Northern Macedonians are Ancient Greeks!! Philip and his Son the Greek Alexander spread Greek language and Culture not Macedonian. I'm sure all of you know this lol Alexander did this through a process called Hellenization!!! When Alexander the Great expanded his empire, he established Greek city-states, appointed Greek administrators, and brought in Greeks to govern. These leaders made their regions "Greek" to gain Alexander's favor, promoting Greek culture. His approach facilitated easier governance through cultural uniformity.

@@MrAndyTrejo You need to read the primary sources. Macedon was hegemon over Greece. Why is it called the Macedonian Empire? Greeks never had an empire. The Greek forces in Alexander's army were only 7000, and he dismissed them once he had consolidated his power in Persia. He could never trust the Greeks because they revolted several times. First, Philip had to crush them at Chaeronea and force them to make him Strategos Autokrator. When he died, the Thebans, Funded by Darius III, and supported further by Athens and other smaller Greek city-states, revolted against Alexander while he was campaigning against the Illyrians and Thracians, which had forced him to draw heavily from the troops in Macedonia that were maintaining pressure on the city-states of southern Greece to keep them in subjection.
Alexander ended his campaign and moved so fast into Greece and caught the Thebans by surprise which led to the Battle of Thebes. He crushed them and razed Thebes to the ground and sold thousands into slavery; Thebes never fully recovered. The rest of the Greeks, frightened by this stopped any plans of revolting, which they were planning but hesitant to do. They conferred upon him even greater honours than they did Philip.
When Alexander was busy campaigning in Persia, the Greeks again revolted, and it was the Spartans this time. Antipater had to leave Macedon and move south to face king Agis and his Spartans, which he did and crushed them. Then again the Greeks collaborated with Memnon of Rhodes while Alexander was in Persia, to attack his supply lines but Memnon died of illness and the whole thing fell apart. The Greeks were always ready to betray Alexander even taking Persian money in the process.
      1. Why would they constantly undermine him if the campaign was for Greece?
      2. Why did he get rid of the entire 7000 Greek force, only leaving a handful of Greek generals, who were his friends, if the campaign was for Greece?
      3. Why did he not send to Greece a single coin from the treasure captured in Persia but instead sending it to Macedon?
      4. Why is it recorded in history as the Macedonian Empire and not the Greek Empire?
The Macedonians and Greeks did not have the same culture nor language. The Greeks referred to them as barbarians. The Macedonians weren't even allowed to take part in the Olympic Games, and there's no evidence of them ever taking part in the Games for at least 200 years until king Alexander I, wanting to take part in the Olympics claimed that his dynasty was founded by Perdiccas, the son of Temenus, a descendant of Heracles. Only then did the Greeks allow Macedonians to take part. You do know Demosthenes do you? Let's look at what he said to the Greeks about Philip and the Macedonians:
"... not only no Greek, nor related to the Greeks, but not even a barbarian from any place that can be named with honors, but a pestilent knave from Macedonia, whence it was never yet possible to buy a decent slave" - Demosthenes, Third Philippic, 31. The famous words that this Greek orator from Athens used to describe the Macedonian king Philip II, and the Macedonians.
As for the Macedonians having a different language, I refer you to the Trial of Philotas in Curtius' - Histories of Alexander.
''One charge made against me is that I disdain to communicate in my native language, that I have no respect for the Macedonian customs (which means I have designs on an empire I despise!). That native language of ours has long been rendered obsolete through our dealings with other nations, and conquerors and conquered must learn a foreign tongue.'' - Curtius VI. 23.
These words by Philotas reveal -
      a) His native tongue was Macedonian
      b) Macedonians must learn the tongue of people they conquer
      c) Greek is referred to as a foreign language (Greeks were conquered by the Macedonians and forced into submission as we've seen from the battles they lost to Philip, Alexander and Antipater)
      d) He doesn't respect Macedonian customs; which if you read the ancient sources, are different to Greek ones
Similarly, a passage from Pausanias (Paus. IV, 29) describes a Macedonian attack on Messene in 214-213 B.C. ''The people of Messene thought it was the attack by the Spartans, but from their 'weapons and voice' understood them to be Macedonian.''
Cleitus' episode [Plutarch: The Age of Alexander]: ''But Alexander leaped to his feet and shouted in the Macedonian tongue for his bodyguard to turn out, a signal that this was an extreme emergency'' (p.309).
Plutarch-Greek Lives (p.360): ''called out in Macedonian for the Shieldbearers.''
Now, please provide your proofs from the primary sources (Arrian, Plutarch, Curtius Rufus, Diodorus and Justin) that Philip and Alexander spread the ancient Greek language and culture. Counter the proof that I've provided that there was a Macedonian language; don't use any modern day sources, use the ancient sources, people who lived in Alexander's time or those who wrote their histories from the primary sources that they took from.

Macedonia was at this time truly a force to be reckoned with, Phillip learned much from the likes of Epaminondas and Pammenes of Thebes. Phillip turned Macedon from a back water relatively weak and unimportant Greek Kingdom, to the mightiest power in the Hellenic, and known world. Astonishing.

One of my fave battles. I heard Alexander was only 17 here weeks before he turned 18. He had proved himself as a Regent at age 16 when Phillip II left for Byzantine. Sensing the weakness of a teen, some men staged a rebellion. Alexander organized a task force and squashed it, impressing his father and everyone by his leadership and courage and skill. They say he had a magnetic personality and could lead a team well.

In fact, the Athenians did manage to repel and push back the Macedonian right flank,it was not a King Philip's planned retreat. However the inexperienced Athenian commander in charge made a hasty decision and ordered his flank to pursue the Macedonian right flank, ignoring the warnings of his subordinates who advised maintaining their ground. This misstep was seized upon by Alexander, who capitalized on the opportunity to attack and flank the coalition army without his father's orders.
Realizing their mistake, the Athenians eventually fell back, but it was too late. However, they managed to retreat in an orderly manner. The casualties were relatively low for both sides because Philip, known as a military and political genius (some even claim he surpassed Alexander in this regard), aimed to win the sympathy of his fellow Greeks. He wanted them to support him against the Persian Empire, and he achieved this by demonstrating care for the fallen Athenian and Theban soldiers and releasing the prisoners.Amother reason is that It was always a bad and costly idea to attempt to completely destroy an army of hoplites once they had accepted defeat. Alexander failed to learn this lesson, and he paid the price in the future when he faced a Greek mercenary force fighting for the Persians. After their defeat, these mercenaries offered their services to Alexander, but he decided to eliminate them. In the subsequent battle, he lost more men than he had lost in his entire Asian expedition.

Alexander the Great visited the site of Ancient Troy in 334 B.C., as he embarked on his campaign against the Persian Empire, leading a unified Greek Army (Hellenic League).
The visit to Troy held both personal and strategic significance for Alexander. On one hand, it fulfilled his long-held desire to pay tribute to his hero Achilles and connect with the glorious past of Greek mythology.
On the other hand, the visit served as a powerful symbolic gesture that showcased his intention to unite the Greek world under his rule and carry on the legacy of the legendary heroes.
Upon reaching the Tomb of Achilles, Alexander took a moment to pay his respects and acknowledge the greatness of the legendary warrior.
Then, Alexander poured oil over the tomb, a customary practice in ancient Greek funerary rituals, symbolizing purification and sanctification.
He also placed garlands of flowers and foliage on the tomb, signifying honor and respect for the deceased.
Next, Alexander and Hephaestion sacrificed animals, likely horses, to honor the spirits of Achilles and Patroclus. This ritual was meant to appease the souls of the dead and seek their favor.
Finally, Alexander is believed to have organized athletic games at the site, following the ancient Greek tradition of hosting such competitions in memory of deceased heroes.
By paying homage to Achilles, Alexander was reinforcing his connection to the heroic past and legitimizing his claim to lead the Greek world.
After Troy and his first victory at the battle of the Granicus, while leading a unified Greek Army (Hellenic League) to avenge the Persian invasions in Greece 150 years prior, Alexander the Great sent 300 suits of full Persian armour (to honor the legendary last stand of the 300 Spartans in Thermopylae) to Athens, as a votive offering to Goddess Athena, to be hung on the Acropolis.
He ordered an inscription to be fixed over them; “Alexander, son of Philip and all the Greeks, present this offering from the spoils taken from the barbarians inhabiting Asia".
A statue group, known as the Granicus Monument, was erected by Alexander in the sanctuary of Zeus at Dion. This consisted of bronze statues by Lysippus, of Alexander with twenty-five of his companions who had died in the initial cavalry charge, all on horseback.
Alexander the Great is a sacred, immortal, legendary figure for us Greeks. Mostly for uniting all Greek City States and Kingdoms and spreading the unique Hellenic culture to the edges of the world. The rightful descendant of Achilles.

No amount of reason will shake modern Greek faith in the Hellenic ethnicity of the ancient Macedonians and their kings. It is more than a political prefer ence: many Greeks see it as a necessity, despite the inconclusive ancient evidence on the nationality of the Macedonians. But recent scholarship has begun to provide a response to old Greek arguments. There is an insufficient amount of evidence-the existence of Greek inscriptions in the kingdom of the Macedonians notwithstand ing-to know what the native language or dialect was. E.g., several dialects of Greek were used in ancient Macedonia, but what was the Macedonian dialect? The evidence of ancient writers suggests that Greek and Macedonian were mutually unintelligible languages in the court of Alexander the Great. Moreover, if contemporary or his torical opinion from antiquity means anything, the ancient world from the fourth century B.C. into the early Hellenistic period-roughly the age of Philip and Alexan der-believed that the Greeks and Macedonians were different peoples. None of which, incidentally, denies that the Macedonians, at least in their court and gentry, were quite highly hellenized, as recent archaeology has clearly shown. See E. Badian, "Greeks and Macedonians," Macedonia and Greece in Late Classical and Early Hellenis tic Times, Studies in the History of Art 10, ed. B. Barr-Sharrar and E. N. Borza (Wash ington, D.C., 1982). 33-51: Eugene N. Borza, In the Shadow of Olympus: The Emergence of Macedon, rev. ed. Great video. Alexander the Great was only 18 years old here and this was his very first ever battle. It's a testament to his brilliance how he was able to not only lead his men, but how he was able to spot the gap in the Athenian and Theban line ans how he knew to order his infantry on the Macedonian right to attack the Athenian and Theban left flank head on while he and the cavalry exploited the gap and attacked the Thebans from the rear. It was a brilliant move that won them the battle.

what do you mean by Great Video? The Macedonian Empire did not Conquer Greece. A city-state called Macedonia conquered the rest of the City States. The Roman Empire conquered Greece. The Ottoman Empire conquered Greece. When the Spartans attained Hegemony over Greece, we don't say the Spartan Empire conquered Greece.

@@ektorpolykandriotis635 To be accurate , it was not "a city state". It was a Greek/Hellenic kingdom, that united the rest of the Greeks , with the aim to attack Persia. The unification of course was violent. In Greece/Hellas, there were many different political statues at the time, there were city-states, there were kingdoms too (like the Macedonian kingdom [Μακεδονικό βασίλειο] and the kingdom of Ήπειρος , where Pyrros [Πύρρος] became a king some years later). The re were also Greeks in north Italy and the whole Sicily, usually in city states. Those Greeks were not part of the political unification that Philip and Alexander did, they had their own problems with Romans and Carthage , they did not care about Persia.

The Macedonians were anxious to assert their Greekness (the Athenian orator Demosthenes called them barbarians), but their own language (apparently unintelligible to other Greeks) lacked the cultural prestige to match their imperial ambitions.

During soccer matches Athenians today will call Thessalonikeans "Bulgarians". It is a derogatory term. Thessalonikeans call Athenians of Olympiacos "smelt" or "gavros" which is a tiny fish. In your genius analysis that is proof that people who live in Athens are actually fish. The Macedonians participated in the Olympics. Only Greeks could do that. There are infinite other references (Alexander's answer to Darius for example) that prove beyond doubt that Macedonians were and are as Greeks as anyone can be.

you are just laughable with how uneducated you are. many ancient Greeks when they disliked each other insulted each other by calling the barbarian, unwashed, uncivilized and others. if they wanted to say that the Macedonians were not Greek they would have called them foreigners not barbarians. Macedonians are Greek with Doric roots. I challenge you to find me an ancient source that says and proves that the ancient Macedonians were not Greek, otherwise you are uneducated and a fraud.

Let's make something clear for once and FOREVER wasnt Macedonia vs Greece here was Macedonian s vs Athens and Thebes ,A Macedonian s first Ruler was Makednos from Bloodline of Hellen son of Deucalionas king of Thessaly they spoke Greek similar to Doric Dialecte and have absolutely the same Gods with rest of Greek in their Southern border with Thessaly located the Olympus mountain the sacred mountain of all Greek s and the point Greek Mythology begin s ( Olympians vs Titans) much Later from Makednos came to Macedonia Nobles Refugees from Argos of Pelloponese became Later kings The Argean Dynasty Alexander The Grate was deshendant by them , one Alexander Ansestor took part in the Olympic games in who only Greek s can participate, B Thebans was the only Greek city wad Always in good relationship with Persia thats why Alexander destroy Thebes ,C In Athens was a Political party anti Macedonian under Demosthenes,And a Political party Under Issocratis who support Union of Greece under Philip the time of the conflict of Cheronea the anti Macedonia n party was in Power,D Alexander was under guidance of Delfi oracle to unite Greece against Persians ,Thats why The campaign was Panhellenic and his title was " chief General of the Greek s" when you say Macedonian vs Greeks is like you say Celts vs Irish

Macedonians had a great deal of Greek origin but due to their willingness to intermingle with " barbarian " cultures everyone agrees that they barely even were to be considered Greeks and were often looked down on by the other city states... granted they were often apart of Greek politics but they were so different from their brothers down south that it's easier to just refer to them as their own thing...after all they didn't refer to themselves as the new Persian empire, or the Greek empire ,they called themselves the Macedonian empire... like how the Romans were called Romans not Italians or Latins.
