!!

I am so very pleased you’re always there, ready to separate them if anything should go wrong. I love that you protect the males from being munched. I have seen a video on a different channel & the male unfortunately was eaten. The owner didn’t even try to save him 😢 I know people say that it’s natural but as you’ve shown time & time again, that you can step in & save the males. Thank you Dave for always being on stand by for the boys. Your channel is the best out there 😊

This is why you are the one to go to for spiders.. Not only do you show the paring.. But then you go over it step by step afterwards to explain the behaviour of the siders and actions taken by you. So that there is complete understanding of what we see that is going on and not just two spider dangling, bumping and grinding.. You ,my friend, you have the spirit of the teacher. If you do not mind that I put it that way.. I guess a natural teacher would be more apropo. But what you do is a great and noble thing.. thanks David for sharing your talents with the world.. and of course the great and noble camera lady, may her cameras ever be in focus.. enjoy the week guys!

Another great video dave and camera lady! I'm so glad you're reinforcing the need to be respectful when you're pairing you're spiders. I've seen that exotic lair kids channel and you can clearly tell he doesn't really care much for the males fate during a pairing. He's usually really loud and animated proding his males to get going rather than wait for it to happen naturally. I'm sure he does it so he can have a video of his males getting eaten.

Gday from the home of Sydney Funnel Webs . Love your work , but all my English mates cry about a hot summer . Our winter temps are just slightly cooler than your summers
Come to Australia during Xmas , every day min 40 degrees Celsius and that’s just Sydney . Perth , Adelaide are situated off the Nullarbor Desert . Darwin hits min 30 degrees every day of the year, with a storm
Night is the worse - the heat makes it hard to sleep , I live in a humid hot part of Sydney - funnel webs everywhere , especially the vicious male and red backs
My mate got bitten by a red back - it was like hot melt glue gun on your skin then a panel pin nailed into the spot . Being Aussie kids we all tried it - it was confirmed max heat - hot melt glue gun is a red back spider pain .

And a thank you for sharing your handling of all of these guys, it translates to wild animals as well. I thought we'd found a baby bunny puttering around in the road on our way home from work but it was a young squirrel missing all but about an inch of his tail and I thought an eye. We got him home and into a very tall wire cat condo until I could get him to a rehabber the next evening. We used all of your techniques to get him back out of there for his transport the next day with little stress to him. He was not missing the eye but is blind and will live out his life safely with his new Mom. Would never have gone so well for him if I hadn't found your channel. 🐿❤

Amazing to see them so relaxed after a pairing. I truly think a lot of it has to do with the vibrations. When you think of it, in their natural environment, there's probably not a lot of things that'll come along during that post-insemination, and if it does, then... well, who knows. Some other youtubers I watch talk, tense up, move around and bump while the spiders are in the process. And vibrations are how they see the world! Must be like static going over your eyes or something.
But these great big giants are _so_ relaxed, start to finish. From your great conditioning of course, but the lack of "noise" from you (and the safety paintbrush!) is a major player, for sure. Putting yourself in their 8 shoes can really help you understand them better. 🙂
Question: Do you know how long these spiders' lineages go back? Did you raise them from slings? Just curious about captive-bred vs. wild-caught behavior. Great stuff as always 💙💙

Thank you 🙏, I dont know the background of these individuals but looking at them I would say they were captive bred 👍

Love these big spiders. Do the males of the T blondi live longer than the average male tarantula? You mentioned he takes food.
Considering picking up a sling or two for a long term project, but worried about the urticating hairs on these guys haha Looking forwards to the next new video!
