The English Channel is notoriously turbulent and crossing it with an invasion force, especially at that time, is a challenge. The thing that always amazes me is the portable engineering expertise of the Roman army. When any Roman force arrives, they build large (often impregnable) fortifications to serve as military bases. When their ships were destroyed in the Channel, they simply built new ones on site. If they come across an enormous river, they build a substantial bridge to cross it.

The landing place shown here is definitely not the place they landed. See John Manley's book AD 43. Chichester was the place they landed, natural harbour, and friendly tribe. That's why the Roman palace was built as a thank you for allowing the landing for the king of the local tribe. Makes complete military sense. Why fight your way in when you can land in peace, set up and establish supply lines, then when ready, move out. And they could have fallen back to the isle of white, Vectis.
